Isaure had almost managed to forget the storage room.

Almost.

Unfortunately, every time she remembered the gathering, she remembered the cockroach. Then she remembered the way she had ended up in Caspian Beaumont’s arms, holding onto him as if the entire building depended on it.

She pushed the memory aside and concentrated on the notes in front of her.

“You’re going to tear that paper.”

Isaure loosened her grip.

Séverine sat across from her in the common room, watching with open amusement.

  • Long Live My Enemy   Chapter 49 The Last Morning

By the sixth morning, the house had begun to feel inconveniently familiar.Julian had stopped checking the kitchen cupboards before making tea. Rafe knew which floorboard complained outside his bedroom, and Séverine had developed the habit of leaving her book on the little table beside the sitting-room window. Even Adrian, who had spent the first two days complaining about the lack of decent entertainment, had found a comfortable spot on the sofa and defended it whenever anyone tried to sit there.Isaure had noticed these things without meaning to.She had also noticed that she no longer reached for her phone every few minutes to check the time. That was probably the strangest part. At home, there was always somewhere she was expected to be, someone waiting for an answer, something she had forgotten to do. Here, the hours had passed without asking much of her.She wasn't sure she liked that.Across the breakfast table, Adrian was attempting to convince Julian that the house's toast ha

The receipt book remained open on the dining table long after Julian had finished copying the entry. By late afternoon, the others had scattered around the house, each pretending to have found something more interesting to do.Isaure was in the study, trying to make sense of the small mark beside the transfer number. She had copied it onto a loose sheet and drawn it three times. None of the versions looked any more familiar.“You're going to wear a hole through that paper.”Caspian stood in the doorway. She kept her pencil moving.“I'm trying to work out whether it's a letter or a symbol.”“And staring at it angrily helps?”“It helps me not throw it at someone.”He came closer and looked over her shoulder. “You have made it too neat. The original was smudged.”“Thank you. I hadn't noticed.”He picked up the receipt book and turned it towards the window. “There. The mark is pressed into the page. It might have been written on the sheet above it.”Isaure looked again. The impression was

  • Long Live My Enemy   Chapter 47 The Space Between Entries

By the fifth morning, the country house had begun to feel less like somewhere they had been sent and more like somewhere they had learned to occupy. Rafe had claimed the chair nearest the window, Séverine had stopped asking whether anyone wanted tea before pouring it, and Adrian had developed the habit of appearing halfway through a conversation with a plate in his hand. That morning, Julian arrived with the inventory index tucked beneath his arm.“I checked the reference again,” he said, setting it on the table. “The entry isn't a repair record. It points to a transfer number. We should look for the corresponding receipt.”“You think?” Adrian asked.“Where would a receipt be kept?” Caspian asked.“Accounts room, if the records were kept together. Or wherever they stored outgoing correspondence.” Julian tapped the number. “The index doesn't say.”Isaure reached for the page. “Then we check both.”Caspian looked at her. “You have a plan?”“I have a suggestion. You can tell the differen

  • Long Live My Enemy   Chapter 46 The Record of What Was Moved

By the fifth morning, the country house had acquired a routine. Breakfast no longer required everyone to arrive at once, and nobody asked where the cups were kept. The arguments over the bathroom had quietened, though Adrian still maintained that the hot water was being rationed deliberately. The two days between their last discovery and this morning had passed without anything remarkable. They had searched the rooms they were allowed to enter, compared their notes, and found no reason to believe the house was ready to give up its secrets.Séverine was pouring tea when Rafe came into the dining room. He glanced at the pot, then at her.“Is there enough for another cup?”“I think so.”“You think so?”“I haven't counted the cups, Rafe.”He took the pot from her before she could lift it again. “I'll risk it.”Séverine watched him pour. “You could have asked me to do it.”“I could have. But you were already doing it.”It was an ordinary answer, and that was what made her smile. He set the

  • Long Live My Enemy   Chapter 45 Don't Start With Me

Leah was trying to open a jar of strawberry jam when Adrian walked into the sitting room. She had already tried twice. The lid refused to move, and she was beginning to suspect that somebody had closed it with a personal grudge.Adrian stopped beside the table.“Need help?”“No.”He watched her try again.“Okay.”Leah looked at him. “You could at least pretend you didn't see that.”“I offered help. You rejected it. I'm respecting your wishes.”“Please, just open it.”Adrian took the jar from her, twisted the lid, and handed it back.Leah stared at it.“Thank you.”“Anytime.”She spread the jam on her toast while Adrian sat across from her and reached for the bowl of fruit. For a few minutes, they ate without talking. Someone upstairs moved a chair across the floor, and a door slammed somewhere down the corridor.“Have you spoken to Casp

  • Long Live My Enemy   Chapter 44 The Details That Didn't Fit

Julian woke before the others because he had gone to bed thinking about the dates. He stayed under the covers, arranging the information in his head. The old property plan showed a room that did not appear on the later copy. The records he had found suggested the building had been altered, but none of them clearly explained when or why. He had written the dates down twice. They still refused to make sense. He opened the folder of photographs he had taken of the records. The first plan was labelled with a date from decades earlier. The second was marked as a revised copy, but the handwriting in the corner looked older than the label suggested. He had noticed that before. Yesterday, the others had been discussing their reasons for coming, and he had not wanted to interrupt with a detail he could not yet explain. Now he enlarged the image until the handwriting became difficult to read. The date on the corner was not the date he had first thought it
