Breakup

Early morning in Lara’s apartment. She decided to break up with Nathaniel.  To Lara it seems to be the best choice.  She wanted to be in a loving, trusting, comfortable relationship, but this. This thing between her and Nathaniel isn’t what she thought a relationship should be. “I don’t see us progressing into a real relationship.  We haven’t even gone on a real date the whole year we supposedly been dating,” Lara said to Nathaniel.  “Why do we have to be more than what we are.  Don’t we have a good thing going on between us” Nathaniel said.  Lara was dumbfounded.  She thought to herself, is this the type of relationship he longs for, because it sure isn’t something that I want.  “I want to have a boyfriend, who wants to be with me, who I am comfortable with, and he is comfortable with me. I want to be able to go out in public to enjoy each other and hold hands.  You know, like what people in relationships do,” Lara said in an exasperated voice.  Her emotions are bordering sad and furious.  “But we don’t need to be like everyone else.  We can just stay home.  Together.  Isn’t that enough,” Nathaniel said, but not really getting it.  Lara was at a loss for words.  After a few heartbeats she said, “Seriously! You make plans with your friends, who, by the way, are not only guys but also women too. Why am I not good enough to make plans and go out too?  Where do I rank on the list of important people in your life” Lara argued.  Her voice wasn’t loud, but stern.  She stood there with her eyes shooting daggers into his eyes.  “They are just friends” he said to her.  Before I could stop myself, words came falling out of my mouth, “that’s my point.  They get all of you, while I only get the one that wants to stay at home.  I am not even on your list of important people in your life.  They know more about you than I do, and when I say that I mean that you actually talk with them.  I want that. That is why we are done.”  I couldn’t help myself.  “Just like that” he responded incredulously.  “It’s been a year, when have we ever gone out together” she asked as she folded her arms across her chest.  “When we first met” he finally said after thinking it over.  Was he kidding, she thought.  “We weren’t dating then,” she replied, lifting her hands in the air making air quotes when saying dating.

Six months after the break-up

The tears kept falling down my eyes from the sadness my heart is feeling.  I have never felt heartbreak before but today my heart has learned what that word, heartbreak, means.  It’s been 24 hours since the tears started to fall.  My body is numb.  My thoughts are filled with despair.  My face has lost its glow.  I’ve been laying on my bed, snuggled under the covers since I found out the news.  “It only took him 6 months to marry another woman. Why couldn’t it have been with me” I said through my sobs.  I left Nathaniel because he wasn’t ready to marry.  I’ve been with him for 1 year and all he gave me was a promise ring.  At that time, I made it clear that I didn’t want to be a live-in girlfriend.  I wanted more or at least talk about the relationship.  If we both didn’t see the relationship going anywhere, then I wouldn’t have invested my emotions, my body, or my heart into him.  Guess what, we never had that talk, so I made the choice to leave him.  “This isn’t a bad thing for you.  Maybe he wasn’t the one for you, and this is the universe’s way of letting you know” Misty said.  I looked at her with my teary eyes.  I’m hearing her and hate every word that just came out of her mouth.  My thoughts were racing because the man I gave my everything to didn’t fight for me to stay with him.  But what did he do, he started dating other women.  Then he finds and marries someone new, within six months of me leaving him. Me and Misty looked at the photo of Nathaniel and his new wife.  “She’s not even pretty” I wailed out loud.  I’m not saying that I’m pretty, but it would be great if he married prettier than me.  I looked at my left ring finger and stared at the 14 karat yellow gold band with a 1 karat pear shaped diamond ring.  This is exactly the ring I wanted AS AN ENGAGEMENT .  I only said this once in passing to Eliza and never said it again.  Apparently, he overheard me saying that and remembered it.  Now, when I look at the ring all I see is my pain reflected back to me from the beautiful glimmer on the diamond’s face.  My thoughts are all garbled with mourning and loss.  Heartbreak is not fun, but I never thought I would break down like this. My feelings were deeper than even I knew.  And here I was making fun of women who broke down like this.  Well, it shows how much life experience I had, to be so ignorant.  Another week passed from the news.  “Lara, are you sick? You are so skinny” Misty said.  Well, I haven’t eaten much because I haven’t had an appetite.  After a month my clothes were all hanging off of me so bad, Misty really got concerned.  “Hey, want to grab a bite” Misty said when she called me.  I agreed to meet her but even then, I didn’t eat much.  “Lara, I’m really worried about you.  You are a size zero.  Not that you don’t look good, but it’s unhealthy how you are losing the weight.  How can you get out of this phase” Misty asked with worry on her face.  Those were my thoughts too, but I didn’t know how to get myself out of this slump either.  “Don’t worry, I’ll go back to work” I replied.  “That’s a great idea.  Go work and get your mind off of him” she said cheerfully.  And that was the boost I needed to move on, however, my heart will never be the same.

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 46 Anxiety Number 2

Crown After Orion left, we walked back into the bedroom and sat on the loveseat. “Lara, please tell me the whole truth. I know something is bothering you and it’s not just me and Orion,” I told her. I let her take her time answering. It’s not easy to open up to someone. You may be comfortable and trust a person, but that comfort and trust has boundaries. It took her a while to respond. “When I was young, I used to have these dreams. Recurring vivid dreams. Kind of like a memory, but not my memory, because I was young. I was fighting or trying to fight,” she said as she was gesturing with her arms. “Scared. I was scared. I was thrown into a cave. A man or older boy was laughing, he said stay here I’ll come back. He never did. I heard other people there also laughing but I couldn’t see them. I think I was in the cave for 2 days because there was darkness then light, then darkness then light again,” she said. I can see the toll it’s taking on her, but it still doesn

Lara “Crown, that smells so good,” I said as I dramatically inhaled the scents coming from the pot and pan on the stove. “You do know I already ate breakfast,” I said with a smile on my face. “I do. This is for later,” Crown responded as he pointed to the food he was cooking. “You know, I just might have to correct myself with my co-workers and say I am dating both of you,” I said with a laugh and sat at the table with Orion. Before I walked into the kitchen I felt tension in the air, but I didn’t understand it. After my comment, it didn’t escape me that both Crown and Orion stiffened. “What do you mean,” Orion scowled at me. “Well, just that one time both of you dropped me off and picked me up from work. They made a few observations to me,” I said nonchalantly. “What kind of observations,” Crown asked. “You guys, why so serious? My single co-workers are excited because you two are so goodlooking. My married co-workers are living vicariously through me because you two

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 44: Breakfast

Lara The days flew by, and I’m not sure why. It could be that Orion and I are becoming closer to each other. We’ve been alternating where we spent our time. The days I stayed at his house Crown would come over. Sometimes he’d come over when I was at my house, but that wasn’t often. This morning Shan and I just got off of our shift and while walking to the parking garage we heard, “hey, let’s do breakfast.” We turned around towards the voice. It was Dr. Cameron. “Hey doc,” we said in unison. “I’m down if you are,” Shan said. “Ok,” I said as I took out my phone and group text Orion and Crown. Text: LARA: I’m going to breakfast with Shan and Doc Cameron. I’ll be home after. “Pancake House or somewhere else,” Doc said. “Pancake House,” Shan said. “Pancake House,” I said. “Pancake House,” Nelly said walking up to us. “Me too,” Dani said. “Perfect. Let’s go,” Doc said. After that everyone went to their own cars to meet at the Pancake House. Shan and I were parked ri

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 43: Face To Face

Mr. Green When I sat down at a table, the woman that was sitting alone looked up. Surprise on her face. Not obvious, but it was there. “We meet again,” I said in a monotoned hushed voice. The only response was her lips pressing into a thin line. “Why do you keep following me,” I asked, looking into her eyes. She stayed silent. I also stayed silent. We sat at this table staring at each other saying nothing. “Sir,” a server said hesitantly. “Yes,” I answered her but kept my eyes on the woman across from me. “Is there something we can help you with, sir,” the server said again. “No,” I answered again. “But sir, this is not suitable for you,” the server sounded a little distressed. “This is fine,” I said impatiently. “But,” the waitress tried again. “Leave,” I commanded. The server jumped a little. “Yes, sir,” she said softly walking away. The woman across from me shifted her eyes to the server walking away. The lips that were pressed into a thin line became even

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 42: Bruise Easy

Lara Sound drifted into my ears and my mind slowly started to wake up. “Hey. You're up,” a voice said. I opened my eyes and saw Orion lying next to me on his bed, in his bedroom. My eyes took in my surroundings. I can't believe I slept here, I thought. “Hey,” I whispered groggily, mentally shaking off sleep. Orion enveloped me into his arms, and I snuggled closer to him. “How was your day,” I asked him. “It was ok. I worked on my car and my new hire isn't bad,” he responded. “Oh yeah,” I said absently breathing in his scent. He smiled at me. “Marcus is shadowing her. According to him, she’s pretty good,” he said. “Ohh, a woman,” I said with a smile. “Yeah, she's better than some of the guys I hired before,” he stated with a chuckle. “Yes! Girl power,” I said while putting my fist in the air but keeping my eyes closed. Orion laughed at that. “That's great, having a bunch of women working on cars might bring in more customers,” I said with a smile. He laughe

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 41: Women vs Men

Orion The parts I needed to fix my car came in. It’s a good thing I own a shop. The shop doesn’t specialize in body work, it’s just something I learned, filed in the just-in-case pile of things I know but don’t know when I’ll ever use it category in the back of my mind. It wasn’t a difficult job, but it kept me busy. “Hey boss, you need help,” Marcus said as he walked up to me. “What is there no work,” I said lightly. As if I didn’t know the flow of work each day. “Haha, there is but since we got a new hire, I’m just overseeing how it goes,” Marcus responded. “Ah, gotcha. How’s it going,” I asked. “Can actually change a tire,” Marcus started to say, but another voice interrupted, “everybody should know how to change a tire.” We looked towards the voice and we both said, “true story.” Marcus then asked, “you need something.” “Well, I’m finished with the oil change. You want to check my work,” the new hire said. Bethany Carlson was the new hire. When I interviewed he

Crown When I left Orion and Lara, I drove straight to my house. Before I could twist the knob, the door flew open. “Dude, did you get laid last night,” was the question that came flying my way from a voice that needed to mind his own business. However, said voice, didn’t stop there but follo

Lara “I’m so glad this night is over,” Dani said from behind me. Dani, Maria, Shan, Nelly, and I were in the elevator itching to leave this place. Our shift is over, and we want to get out of here. Tonight, was weird like there was a full moon. I mean, it’s like all the crazies came out toni

  • Losing the Lonely   Trust or Ignorance

Mr. Green When I arrived at the restaurant, I walked directly to the private room where Taryn was waiting. The hostess saw me approaching and went to open the door for me. “Would you like to order anything,” she said as I entered the room. “No,” I replied. There are 3 main hostess that work

  • Losing the Lonely   Inquiring Minds

Mr. Green “Sir, the information I found seems normal. Nothing threatening or weird,” Taryn reported. I have a private office here in the hospital. It has never been used until now. “Hmm. What do you think of this report,” I asked Taryn. “They know how to keep clean. No incidents at all,” he
