Chapter 7

Author: Flowers and Beyond
She declined my first call, and the second, and so on...

With reddened eyes, I dialed again and again, and only on at least the 12th call did Zoey finally answer, unhurriedly.

“Is something wrong?”

Hearing Zoey’s cold voice made my heart tremble, and I suddenly remembered that back in high school, when I had just begun studying jewelry design, someone had also accused me of plagiarism, and I had panicked and called her.

That time, she had answered in seconds, and had only said one thing to me. “Don’t panic, I’ll always be there to support you.”

But now, our relationship had already fallen into hell.

After a long silence, I finally asked her in a trembling voice, “Why was my draft in Cameron’s hands?”

Zoey was much more composed than I had expected.

“I was the one who gave it to him.”

“Why?”

I could not accept her casually spoken words; my heart felt crushed and then set aflame.

“You clearly knew the truth—why!”

This was the first time I had ever questioned Zoey.

After a moment of silence, she finally said, “Because I knew the meaning of that necklace, and you know too. It should never have been created, and it absolutely shouldn’t bear your name.”

At that moment, I understood everything and let out a bitter laugh.

So it was still my fault.

It was I who had made her so sensitive; even if it meant my complete ruin, she still wanted to strangle this last lingering thought.

I closed my eyes in despair, my voice already hoarse.

“But do you know that the one who plagiarized wasn’t me—it was Cameron. This stain is fatal to a designer. After this, I would no longer be able to gain a foothold in the jewelry industry. You personally shattered my future!”

“So what? Cameron only made a mistake by accident; he didn’t mean it. What’s the harm in you taking the blame for him once? When I supported you in studying jewelry design, it was only so you’d have a hobby. I never expected you to achieve anything great. You don’t need to worry about your future—I'll support you for the rest of your life as compensation.”

With that said, Zoey hung up.

I stood there in a daze, the phone slipping from my hand and hitting the floor without me noticing.

The room was brightly lit, reflecting my haggard figure standing before the window—hair messy, face exhausted, eyes bloodshot.

Looking at myself, I felt momentarily disoriented.

Was this still me?

I no longer recognized myself—where had that once spirited young man gone?

And the sister-in-law who had always stayed beside him, protected him, and sworn never to abandon him—where had she gone?

I realized that I could no longer find the Zoey of the past.

After the plagiarism incident, my exhibition ended in dismal failure, but I became even more determined to cut ties with Zoey completely, leaving not a single debt between us.

Fortunately, a few friends around me were still willing to believe me and introduced me to several design tasks from their own families, but it was still not enough.

To repay the money, I began earning however I could, regardless of status or dignity—I had worked as a janitor for wealthy families and as a waiter in high-end venues.

In the last three days before going abroad, I finally managed to gather 16 million.

Today was my last day as a waiter. Near the end of my shift, I pulled myself together, pushed open the private room door, and walked in—this was my final shift.

I had not expected to run into her here.

A crowd of men and women were gathered around Zoey and Cameron, playing games.

When I walked in, Zoey had just lost that round.

She drew her own punishment.

“Choose someone of the opposite sex you like and feed him red wine mouth-to-mouth.”

The room instantly erupted into cheers and teasing.

Cameron pressed his lips nervously, readying himself.

But in the next second, Zoey pushed through the crowd and saw me. She picked up a wine glass and walked toward me.

Everyone’s eyes followed her steps to me; the room fell silent, shock written on every face.

While everyone was still stunned, Zoey simply placed the wine glass before me and said softly, “Fill it to the brim. Don’t leave. You’ll need to refill it later.”

I suddenly realized what she intended to do, and my mind went blank with a dull boom.

I knew what she wanted me to witness what she was about to do, yet perhaps because I had already begun to let go, my heart felt no pain—only numbness.

“Alright.”

A moment later, I met Zoey’s gaze, gave a slight smile, and filled her glass to the brim.

She turned without hesitation, returned to Cameron’s side, took a big sip of wine, then sat directly on his lap and kissed him fiercely.

The room erupted into cheers, and I saw everything clearly.

The wine in the glass soon ran out, but Cameron grabbed Zoey, stopping her from walking toward me.

He took out a diamond ring, knelt on one knee, and said gently, “Zoey, will you marry me?”

Cameron proposed to Zoey.

The room instantly burst into commotion, everyone urging her to agree quickly.

The private room was too noisy, and I didn’t hear what Zoey said clearly, but I didn’t care.

Looking down at the time, I realized my shift was over.

Handing the wine bottle to a colleague who had just come in, I walked out of the private room without the slightest reluctance and let out a long breath.

Finally, everything was coming to an end.

Cameron nodded. Before leaving, the two of them even shared a passionate kiss right in front of me, and only then did he walk out."They were just drafts. Try to see if you can recover them. If not, then let it go. They aren’t anything important. Stay at home. Cancel the lease on that place. You're not going back.""I'm going out to eat with Cameron. I’ll bring whatever you want back for you."Zoey instructed me calmly and then stepped forward, ready to leave.I couldn't believe this was the way she chose to handle the situation.Just like that?"Zoey, wait."I stopped her, my chest feeling as though a huge stone were wedged inside, making it hard to breathe."Cameron obviously stole my drafts—why won’t you believe me? You clearly know this was his fault—this time, the last time, and the time before! Those are my work. What right do you have to decide if it's important or not?"Faced with my suffocated, aggrieved questioning, Zoey still remained calm."Cameron is my fiance.

"What were you standing at the door for? Sam, did you quarrel with your sister-in-law?"When Cameron walked in and saw that both Zoey and I looked upset, he naturally guessed what had happened."You’ve stepped over the line, Sam. Your sister-in-law had raised you with such hardship and care. No matter what happened, you shouldn't have quarreled with her. Zoey, babe, don't be angry. I’ll coax you later."I couldn't be bothered with Cameron's tone, which was laced with gloating, and I liked even less hearing him talking as if he was already Zoey’s husband.I reached out and snatched my laptop back."Give it back! You didn't touch anything inside, did you?"I turned on the laptop to check as I stared at Cameron suspiciously."What did you mean by that? I just borrowed your laptop to check its performance. Why would I touch your things?"Cameron frowned as well."See? I told you Cameron wouldn't touch your things. You're just too sensitive."Zoey breathed a sigh of relief.Altho

But no one mentioned how he had bullied me day after day; I only acted because I had reached my limit.Later, I was punished to stand in the hallway for an entire day, and after school the form tutor notified Zoey to come and compensate the other child. It was the first time I did not dare look into Zoey's eyes—I knew I had made a mistake and caused her enormous trouble. But she neither hit nor scolded me; instead, she shielded me firmly behind her and believed in me without hesitation."Sam would never hit someone for no reason. He must have bullied our Sam and done something really bad! We can pay. The Shaw family is not short of money. But please go home and warn your child—if he dares bully Sam again, then we’ll hit him once for every time he bullies Sam in the future. It's fine if he ends up in the hospital each time. I'll still be able to cover all his medical bills!"Her unyielding stance left the other parent speechless, because they knew full well what kind of child they

Zoey stared at me, as if her gaze could see straight through my heart.I trembled inwardly, but I steadied myself quickly."Yes, I only see you as my sister-in-law.""Then why did you keep calling my name after you blacked out last night, and why were you confessing to me?"Had I lost control again in front of her after getting drunk?Faced with her questioning, I was speechless and lowered my head."I don’t remember...""I knew you would give me that excuse. Sam, I’m really disappointed in you!"Her tone suddenly turned icy, enough to make anyone's heart tremble."When will you finally grow up a little? I've told you countless times—there’s no way that we’ll be together. I will always be your sister-in-law.""I know, Zoey. I truly do. I’ve already started letting go and living a new life," I explained sincerely, but all I received was her mocking, disdainful laugh."Sam, do you think I can't tell? This so-called new life of yours—you gave me money, pretended to leave withou

"Zoey, the former Sam had already grown up and no longer wanted to be controlled by you."I met Zoey's gaze. Her expression grew complicated, as if she felt sad, but I no longer cared. I calmly looked away, forced a smile on my face, and clinked glasses with Jane.Inside the private room, the small episode between me and Zoey went unnoticed by everyone.Due to the "male lead" of the story being present, the crowd was coaxing the two of them to recreate the scene from back then. The next moment, Cameron suddenly knelt on one knee, took a delicate jewelry box from his pocket, and held it out toward Zoey."Zoey, it had been so long, yet I didn't expect you still remembered. I know you’re reminding me that I should buy you another ring, so I already bought one in advance. And this one is a proposal ring."Cameron opened the box, revealing the sparkling diamond ring inside. He spoke with deep affection and proposed on the spot, "Zoey, will you marry me?"The room instantly erupted i

  • Love and Emptiness   Chapter 25

"When I saw him, he was completely disheveled, like a drowned rat, but even so, his eyes were still filled with joy when he looked at me. At that moment, my heart ached, and I couldn't help but hold him. We leaned against each other while hiding from the rain. He suddenly told me he had a surprise for me. I was wondering what it was when he suddenly knelt on one knee and took out a ring from his pocket. At the time, he was soaked from head to toe, yet the ring was somehow dry. I was shocked and laughed, calling him an idiot—after all, a ring didn't fear the rain. But he smiled back and told me that while the ring could get wet, his love could not."Everyone listened intently. My lips trembled, and my eyes gradually became wet.But the next second, Zoey's gaze, full of affection, turned to Cameron beside her."That person was Cameron. We confirmed our relationship that very night. That was my most unforgettable moment."As soon as her voice fell, the room filled with admiration.Bu
