Ding!

Sheryl Moran had just arrived at the parking lot when her phone chimed with a new message. She reflexively tapped it open, and a single line of text popped up.

"Don't take Riverpoint Road. It's dangerous!"

It came from an unknown number with no name attached.

Riverpoint Road was the fastest and most direct route from her house to Moran Art Gallery.

Sheryl frowned, confused. She assumed it was a misdirected message or just spam, so she ignored it. She got into the driver's seat and started the car.

Evening rush hour had passed, so traffic was smooth. As she waited for the green light at an intersection, another notification lit up her screen.

She glanced over. It was the same number again, but a new message.

"8:30 PM, chain collision on Riverpoint Road. Don't go."

Sheryl was a little stunned. She frowned. It was eight twenty three. Once the light turned green, the next turn would take her straight to Riverpoint Road.

Suddenly, her phone rang. It was her assistant, Jonah Rivers.

Snapping out of her daze, she picked up and answered, "Hello?"

"Sheryl, you forgot the watch you bought for Mr. Simrod."

She blinked. Today marked her and Brandon Simrod's third wedding anniversary. They'd already planned how they'd celebrate, but three days ago, he had been called away on a last-minute business trip.

She had bought the watch a few days earlier and kept it tucked away in her desk drawer so she wouldn't forget.

Yet, she had still forgotten it. The moment Brandon had called to say he was back, she'd rushed out with just her phone and coat.

Thankfully, Jonah had a habit of tidying up the office before she left for the day.

"I'll come back and grab it now."

After ending the call, she looked at the mysterious text again. A few seconds passed before a honking car behind her jolted her back. The light had turned green. She tossed the phone aside and did a U-turn, heading back toward the gallery.

When she arrived, Jonah was already waiting by the entrance with the watch in her hand.

Sheryl took it with a smile. "Thanks."

-

On the way back, she saw one, then two, then three ambulances racing down the road, flanked by several police cars and traffic units. The sound of sirens filled the night.

'What's going on?'

A wave of unease washed over her. She tightened her grip on the wheel.

At the next intersection, a traffic officer stopped her. "There's been a chain collision on Riverpoint Road. The road's closed."

'Chain collision?'

Sheryl's heartbeat quickened as her thoughts returned to the messages she had brushed off as a prank.

The officer said something else, but she couldn't register a single word. The chill of late autumn wind swept into the car, but she didn't feel cold at all. She was sweating.

The adrenaline rush of a near miss hit her hard, making her heart pound as reality sank in.

The officer was gone.

Suddenly recalling the messages, she pulled over, picked up her phone, and quickly typed.

"Who are you? How did you know there would be a chain collision on Riverpoint Road?"

She hit send, only to get a system reply.

"Message failed to send."

Frowning, she tried again. She got the same result. She tapped the number to call it instead.

There was no ringing, only an error message.

"Call failed."

'What's going on?'

She could neither send messages nor make a call to this number. Sheryl frowned in confusion. Before she could think further, Brandon's name popped up on her screen.

"Sheryl, how much longer till you're home?"

His voice on the other end was deep and soothing. He could always help her get rid of all her worries.

"There was an accident on Riverpoint Road. I have to take a detour."

His voice instantly turned anxious. "An accident? Are you okay? Are you hurt? Where are you? I'll come pick you up."

Sheryl smiled. "I'm fine. I'll be home soon."

Still worried, Brandon insisted on a few more warnings before finally hanging up.

She pushed the mysterious messages to the back of her mind and started the car again. This time, she took a different route home.

By the time she arrived, the kitchen was already filled with the scent of warm, savory dishes. While she changed her shoes, Brandon stepped forward in an apron.

He wore a white shirt and black slacks. He was tall, with striking features, and golden-rimmed glasses, behind which showed a look of concern.

"Are you sure you're not hurt?"

Sheryl smiled, spun in a circle, and reassured him. "I'm fine. The cops blocked the road before I could even get close."

Brandon gave her a once-over and finally sighed in relief. "Good. I couldn't even continue cooking after our call."

"You didn't have to cook, though. We could've just gone out. You've been on a plane for hours. You should rest."

She noticed he hadn't even changed clothes yet. She pursed her lips and looked at him affectionately.

Brandon smiled. "I'm not tired. I got plenty of rest on the flight. Besides, today's our anniversary. I couldn't take you to Velmira for the Nevet exhibition like we planned, so at least let me make you your favorite dishes."

In Sheryl's eyes, Brandon was everything anyone could dream of. Not only was he born into wealth, but he was also tall, handsome, gentle, thoughtful, romantic, and deeply devoted. He didn't smoke or drink, had a calm temperament, cooked, and cared deeply for her.

They had been in a relationship for three years, and married for another three. He always put her first.

Even with a housekeeper, he often took the time to cook for her himself. He did so many things that were completely beneath someone of his status, yet he never minded.

She stepped forward, wrapped her arms around his waist, pressed her face to his chest, and closed her eyes.

"Why are you so good to me?" she asked.

Brandon chuckled before rubbing the back of her head affectionately. "You're my wife. Who else would I be good to?"

They stayed like that for a long moment until he finally kissed her temple and said gently, "I left the stove on. Go upstairs and change. Wash up. Are you hungry? Just two more dishes and we can eat."

Sheryl nodded and headed up.

Brandon was romantic to his core. Every anniversary, he found new ways to surprise her. This year may have come with a twist, but the surprise still arrived.

When she came back down, the table was already set with candles, flowers, and a diamond necklace.

Brandon fastened it around her neck himself. He smiled gently. "I knew this would suit you the moment I saw it, and I was right."

Sheryl thanked him and gave him the watch she had picked out. "I think this suits you too."

"Thank you, Honey. I like anything that's from you."

He pulled her into his arms, ready to commemorate their sweet night with a kiss, until Sheryl stopped him.

"My period started."

"Didn't you say that wasn't for another week?"

Sheryl looked up. "I'm always on time. Off by a day or two, tops."

Brandon froze before burying his face in her neck and laughed. "Must've been the wine. It totally messed up my memory."

Sheryl didn't think much of it. She truly believed he'd just gotten confused.

It wasn't until three days later that the number, which had gone silent since the crash, messaged her again.

"Kingston Hotel, 9 PM tonight, Room 1408. Brandon Simrod and Vivian Niger."

She went straight into her office and immediately started browsing Starrism International's website. The pen's registered owner was a social influencer named Selena Shaw.Over three months ago, she had been found dead in her home after being stabbed in the abdomen. The case had made headlines everywhere, and two months ago, the police had arrested the murderer. It was Selena's boyfriend, Vincent Holden.Vincent was a well-known playboy in Nexville. Sheryl was stunned. She blinked in confusion. "W-What?"Steven knew she had heard him clearly and didn't repeat himself. Instead, he continued to press, "How many times a week?"Sheryl considered herself a straightforward person, but talking about such a personal subject with a stranger made her feel incredibly awkward. Especially since this man was handsome and wore an expression of indifference. He didn't even blink."Does this have anything to do with my consultation for divorce?""Yes," Steven replied. "It has to do with how determined you are to divorce. Did you come here impulsively?"He had handled many divorce cases that stemmed from infidelity. Most wives, upon discovering their husbands' betrayal, were too shocked to handle it and came to consult a lawyer. But in the end, after various efforts by the husbands to win them back, they chose to forgive and give their husbands another chance. He didn't like wasting time or doing unnecessary work.Sheryl considered herself

Sheryl clutched her phone as she stood by the wall and listened to Brandon pour sweet words to Vivian over the phone. Every second of it felt like torture to her.She realized she didn't have it in her to listen any longer. Instead, she cowardly chose to turn off the recording and walk away.Brandon didn't take long to return. He entered the dining room and saw her with her head down while she wiped her eyes. He quickly approached her. "What happened?""Got some oil in my eyes. I can't open them."Brandon frowned and pulled out a chair beside her. He sat down and quickly held her chin. He then grabbed her restless hand. "Let me see. Don't rub them."Even with her eyes closed, the redness and swelling were obvious."Are you stupid? What if you hurt your eyes?" Brandon scolded her gently. He sounded a little concerned. He wiped away her tears with his thumb. "Come on, let's wash it off."Sheryl's lips moved but no sound came out.Her eyes were closed, so she couldn't see his expr

When Brandon came out, Sheryl was already lying down with her eyes closed. He saw her swollen eyelids. After gently touching her cheek with a pained look, he turned off the lights and slipped under the covers. As he pulled her into his arms, he couldn't help but whisper in her ear, "Baby, I love you. Good night."Sheryl wasn't asleep. Every word was painful to hear. If he loved her, why would he cheat? His love felt cheap. She turned over naturally, or at least pretended to, and faced away from him. Silent tears rolled down her cheeks and soaked into the pillow. It was another sleepless night. She didn't know how long she cried for, or when she eventually fell asleep. The night was restless. One dream after another invaded her sleep.By the time she woke, it was already one in the afternoon. Vivian forced a seemingly surprised smile and quickly came up with an excuse. "I just brought my bag over for some maintenance. Figured I'd shop around a little too."She was carrying a pink Chanel bag. The starting price was probably around eighty thousand dollars.Sheryl recognized the bag. She'd seen it on Vivian's Instagram before. It was one of the many bags Brandon had gifted her.Raising an eyebrow, Sheryl asked, "That bag really suits you. When did you get it? I've got the same one, except mine's in white."That one had been a gift from Brandon too. He brought it back from a business trip in Fedoria. Sheryl's post had gone up a day before Vivian's."My boyfriend gave it to me," Vivian replied, clutching the bag's chain tighter as she quickly changed the subject. "What about you two? What are you doing here?""My mother-in-law's birthday is coming up. Thought I'd come pick out a gift for her," Sheryl answered with a smile. "Just so happened to run into him picking up a bag

Vivian had posted a new update that evening."My husband gave me this month's allowance. It went through at six minutes to eight that night.Vivian hadn't blurred the WhatsApp profile photo, contact name, or chat log."I miss you so much," Vivian wrote."I miss you too, baby," Brandon replied."If you miss me, why don't you come see me? Hmph!" There was an angry face emoji at the end.Brandon had replied with a voice message."You'd better not lie to me. I bought coffee for my coworkers this afternoon saying you did it. Sheryl clenched her fists tightly. Brandon really had given Vivian quite a lot of things."Boyfriend? Vivian, when did that happen? Congratulations!"The nearby colleagues gasped in surprise. They smiled and offered their congratulations.Vivian replied with a shy smile, "Thank you! This afternoon I'll have him treat everyone to coffee."The coworkers politely declined. "Oh, that's too much, we can't accept that.""It's fine," Vivian said generously. "It's just coffee."Back in college, Sheryl had already noticed that Vivian was great at winning people over. There were always one or two folks gathered around her. That sweet, innocent, and kind act of hers was the perfect disguise. Now that she thought about it, Elaine was the exact same type.It turned out that Vivian was the one who would've made the perfect daughter-in-law for Elaine."Sheryl, what do you want for afternoon tea?" Once the waiter left, silence fell between them. They seemed to have nothing to talk about.Sheryl realized that Steven only got talkative when it came to legal matters. Otherwise, he was a man of few words. He didn't find the silence awkward at all.Sheryl felt a little uneasy. She thought of the stack of documents on his desk earlier, all related to Vincent's case, and took the initiative to ask, "How's the investigation on Vincent's case going? Did they catch the guy who pawned the pen?""They did." Steven paused for a second. "He was caught red-handed by Selena when she came out of the shower. She resisted, and he accidentally killed her.""Why was Vincent at Selena's place that night?"Steven lifted his gaze and gave her a long look. "Those are case details. Not something I should disclose."Sheryl got the hint and took a tactical sip of water. "Right. Shouldn't have asked."The truth was that he could tell her. That night, Vincent had arranged via WhatsApp to hook up wit

Sheryl originally thought the conversation outside would last no more than thirty minutes. But to her surprise, an hour and a half passed, and Margaret Holden was still going on and on.There wasn't a chair or sofa in the room, and she didn't feel comfortable sitting on the bed, so her legs had gone a bit numb. After another ten minutes, the hidden door finally slid open. Sheryl paused mid-leg-stretch and stared blankly at the man outside. After a few seconds, she quickly straightened up and gave him an awkward smile. "Has Mrs. Holden left?"Steven glanced at the perfectly untouched bed. His lips moved slightly. "Just left. Come on out.""Oh, okay."As Sheryl lifted her leg to move, she stumbled slightly. Steven instinctively reached out and caught her arm.Feeling embarrassed, she quickly pulled her arm away. "My legs are a little numb. Steven glanced at her trembling hand without making it obvious. "Yes." He set down his coffee cup and added, "But the tax bureau will evaluate based on the severity of the case. "You weren't the one who evaded the taxes, you weren't aware of the situation, and you're the one making the report. Under those conditions, you could be exempt from punishment."Sheryl finally began to relax a little after hearing his calm voice."Is Veloura Atelier evading taxes?" he asked.Sheryl pursed her lips and clutched her phone more tightly. "I'm not sure. I just suddenly thought of it and wanted to ask."Steven gave a nonchalant grunt. "If that's the case, I'd suggest going to the tax bureau and looking into it. Use yourself as bait and catch them off guard. That's when they'll slip up."It was a clever tactic. It wouldn't affect her much personally. Maybe she really would find something or even dig up some key evidence.Once her pounding heart finally settled, she was ready to get up.Her p

Thinking back now, it really was stupid of her. She smiled at herself mockingly."Was there a written IOU for that three million?"Sheryl opened her mouth but shook her head. A trace of helplessness clouded her eyes.If she couldn't prove that the three million was a loan to Elaine, then as the investor and legal representative, she would definitely be implicated."Did you ever participate in any business decisions? Board meetings? Sign any establishment documents for the beauty salon?" Steven asked.Sheryl shook her head. "No. Choosing the location, renovation, purchasing all the equipment, hiring, and even the business planning model, I wasn't involved in any of it. All I did was give her the initial three million, and in return she made me the legal representative and gave me a profit share every six months.""How many times have you received them?""Only once so far," Sheryl replied. "The next payout is due next month. I only found out yesterday from her that the next payout

"Yeah, I know it's important," Sheryl said.It had been raining for several days in Nexville, and today was no different. It was still cloudy. After breakfast, Sheryl watched as Brandon drove off to work. Just as she turned around, her phone chimed."Take the contract you signed with Elaine to Steven. He will help you."Sheryl stared at the text. Her gaze intensified.Who was sending these? Before this, she and Steven were strangers. Even now, their relationship was still not close. How could this person be so sure Steven would help her?Was it just because he was a lawyer? She couldn't come up with an answer. She put her phone away and went upstairs to retrieve the contracts she had signed with Elaine last year. She had read through them carefully when they were signed, and there hadn't been anything suspicious at the time. After thinking for a moment, she didn't bother with makeup and drove directly to Peterson & Co.When she arrived, she happened to see Steven getting out

Sheryl didn't sleep well. She kept waking up throughout the night.By the time she opened her eyes again around seven, she felt no trace of drowsiness. She tossed back the covers and got up to wash and change. When she came downstairs, Brandon was sitting at the dining table and typing on his phone. His expression was focused and serious. She could see him smiling a little. The scene felt oddly familiar to Sheryl. She had a sense of déjà vu.It looked just like when they had been dating and sending each other affectionate texts. They'd gone through a long phase like that. Now, she was watching him do the same thing with another woman. It still hurt, but strangely, it didn't hurt as much as it used to."Good morning, Mrs. Simrod." He put his phone face-down on the table and got up to meet her. "You're up early today. Don't you

Simon nodded and stood up with Elaine. Still holding her hand, he spoke just in time. "When it comes to children, it's all about fate. In the Simrod family, there's no rule that says a woman has to have a child within the first year or two of marriage."Alright. Since everyone's here, let's eat," he added. That line was a direct slap in Gloria's face.Gloria let out a cold chuckle. "All I did was casually ask Sheryl about having a baby, and look at you, jumping to defend her as if your life's at stake. Whatever Elaine says is always right, isn't it?"Simon's expression turned grim, but Gloria wasn't planning to stick around to see his reaction. She stood up gracefully, smoothed the side of her hair, and said breezily, "I'm not feeling well. I'll skip dinner. Wouldn't want to ruin your mood either."With that, she turned around and walked out.If not for the deep entanglement of interests between their two families, she would have divorced him long ago.
