Natalie’s POV

My heels clicked strongly against marble like gunfire. Hair slicked into a tight bun. Back straight, head high. I walked through the doors of Gravestone Group like I owned it even if my heart was pounding like heavily underneath the surface.

Fake it. Sell the illusion until it becomes real.

A sharp flash of sunlight bounced off a windshield, forcing me to squint. My eyes tracked the sleek black Mercedes exiting the lot.

Was that…?

“Malcolm?” I muttered.

I shook off the suspicion scolding myself that not every black car was tied to a black card with the name Onyx on it.

Twenty minutes later, I was locking eyes with the head of HR, shaking hands with practiced calm. Gravestone Group wasn’t just a level above Caldwell. it was an entirely different galaxy. And I? I wasn’t here to beg for a place. I was here to take it.

If Vanessa could see this…

A smirk curled my lips. Let her choke on it.

We stopped outside a glass-walled boardroom. HR knocked, and the conversation

NATALIEThe weekend brought with it a much needed relief from the office and it's pressures. I was getting tired of hearing about the competition at every turn.I was at home, with sketches and notes scattered everywhere, my laptop balanced on the arm of the couch, barefoot and my hair pulled in a loose knot. Sunlight filtered in through the curtains, catching dust motes in the air as if the world itself had slowed to watch me work. The company's charity gala, a fundraiser for less privileged children, was coming up and I found myself caught in the middle of it. Now that I worked closely with Mrs. Gravestone, I was overseeing a lot of tasks I wouldn't normally be opportuned to work on. It wasn't very difficult and I didn't even have to work on it right now but I hated to be idle and I wanted to get my mind off the events of the past few days.I scribbled notes, adjusting themes and layouts. Mrs. Gravestone had been insistent on something that genuinely meant something. I took it to me

VALENI felt disturbed. Mother had been acting too strangely of late and I feared she would do something so drastic, it would unravel everything in the worst way possible. The unease I felt dulled the ecstasy of triumph. The company had won. Publicly, undeniably and by a landslide too. It was the type of victory that would be written about, studied, referenced in future competitions as a benchmark. Our name was all over the papers, Natalie's praise were being sung in such a manner that even mother couldn't ignore. And yet, I felt a heavy and unmoving stone sitting in the middle of my chest, only growing denser with every passing hour. I could see it in my mother's words and movements. It wasn't just pride, this was strategy. Calculation. She kept watching Natalie with an intensity that unnerved me."Mother," I said moving closer to her desk immediately Natalie was out the door. She had turned to the files on her desk, reviewing documents that seemed to never end. She didn't look up at

NATALIEMy phone buzzed on the space beside me.I had just finished adjusting the pillow behind my back and I grumbled as I slowly and carefully reached for the phone. My body still protested certain movements, although the doctors had assured me that healing would be steady now. I took care of myself the best way I could, rested adequately and took my supplements hoping to force my body into a quick, total recovery. When I glanced at the screen, I felt my stomach tighten just a little. Mrs Gravestone's name crawled lazily across.I would be working directly under her now which meant I should probably get used to calls like these but I doubted that I could. Her air of intimidation could be passed across through the phone as I had come to realize. I hesitated for a little while before I answered."Hello, Mrs. Gravestone," I said carefully. I wished, stupidly that she would say it was a mistake and she had been meaning to call someone else."You're okay now, aren't you?"I started to an

NATALIEI awoke with a start, my throat saturated with more air than I could contain. My chest heaved as if my head had been underwater and I had just broken the surface. My eyes flew open, panic roaring through me even before I processed my surroundings. The ceiling was too white, the lights too bright, blurring and doubling as my vision struggled to focus. I heard a rhythmic beeping nearby that cut through my skull like a knife. For a long frightening beat, I didn't know where I was. My body felt heavy, sluggish, like I was trapped inside a box that was too small for me. My limbs refused to respond as I tried to move them, my throat burned and my head pounded. There was a strange butter taste in my mouth, almost metallic. I sucked in a quick, shallow breath."What—what," I whispered hoarsely, my chest pounding even harder. "What's happening?""Natalie," a voice sounded beside me. It was familiar, firm.I turned slightly toward the sound, and the room finally began to come into focus

MALCOLMI felt pain as I pushed through the crowded club, the bass rattling through my chest as sweat slicked my skin and the air pressed hot against my lungs.Pain had become a familiar companion by now. It wasn't the sharp, restricting kind that forced me down and incapacitated me. It was the dull, persistent ache that lived in my bones and reminded me with each movement that my body needed more rest.I knew I shouldn't be here. The doctors, nurses, even my own brain had warned me several times not to push myself hard but the mere me think of Natalie was enough to push reason out that window. I'd split up from Valen earlier near the bar, telling him I'd check the back hallways while he scanned the dance floor. I couldn't tolerate that amount of noise and my body wouldn't move as quickly as I wanted it to.Each step tugged at the stitches I acted like I couldn't feel. I pressed a hand briefly to my side to ground myself and forced a breath in and out. I wasn't going to stop until I f

VALENI was sitting in the quiet of my living room, staring at the muted TV alternating between trying to read the lips of the presenter and letting myself drown in my thoughts when my phone rang with a jarring sound on the table in front of me.I snatched it up, surprised to see Natalie's name crawling across the screen. I glanced up at the time. It was late and she had never called me at this time before. With everything that had happened and was happening, I couldn't help the sudden anxiety I felt. What if something was happening to her?I answered the call, pressing it tightly to my ear. "Natalie?" I called tentatively. She didn't respond right away. Instead, the sound of music flooded into my ear. Loud, discordant music, bass thudding hard enough I could almost feel it in my head. In the background, voices overlapped, sharp and careless laughter, the sound of glasses clinking. It was pure chaos."Natalie?" I called again, sitting up straighter. Why had she called me if she wasn't
