Chapter 5

Author: Bagel
"Are you really sure about going to that Arca conservation project?"

Oliver's voice was full of concern.

I sat silently across his massive desk and gave a small nod.

After leaving the school that night, I locked myself in my room for two days.

I didn't go to school, and I barely ate anything.

Oliver wiped a hand down his face and leaned back heavily against his leather chair.

"The Arca savanna is a long way from here," he said quietly. "If you really intend to do this, you have to withdraw from school tonight, before we submit the application."

"Whatever you want to take with you, go get it."

I forced a faint smile.

"There is nothing left that I want to take with me, Oliver."

On the night before submitting the application, I went alone to my private practice room.

It was built specifically for me. Brooks didn't want me to share the crowded school gym. He had his dad pay to build it just for me.

"The school's practice facilities are always packed. Every time Ivy practices there, the guys on the sports teams stare at her. It makes me want to punch them."

At the time, his face was full of jealousy.

But now, I went into the storage room and packed every single thing the three of them had ever given me into a box.

Meanwhile, the news that I had gone to see my brother had already spread through the school before the bell rang.

Consequently, they came knocking on my door, aggressive and furious.

Carter was the first to shove open the door, his face red with rage.

"Ivy! What did you tell your brother this time?"

Harrison followed closely behind.

His gaze swept quickly across the room; he saw the duffel bag at my feet, the emptied locker, and the box full of gifts.

Brooks was the last to walk in. Without a word, he stood quietly by the doorframe, staring at me with unreadable eyes.

If this had been a month ago, and they had come barging in to accuse me like this, I would have felt incredibly hurt.

I would have cried and called Oliver to stand up for me. I would have demanded that they apologize immediately.

But today, I only felt entirely exhausted and completely numb.

I offered no explanation and pushed the box under the lockers.

These gifts were all incredibly expensive, but I didn't plan to take any of them with me.

"Say something!" Carter urged. "Without your brother backing you up, what can you even do? If you use your brother's influence to rig the vote for the next cheer captain, I swear I will..."

"You will what?" I finally looked up. "Strangle me?"

The practice room went deathly silent. Carter froze.

Harrison immediately frowned. He took a step forward, his tone softer.

"Ivy, don't be like this. Stop acting out. Just tell us exactly what you made Oliver do, okay?"

My gaze swept over the three of them.

"Then answer one question for me first. Who did you vote for as the next cheer captain? "

I paused.

"Me, or her?"

The moment the words left my mouth, all three of them avoided my gaze.

Then, I smiled.

"That's right. You guessed it. I was trying to rig the cheer captain election."

"I even wanted to force Nova to get the hell out of this school."

All three of them instantly froze.

I clutched my sleeves tightly.

"I was jealous of her. I hated her because she took all of you away from me."

"So I begged my brother to use his influence as the school's biggest donor to make sure she lost. She couldn't use the cheer captain title to prove herself to her family."

"Now, are you satisfied?"

I tried desperately to keep my tears from falling and kept my voice as calm as possible.

"Ivy..." Harrison started to speak.

I cut him off.

"As long as Nova is at this school, I will make sure no one has a moment of peace."

Carter's face instantly darkened.

"Don't you dare!"

"Just watch me."

A lump rose in my throat.

"Oliver always gives me everything I ask for, remember?" I laughed softly. "He has been like that since we were little. All I have to do is cry a little."

Brooks finally spoke up.

"Oliver would never destroy an honor student's future just because of your jealousy."

I stared at him for a long time.

Then, I abruptly yanked the box out from under the locker and smashed it onto the floor.

The gifts shattered everywhere.

They were stunned.

My chest hurt terribly, as if it would split open at any second.

"Don't worry. Tomorrow morning, you'll find out everything anyway."

Seeing that I refused to say another word, the three of them finally slammed the door and left.

I stood perfectly still until the sound of their footsteps in the hallway completely disappeared.

Then, I picked up my bag.

Oliver was already waiting by his car in the school parking lot.

When he saw me walk out, his eyes instantly grew red.

Without a word, he opened the car door for me. The backseat was already stocked with all the medical supplies, vaccines, and survival gear needed for Arca.

"Meds. Bug spray. Sunscreen. Clothes." His voice was hoarse. "Arca is rough. You have to take care of yourself."

I nodded and got into the passenger seat.

I turned my head for one last look, watching the school bathe in the dim lights.

The football field, the student council room, and that cheer practice room I would never set foot in again.

The car door slowly closed.

I smiled at my brother, whose eyes were still red.

"Don't worry, Oliver. I will."

When I said that, their faces crumbled.Harrison looked like he couldn't believe his ears. He lunged forward, reaching out a hand to grab my dress."Ivy... don't be like this..."I took a step back and dodged his hand."Stop acting." I dropped my smile.Harrison's hand hung stiffly in midair, the color draining completely from his face.Carter's lips trembled. "Ivy, we're not acting...""That delicate girl who constantly stressed over whether you texted back, whose whole world revolved around you, is long dead.""She died on that rainy night when you threw hot coffee on her. She died on the floor where you shoved her away for Nova, leaving her back to peel."Carter clutched his chest like he had been stabbed.Brooks clenched his jaw, tears falling silently. The pride he used to flaunt had vanished completely.I looked at them, with no hatred in my eyes. When you don't love someone, you can't hate them either. There was nothing left but absolute indifference."For the past three hundred

My complete indifference shattered their defenses.I didn't look at them for another second. After nodding politely to the French investor, I turned around, lifted the hem of my velvet gown, and walked calmly toward the terrace outside. The night wind was cool, blowing away the heavy perfume and the fake small talk of the hall.Leaning against the railing, I pulled my phone out of my clutch. The screen lit up; my academic advisor at Callinger had just sent an email. It was the final confirmation for our new conservation project in Kenya. With my head down, I typed out a reply.Right now, these things were my comfort zone.Suddenly, the sound of frantic footsteps echoed behind me. Dress shoes clicked against the floor, stumbling like they were drunk."Ivy!"The voice was one I used to know so well. The three guys pushed through the crowd and stumbled onto the terrace.I didn't stop typing. I just looked up over my screen.Standing before me were three men I barely recognized.Carter's e

The night of the alumni gala arrived. The ultra-luxurious downtown hotel was decorated beautifully. However, the darkest corner of the grand hall felt like a dead zone.Brooks, Carter, and Harrison were dressed in expensive tuxedos, but they looked terrible. These once popular boys had all lost weight. Their eyes were dark and hollow, completely drained of life."Harrison?" A pretty junior in an expensive gown walked over, blushing as she offered him a glass of champagne. "Um, for the first dance later, could I..."Harrison shook his head blankly. The girl jumped and quickly scurried away.Carter leaned against a marble column, holding a glass of whiskey. He tipped his head back and downed it in one gulp. The burn scorched his throat, but it couldn't numb the despair in his chest."She's not coming back." Carter's eyes were bloodshot. "Today is the last day of the one-year mark. She didn't show up."Brooks lowered his eyes, staring out at the hall."She got a full ride to Callinger Uni

When winter arrived, Belmont Academy grew colder and colder. The usually bustling school cafeteria was dead quiet.Nova stood shivering in the middle of the room, her face pale. She was wearing a green and gold cheerleading uniform. She thought that if she wore this outfit, she could make those three boys nostalgic. However, the response she got was the sound of a table crashing to the floor.Carter kicked over the lunch table in front of him, sending plates and food flying everywhere. His eyes were bloodshot. He glared at Nova, advancing step by step."Who gave you the nerve to touch her things?" Carter's roar rattled the cafeteria windows.Nova stumbled backward in terror, tears spilling from her eyes. "I... I just wanted to join the cheer squad.""The coach said I had the right figure and let me try on this old uniform...""The right figure?" Carter closed the distance. "Do you really think you deserve to wear that?"Carter's voice cut through the dead silence."Take it off. Now."N

Two whole months passed.Without Ivy and Oliver's thirty million dollars, the lives of these three boys completely devolved into a mess.Carter lost the massive field budget for the baseball team, and even their daily practices were restricted. His uncontrollable temper became increasingly hard to manage. He was a ticking time bomb on the field.Brooks wandered around like a ghost all day, sitting outside that cheer practice room door that had been permanently boarded up, ignoring everyone. But the most direct impact was on the Student Council. With the funding gone, the heating in the student council room was broken. It was freezing."Dammit, this place is like an icebox!"Nova slammed the files in her hand onto the desk in frustration. She was wearing a thick cashmere coat, but she still rubbed her arms, marching toward Harrison, who sat behind the desk."Harrison, can you do something about this damn heat? I'm freezing to death!"Harrison sat in his chair, his eyes bloodshot from st

The plane broke through the clouds, leaving the city far behind.I leaned against the window, watching the buildings grow smaller and smaller below. Calmly, I popped the SIM card out of my phone, snapped it in half, and tossed it into the trash bag.I left cleanly, leaving absolutely nothing behind at Belmont Academy.Early the next morning, a strange tension hung over the school hallways.Brooks, Carter, and Harrison were braced for a fight. The three of them hadn't slept at all. They were waiting by the front office before the sun came up.Carter clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. He kicked the trash can next to him. "Even if Oliver buys the whole school, I won't let Nova lose!"For once, Harrison didn't try to stop Carter's outburst. His brows were tightly knitted. He yanked at his tie. That usually calm face of his looked tense today. "Oliver is notoriously overprotective of her. With the way Ivy was acting last night, she's absolutely capable of forcing her brother t
