Chapter 2

Author: Jean Shea
Sheryl stared at the string of words on her screen. She was stunned. She knew what every word meant. But strung together like this, they suddenly felt foreign.

The first name was her husband's. The second was her best friend.

Sheryl had met Brandon in college. Back then, his pursuit of her had been nothing short of dramatic.

There were flowers, breakfast deliveries, and stuffed animals. He had even treated her classmates to drinks. Everyone on campus knew just how deep his love for her ran and how devoted he was.

He had been willing to go to any lengths for her, including risking his own life.

Through all these years, his love had never changed.

Vivian had been Sheryl's college roommate for two years. That time together had made them inseparable. She had watched Sheryl and Brandon's entire relationship unfold from day one.

Vivian had never liked Brandon. She never had anything nice to say about him.

At their wedding, Vivian had even teared up while warning Brandon, "You'd better treat her well, or I'll make you regret it."

Sheryl couldn't understand. What reason would two people who rarely met have to meet up in a hotel room?

She wasn't naive.

This clearly pointed to an affair.

Sheryl couldn't believe it. She had never imagined Brandon would cheat on her. He loved her so dearly and cared for her so much. Why would he cheat on her? Let alone with VIvian?

It didn't make sense.

But then, images from the incident on Riverpoint Road popped into her mind. Her heart began to pound uncontrollably. It was as if it would burst out of her chest at any moment.

The afternoon dragged on excruciatingly slowly. Every minute was torture for Sheryl. She kept checking the time on her phone.

Finally, around dusk, Brandon sent her a message.

"Sorry, Sheryl. Something urgent came up at work. I need to take care of it. I won't be able to make it for dinner. Let's watch the movie tomorrow instead, okay?"

Her heart sank.

They had made plans to dine at a fusion restaurant tonight. They were supposed to have dinner before watching a newly released movie. They'd made the reservation for the restaurant yesterday, the same for the movie tickets.

Suddenly, she felt a suffocating sensation in her chest. It was getting a little hard to breathe.

It then hit her that Brandon had always been someone who kept his promises. Regardless of the significance, if he said he'd do something, he always kept his word.

But when did that start to change?

Was it this year or last year?

Gradually, the cancellations had increased. He gave one excuse after another.

Sheryl didn't reply to him. Feeling troubled, she waited until half past eight before grabbing her bag and car keys. She drove to the Kingston Hotel mentioned in the anonymous message.

After getting directions from the receptionist, she took the elevator to the fourteenth floor.

She stood outside room 1408 and glanced at her phone.

It was three minutes past nine.

Her finger hovered over the doorbell. She hesitated. Nervousness surged through her like a rising tide. After inhaling deeply, she calmed herself and pressed the doorbell.

About ten seconds later, the door was opened by a smiling woman. It was a face she knew all too well.

It was Vivian.

Although Sheryl had mentally prepared for this, she still froze. The light in her eyes dimmed in an instant.

Vivian, too, quickly dropped her excited expression. It was replaced with visible panic.

She was wearing a black silk dress that revealed her flawless neck and collarbones. The soft fabric clung to her figure, and her neckline was attention-grabbing. She had very light makeup on her face. Her eyes sparkled with a hint of allure.

Even women would find her attractive, let alone men.

Vivian clutched her chest awkwardly, forcing a nervous smile as she tried to compose herself.

"Sheryl, what are you doing here?"

Sheryl could see every little change in Vivian's expression. She felt a chill down her spine. It was as if someone had torn her heart into two. Her fingers clenched tighter around her purse, though her expression remained unreadable.

She glanced past Vivian into the room, raised her brows, and spoke in a sly tone. "And you? What's this?"

Vivian stiffened. Her lips parted slightly, gaze darting about, before mumbling, "I-I've started seeing someone."

A boyfriend?

From what Sheryl could recall, Vivian had been in two serious relationships back in college.

The most recent one had lasted nearly three years. It ended because the guy went abroad, and the long-distance relationship had ended within three months after he left.

Since then, despite many admirers due to Vivian's good looks, she hadn't dated anyone. Sheryl had always assumed Vivian still hadn't gotten over her ex.

They'd known each other for years. Sheryl was confident she knew Vivian well enough. Just by looking at her face and microexpressions now, Sheryl could tell she was clearly lying.

Still, Sheryl smiled, the surprise on her face timed just right.

"Really? About time you moved on!"

Vivian played along and pretended to be embarrassed. "I couldn't live in the past forever. I thought I'd give this one a shot. We only made it official recently. I was planning to tell you after my vacation."

Sheryl picked up her cue smoothly. "That's the spirit. It's been years. You should've moved on long ago."

Vivian smiled, though a hint of suspicion appeared in her eyes. "But wait, what are you doing here, Sheryl?"

Sheryl ignored the question. Instead, she leaned in and teased, "So? Where is he? I want to see the guy who finally won you over! Look at you, all dolled up in a silk nightie. Are you trying to kill him with temptation?"

Sheryl wanted to know who Vivian's boyfriend really was.

Was Brandon in there? If he was, how would she face it? What would she say?

She didn't dare think further. Her fingertips were turning pale. Her heart pounded as if it would leap out of her chest at any moment.

Vivian smacked her hand playfully before pulling her dress back.

"Oh, stop it! He's not here yet. I thought you were him just now. Sheryl, stop teasing me!"

The smile on Vivian's face when she opened the door really had been genuine. That meant this so-called boyfriend really hadn't arrived yet.

Sheryl had mixed emotions, but that crushing weight lightened just a little. Maybe she simply wasn't ready to confront the truth yet.

Still smiling, she said, "Alright then, I'll let you two lovebirds have your fun. Bring him to dinner next time."

She turned to leave.

Vivian quickly grabbed her arm. "Wait, why are you even here?"

Sheryl paused. Showing up out of nowhere did seem suspicious. She might as well lay it out and see how Vivian responded.

She turned around after concealing her pained expression. "To catch a cheater."

"What?" Vivian's pupils contracted. "Who?"

"Who else? It's obviously Brandon," Sheryl replied.

Vivian's face was drained of color. Her chest clenched painfully as she forced out the words.

"Brandon? With who?"

Sheryl gave her a side glance and shook her head.

"No idea. Someone called me after work today and said they saw Brandon entering this hotel with a woman, and that they were on the fourteenth floor. They didn't say which room. I knocked on a few doors at random and got cussed out by someone too."

Vivian glanced at the room next door where Sheryl had subtly gestured. Her tense shoulders relaxed slightly.

She sounded furious when she spoke. "That's outrageous! Look, I may not like Brandon, but even I'll admit that he loves you like crazy. Everyone sees how devoted he is. He'd never cheat. Someone's just trying to stir up drama and ruin your marriage!"

Then her tone shifted.

"But if he did dare betray you, I'd be the first to beat him up."

"Some person probably made it up. I'll get Brandon to look into it," Sheryl said while trying to hide the pain in her eyes. She then teased playfully, "I'm leaving. Enjoy your night."

Vivian gave Sheryl an embarrassed look and watched her leave. After Sheryl had gone, Vivian's smile gradually faded, and she clenched her fists.

Sheryl was stunned. She blinked in confusion. "W-What?"Steven knew she had heard him clearly and didn't repeat himself. Instead, he continued to press, "How many times a week?"Sheryl considered herself a straightforward person, but talking about such a personal subject with a stranger made her feel incredibly awkward. Especially since this man was handsome and wore an expression of indifference. He didn't even blink."Does this have anything to do with my consultation for divorce?""Yes," Steven replied. "It has to do with how determined you are to divorce. Did you come here impulsively?"He had handled many divorce cases that stemmed from infidelity. Most wives, upon discovering their husbands' betrayal, were too shocked to handle it and came to consult a lawyer. But in the end, after various efforts by the husbands to win them back, they chose to forgive and give their husbands another chance. He didn't like wasting time or doing unnecessary work.Sheryl considered herself

He quickly approached her. "What happened?""Got some oil in my eyes. I can't open them."Brandon frowned and pulled out a chair beside her. He sat down and quickly held her chin. He then grabbed her restless hand. "Let me see. Don't rub them."Even with her eyes closed, the redness and swelling were obvious."Are you stupid? What if you hurt your eyes?" Brandon scolded her gently. He sounded a little concerned. He wiped away her tears with his thumb. When Brandon came out, Sheryl was already lying down with her eyes closed. He saw her swollen eyelids. Vivian forced a seemingly surprised smile and quickly came up with an excuse. "I just brought my bag over for some maintenance. Figured I'd shop around a little too."She was carrying a pink Chanel bag. The starting price was probably around eighty thousand dollars.Sheryl recognized the bag. She'd seen it on Vivian's Instagram before. It was one of the many bags Brandon had gifted her.Raising an eyebrow, Sheryl asked, "That bag really suits you. When did you get it? I've got the same one, except mine's in white."That one had been a gift from Brandon too. He brought it back from a business trip in Fedoria. Sheryl's post had gone up a day before Vivian's."My boyfriend gave it to me," Vivian replied, clutching the bag's chain tighter as she quickly changed the subject. "What about you two? What are you doing here?""My mother-in-law's birthday is coming up. Thought I'd come pick out a gift for her," Sheryl answered with a smile. "Just so happened to run into him picking up a bag

Sheryl clenched her fists tightly. Brandon really had given Vivian quite a lot of things."Boyfriend? Vivian, when did that happen? Congratulations!"The nearby colleagues gasped in surprise. They smiled and offered their congratulations.Vivian replied with a shy smile, "Thank you! This afternoon I'll have him treat everyone to coffee."The coworkers politely declined. "Oh, that's too much, we can't accept that.""It's fine," Vivian said generously. "It's just coffee."Back in college, Sheryl had already noticed that Vivian was great at winning people over. There were always one or two folks gathered around her. That sweet, innocent, and kind act of hers was the perfect disguise. Now that she thought about it, Elaine was the exact same type.It turned out that Vivian was the one who would've made the perfect daughter-in-law for Elaine."Sheryl, what do you want for afternoon tea?" Once the waiter left, silence fell between them. They seemed to have nothing to talk about.Sheryl realized that Steven only got talkative when it came to legal matters. Otherwise, he was a man of few words. He didn't find the silence awkward at all.Sheryl felt a little uneasy. She thought of the stack of documents on his desk earlier, all related to Vincent's case, and took the initiative to ask, "How's the investigation on Vincent's case going? Did they catch the guy who pawned the pen?""They did." Steven paused for a second. "He was caught red-handed by Selena when she came out of the shower. She resisted, and he accidentally killed her.""Why was Vincent at Selena's place that night?"Steven lifted his gaze and gave her a long look. "Those are case details. Not something I should disclose."Sheryl got the hint and took a tactical sip of water. "Right. Shouldn't have asked."The truth was that he could tell her. Sheryl originally thought the conversation outside would last no more than thirty minutes. But to her surprise, an hour and a half passed, and Margaret Holden was still going on and on.There wasn't a chair or sofa in the room, and she didn't feel comfortable sitting on the bed, so her legs had gone a bit numb. After another ten minutes, the hidden door finally slid open. Sheryl paused mid-leg-stretch and stared blankly at the man outside. After a few seconds, she quickly straightened up and gave him an awkward smile. "Has Mrs. Holden left?"Steven glanced at the perfectly untouched bed. His lips moved slightly. "Just left. Come on out.""Oh, okay."As Sheryl lifted her leg to move, she stumbled slightly. Steven instinctively reached out and caught her arm.Feeling embarrassed, she quickly pulled her arm away. "My legs are a little numb. Under those conditions, you could be exempt from punishment."Sheryl finally began to relax a little after hearing his calm voice."Is Veloura Atelier evading taxes?" he asked.Sheryl pursed her lips and clutched her phone more tightly. "I'm not sure. I just suddenly thought of it and wanted to ask."Steven gave a nonchalant grunt. "If that's the case, I'd suggest going to the tax bureau and looking into it. Use yourself as bait and catch them off guard. That's when they'll slip up."It was a clever tactic. It wouldn't affect her much personally. Maybe she really would find something or even dig up some key evidence.Once her pounding heart finally settled, she was ready to get up.Her p

Thinking back now, it really was stupid of her. She smiled at herself mockingly."Was there a written IOU for that three million?"Sheryl opened her mouth but shook her head. A trace of helplessness clouded her eyes.If she couldn't prove that the three million was a loan to Elaine, then as the investor and legal representative, she would definitely be implicated."Did you ever participate in any business decisions? Board meetings? Sign any establishment documents for the beauty salon?" Steven asked.Sheryl shook her head. "No. Choosing the location, renovation, purchasing all the equipment, hiring, and even the business planning model, I wasn't involved in any of it. All I did was give her the initial three million, and in return she made me the legal representative and gave me a profit share every six months.""How many times have you received them?""Only once so far," Sheryl replied. "The next payout is due next month. I only found out yesterday from her that the next payout

Sheryl didn't sleep well. She kept waking up throughout the night.By the time she opened her eyes again around seven, she felt no trace of drowsiness. She tossed back the covers and got up to wash and change. When she came downstairs, Brandon was sitting at the dining table and typing on his phone. His expression was focused and serious. She could see him smiling a little. The scene felt oddly familiar to Sheryl. She had a sense of déjà vu.It looked just like when they had been dating and sending each other affectionate texts. They'd gone through a long phase like that. Now, she was watching him do the same thing with another woman. It still hurt, but strangely, it didn't hurt as much as it used to."Good morning, Mrs. Simrod." Simon nodded and stood up with Elaine. Still holding her hand, he spoke just in time. "When it comes to children, it's all about fate. In the Simrod family, there's no rule that says a woman has to have a child within the first year or two of marriage."Alright. Since everyone's here, let's eat," he added. That line was a direct slap in Gloria's face.Gloria let out a cold chuckle. "All I did was casually ask Sheryl about having a baby, and look at you, jumping to defend her as if your life's at stake. Whatever Elaine says is always right, isn't it?"Simon's expression turned grim, but Gloria wasn't planning to stick around to see his reaction. She stood up gracefully, smoothed the side of her hair, and said breezily, "I'm not feeling well. I'll skip dinner. Wouldn't want to ruin your mood either."With that, she turned around and walked out.If not for the deep entanglement of interests between their two families, she would have divorced him long ago.
