Raeliana’s POV

I stared at him in shock but he remained unmoving.

Elias Lockhart was actually offering me a deal that sounded like something out of a trashy novel.

"Are you... are you actually serious right now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Dead serious," Elias said, leaning forward and grinning. "You want revenge on Annalise, don't you? She just humiliated you in front of the entire school, and she’s single-handedly trying to run you out of Pembroke.”

He shrugged and continued speaking. “You fake-date me, and we both get what we want.”

My brain was running in a hundred different directions at once. He was right about one thing… I wanted Annalise to pay.

I wanted her to feel a fraction of the agony she had put me through.

"Think about it, Roosevelt," Elias pressed, reaching out to tap my shoulder. "You won’t get a deal like this again.”

I looked at him, taking in his messy sandy blonde hair and the arrogant set of his jaw… not to mention those full cupid-bow shaped lips.

This man was the epitome of a troublemaker. Getting involved with him in any way wouldn’t do me good

"No," I said, stepping away from him.

Elias blinked, his confident expression faltering for a fraction of a second. "What?"

"I said no," I repeated, crossing my arms over my chest. "I'm turning it down."

"Are you insane?" He straightened up, throwing his hands out in disbelief. "This is literally the best deal you’re ever going to get. Half the school is passing around a video of you covered in raw eggs, and you're turning down the only lifeline you’ve got?"

I rolled my eyes and stepped closer to him. “It’s because it’s terrible idea!" I snapped, my anger flaring right back up.

"First of all, fake dating is pathetic. Second of all, we will both be gathering unnecessary attraction. And most importantly of all?" I leaned in, meeting his gaze head-on. "You are completely not my type."

Elias’s jaw dropped slightly. Of all the things I could have said, that clearly hit him the hardest.

His blue eyes flashed with anger. "I'm not your type?" he echoed, pointing a finger at his own chest. "Are you blind? Half the girls on this campus would kill to stand where you're standing right now.”

"Then go ask one of them!" I retorted, rolling my eyes. "Because I like guys who are actually decent human beings, not arrogant hockey meatheads who insult my body the second they meet me.”

"Oh, like you're a walk in the park!" Elias scoffed, taking a step toward me. "You’re violent, you have a terrible temper, and you nearly tore my hair out by the roots yesterday. You’re definitely not my type either, sweetheart.”

"Good. Then we agree!" I barked. "The deal is off."

"I'm giving you time to think about it," he said, adjusting his collar and trying to regain his cool demeanor, though a flush of red was creeping up his neck. "You're stressed out right now. Take the night off and call me when you realize you need me."

"My decision is final, Lockhart," I said flatly, pointing toward the door. "Get out."

Elias smirked, though it looked forced this time.

He took a step backward toward the exit, resting his hand on the doorknob. "It's not final, Roosevelt. You'll change your mind by tomorrow morning. See you around, fake girlfriend."

"In your dreams.” I yelled as he slipped out the door, letting it click shut behind him.

The second the latch caught, the adrenaline left my body all at once. My knees buckled, and I crumpled straight down to the cold floor.

I buried my face in my hands, my heart hammering against my ribs like a war drum.

My mind was racing so fast I couldn't breathe. I felt trapped, and utterly alone in this large

city.

With shaking fingers, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed the one number that mattered.

It rang three times before a loud, breathless voice burst through the speaker.

"Raeliana? Oh my gosh, are you okay?” She rambled, “why did you hang up like that?”

Hearing Betty's voice felt like dropping a hundred pound weight off my shoulders. Tears stung the corners of my eyes, but I forced them back. "Betty... I'm in trouble."

She paused for a moment then asked. "What happened?”

"I don't know what to do anymore," I whimpered, pulling my knees up to my chest. "Elias Lockhart is Annalise’s ex-boyfriend."

"Wait, the guy you punched?" Betty interrupted, sounding derailed. "The one you told me about before?"

I nodded even though she couldn’t see me.

"He offered me a deal ten minutes ago," I explained, squeezing my eyes shut. "He wants us to pretend to date and said would get Annalise off his back and stop the bullying for me."

There was a long beat of silence on the line.

"Raeliana," Betty said, her tone suddenly dropping into seriousness. "Tell me you said yes."

Raeliana’s POV"Can I help you?"I turned to see a girl stepping out from the small office near the entrance. She had brown hair pulled back into a tight bun with dark glasses resting on the bridge of her nose, and a black clipboard tucked under her arm. She was wearing a fitted Pembroke Athletics jacket."Hi," I said, putting on my most polite smile as I stepped toward her. "I'm looking for the figure skating team supervisor. I saw on the brochure that walk-in tryouts for the varsity roster are open today."The girl didn't smile back. She adjusted her glasses, her eyes scanning me from my ponytail down to my sneakers. Her gaze lingered a second too long, her expression was unreadable."Our supervisor is out on medical leave for the next three weeks," she said flatly. "I’m Vicky. I’m the team president, so I’m handling the decisions until she gets back.""Oh, got it," I said, nodding quickly. "Well, nice to meet you, Vicky. Betty screamed through the speaker so loudly I had to pull the phone away from my ear. "Raeliana Roosevelt, take the right now.”I groaned, dragging a hand down my face. "Betty, no. I am not fake dating an arrogant jerk just to get back at a bully.”"It's not just getting back at her, Rae, it's survival." Betty pleaded, her voice ringing with worry. "You don't have anyone in your corner at that snob academy. If this guy can shield you from Annalise and give you breathing room, you take it! Who cares if he's an idiot? Use him.”"I can't!" I snapped back, my jaw tightening. "Elias is absolute trouble, Betty. He's mean, manipulative, and I don't trust him for a second.”I walked over to my bed and plopped on it with a sigh. “If I accept his stupid deal, I'm just letting him control me, too. I spent th

Betty begged from the speaker."I can't calm down, Betty. You have no idea what it was like," I gasped out, wiping another tear from my cheek. "She poured raw egg all over me in front of the entire hallway! And seeing Elias standing there, just watching me... it made everything ten times worse, and I don't even know why!"Betty let out a slew of curses. “Where are you going to go then?”"Let me come back to Texas and live with your family.” I begged. “I'll get a job and I'll do whatever it takes… just let me stay with you guys!"Betty let out a laugh. "Rae, honey, you know I love you, but my house has three bedrooms and I have six siblings,” she snorted again, “we literally have people sleeping on the couch already.” I sank down on

Raeliana’s POVMy hand was trembling so violently that the phone almost slipped from my fingers. The dark walls of the library seemed to press inward, suffocating me as the air rushed out of my lungs. My vision blurred around the edges, tuning out everything until all I could see was that name glowing on the screen.Annalise? Before I could process the thumping of my heart, Elias ripped the phone out of my grip."What the hell is wrong with you?" he swore as he tucked the buzzing phone back into his jacket pocket. “You’re really crazy, you know?”He turned on his heel, heading toward the library door, but the sudden rush of panic in my veins snapped me out of my trance. I lunged forward and grabbed his sleeve. "Wait!" I choked out, my voice cracking. "How… How do you know Annalise?Elias glared down at my hand on his arm, his jaw clenching in annoyance. Raeliana’s POVMy mind went completely blank. I was frozen in the doorway, staring at the boy on our porch. He had a beige bandage taped tightly across the bridge of his nose, and a faint purplish-blue bruise was already blooming over his left cheekbone.Elias was frozen, too. His icy blue eyes widened in shock the second he recognized me. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. Then, I noticed the couple standing right behind him. A good looking man in a grey suit and a woman wearing a diamond necklace. Judging from the stark resemblance, I knew instantly they were his parents. Before Elias could say a word, my brain slammed into survival mode. I smoothed down the front of my dress and forced my lips into a polite smile."Good evening! Welcome," I said smoothly, stepping back to open the door wider. "Please, come right in."My father strode into the foyer a second later, his face lighting up with a massive grin. "Arthur! Victoria! You made it!"They walked inside and the
