Chapter 12 Tempest in a Teapot

last update publish date: 2026-06-23 11:12:43

Val hits the floor running like a boy heading out to the ballfield full of sugar and excitement for what is coming, he goes through to the kitchen grabs the coffee from the housekeeper. The kitchen is already alive with activity when Val strides through and asks if she needs more help settling the contents of her kitchen?. Early morning light spilling across marble counters. The housekeeper, Mrs. Antonella, looks up from organizing the kitchen contents into boxes already aware of the move happening this fast. Her weathered hands pausing mid-motion. Val, you're glowing like a man half your age…She hands him the expression without being asked, a knowing smile crossing her face. The kitchen’s nearly done he sees, and inquires if she wants to be in change of the new staff at the estate giving her the choice to retire early if she wants.

He says I have a question for you how would you feel about running the entire household staff at the estate less physical labor full authority and better pay of course. He leans against the counter, genuinely interested in her answer. Or if you’d rather retire, that’s yours too. Your choice I will support whatever Enzo pads in behind him, tail wagging looking for food and to be let out to potty. She has been with him for years now and wants whatever she wants willing to give her the moon for she has been more of a mother to him than his mother ever was. you want…Mrs. Antonella sets down her coffee cup slowly, her eyes glistening. She’s been with him since he was twenty-three through the worst of it, the blood and the business, the nights he cam home hollow. The Estate ...she says it like she’s tasting the word, testing its weight. You mean it? Full-authority over everything? Her hands rest on her mixing bowls-delicate ceramic, well-loved.

She glances toward the hallway where Zora still sleeps. That woman upstairs...she’s changed you, Val. Real change I like it. Antonella’s voice cracks slightly. I’ll take it, the estate, I want to build something good there with her...with the both of you. She touches his cheek like she did when he was young. Your mother never deserved you, but Zora I think she does. He smiles at her and says Thank you for staying and for seeing her. I do find it surprising you never liked any of my wives, why her what do you see? He asks with genuine respect and curiosity. Antonella’s weathered face softens as she considers the question. She moves to the window, looking out toward the city awakening below. Your wives were acquisitions, Val. Trophies to prove something to yourself or the world I don’t really know. They looked at you like you were a problem to solve.

She turns back to him, her dark eyes sharp as an eagles and just and critical. Zora looks at you like you’re a choice, a choice she is making. She swallows hard knowing this part is going to be harder to say...She’s lived hard, she knows blood and consequences. She don’t flinch from who you are-shes sees it, accepts it, and is still here, that’s rare. I also think that because she says she wants to live on the land not here in the city keeping up appearances that she is more interested in building something real with you, not just living in your shadow or through what your name can offer. That’s why. Val looks at her and nods his head in understanding and thinks wow she really thought a lot about her her, I am happy about this this is good...Hmm yeah I suppose you’re right about that...He laughs and says I should wake sleeping beauty so she can pack up the important stuff and we can head up. Can you make something easy we can eat on the helo?

Antonella’s face breaks into a grin as she moves toward the refrigerator with purpose, already anticipating that very request. Panini with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and roasted peppers. Some fruit, pastries from this morning. I’ll pack it all in a thermal bag so nothing gets too hot during the flight. She says happy that they will be eating her food on the way to their new home. She glances over her shoulder and says give me twenty minutes and everything will be packed and ready, and Val? Wake her gently, she said she’s not a morning person-Marco mentioned it three times yesterday while packing. She says with a hint of laughter as she pulls the ingredients from the frig with practiced efficiency. Enzo follows Val as he leaves the room headed toward the bedroom, sensing the shift in energy. The penthouse is already humming with purpose-the kind that comes before a major change electric. As he walks into the room he stops dead in his tracks for she’s gone not a trace clothes shoes bag gone he drops the cups out of shier panic. The bedroom is empty, the sheet are cold. Val’s espresso cup shatters against the hardwood floor, ceramic shards scattering like his composure. The second cup follows-a hollow crash that echoes through the penthouse. NO, NO, NO, NO, N. His voice cracks as he moves through the room in three strides. The closet is bare, her jacket gone. The drawer where she kept her things next to the bed-emptied.

Enzo whines, sensing the sit in Val's energy from joy to something darker, more dangerous he runs out the door looking for safety. Val pulls out his phone, his hand trembling slightly as he dials Marco-his voice is ice. Tell me she’s at her place, tell me something. She hears the clank and runs in from the balcony and says what happened are you okay Val? Talk to me?? Zora looks him over for cuts like a lioness looks after a cub fierce yet comforting. Val’s head snaps toward the balcony door. For a moment-just a fraction of a second-relief floods his face before he catches himself, forcing his expression neutral. You were outside… I thought..He steps over the broke ceramic, his breathing still ragged. The pone is still in his hand, forgotten. He doesn’t finish. He crosses to her instead, hands finding her shoulders, checking her over the same way she’s checking him-searching for damage that isn’t there. The cups … I dropped them. His voice is steadier now, but his grip on her shoulders remains tight, possessive. Don’t do that again… Disappear without telling me where you're going. Enzo paces between them, still sensing the adrenaline spike trig to calm it down by rubbing himself on their legs. Zora looks up at him through her eyelashes. Honey I was in the house… the things were packed because we’re leaving see them by the door? I can’t tell you every time I leave a room… you have to trust me, trust I meant what I said, that I’m not going anywhere and that I’m safe. She says in all honesty as Val’s hands drop from her shoulders. He looks past her toward the foyer-the luggage lined up like shoulders awaiting orders. Reality crashes back in, replacing panic with something rawer; shame.

He runs a had through his hair, jaw clenching as he says You’re right. I know you’re right, it’s just after 3 months of watching you from the shadows, then on night in my bed and I’m just afraid I guess that it was just a dream or that you where running thinking I’m nuts..His voice is rough, vulnerable in a way that doesn’t suit him. He turns back to her, his dark eyes carrying the weight of old fears-the kind that come from losing control. I’m sorry I’m acting like you’ll vanish if I blink and that wasn’t fair. Enzo settles, sensing the storm has passed. You packed? Good, good, We need to move head out if we want to catch the helicopter. She steps forward with her brow furrowed..No we’re more important right now remember no running that means from our emotions as well. I now it’s gonna take time for you to trust someone fully and to let go of the trauma but I will be here to support you while you do. You know I hate mornings but when I saw you this morning your electricity and excitement was shining through every pore and it was contagious, I wanted to show you I was in this but I ended up scaring you.. I’m sorry for that. Let’s clean up this mess and get some more coffee before I kill you…

She winks Val stares at her for a long moment, the weight of her words settling into the spaces between them. His shoulders drop slightly-the tension bleeding out. You’re right. No running. He moves to the balcony door she’d just come through, looking out at the city awakening below. When he turns back, there’s something softer I his expression. I saw you standing there this morning and thought...I don’t know what I thought. That you’d changed your mind maybe. That this was too much. He kneels to gather the ceramic shards and Zora can see his hands are steady now as he says. More coffee sounds perfect and tesoro? Your electricity is contagious too. Don’t apologize for being happy just because I got scared. He says with sincerity as Enzo follows them both toward the kitchen, where Antonella pretends she didn’t hear any of it, like the professional she is. She hand them two coffees, one espresso dark and on hazelnut late as well as the bag of breakfast items for the road.

She says Here’s breakfast please eat don’t forget about it and I’ll be there by tomorrow morning I will have my things packed and be on the net flight in the morning. Val takes the espresso from Antonella's hands, their fingers brushing briefly in a gesture of trust. He wraps his other hand around the bag as Zora take her latte, the warmth grounding both of them as Zora says Thank you for everything I look forward to getting to know you at the estate please have people help you pack and don’t lift anything heavy we don’t’ want you hurt before we even arrive. He nods to Antonella, understanding the weight of what Zora just said and how much it will mean to her. He appreciates what Antonella is doing leaving the penthouse the life she’s but here, to start fresh at the estate. And he says tomorrow then the cabin on the estate, will be ready for you, Whatever you need, it’s yours. Enzo trots alongside them toward the elevator, ready to get outside sensing the shift toward departure he gets excited. Val

says we should get going, as he glanced at Zora over his coffee, his earlier panic now transformed into something steadier-a man choosing to trust, one moment at a time. Zora nods and replies Ok then let’s go get the packing done at my place and head over shouldn’t take more than an hour or so since you have people doing the most of it for us I just need to gram the important stuff and give directions.

Val looks deeply into her eyes and the stops her from turning around, and he grabs her, pulls her in for a hug, then says Thank you for not allowing me to hide my emotions I know its going to be hard for awhile to learn how to do this and I might get frustrated and angry sometimes but I want you to know that I am listening and appreciate it and you… I already love you so much Zora. He then leads her towards the door content as she turns around and just kisses him gently on the cheek nothing else needs to be said.

She then gins, turns around and looks up the stairs and then back at him over her shoulder and says, Ok then give me the tour for you have worked so hard wouldn’t want to see all that work go to waste. Val’s laugh is low, genuine-she’s calling his bluff and he loves it. He moves toward the staircase, gesturing for her to continue, as he reaches out for her outstretched hand and he continues. A trap with weeping willows and your favorite coffee waiting in the kitchen? I’m wounded… Master suit first, then the library-I had them stock it with everything on addiction recovery and farm management. The offices overlook the south pasture, and the guest house where Antonella will stay. You could call them , today tell them yu need two weeks, maybe a month. We can see how the estate feels. How we feel together outside the penthouse, outside the city noise. Then you decide if you go back to that job, or we build something else. Together No pressure, just space to breathe and figure it out. The car ride to Zora’s place is quieter that the drive downtown had been. Val sits in the back beside her, the thermal bag resting between them, his hand finding hers as the city blurs past. Va states looking at his watch The movers should already be there. Marco sent them over an hour ago. To get started on the bigger stuff they weren’t going to pack anything without instructions. He squeezes her fingers gently, testing the waters of trust-no suffocation, just presence. There’s warmth in his voice as he says Your electrical harem drawer is still packed by you, yeah? Nothing else matters if we forget that. His earlier panic is replaced by something almost playful mentioning the drawer with a smile. Enzo’s head rests on her lap as the car pulls up to her modest home. Three moving truck line the street. Workers carry boxes with efficient precision into the house-Marco’s doing, clearly orchestrated down to the minute. Please be careful with the antiques Zora states as she walks up watc
