The call came on a Tuesday morning.

Emma was in Nick's kitchen, making coffee. She had been staying at his penthouse for four days now — not officially living there, but close enough. A drawer in his dresser. A toothbrush in his bathroom. A pair of her shoes by the door.

Nick was still in bed. He had started sleeping later now that he didn't have to be at the office by 8:00 AM sharp. Dr. Chen had suggested it. Emma had encouraged it.

He was changing.

Slowly. Imperfectly. But changing.

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Wedding Day

Emma did not sleep. She lay in bed beside Nick, staring at the ceiling, the photograph burning in her memory. She had hidden the envelope in her suitcase, buried under clothes she wouldn't need until the honeymoon. Nick didn't know. No one knew except Rachel. After the wedding, she told herself. After tomorrow. But tomorrow was here. The sun rose over the city, painting the penthouse in shades of gold and pink. Nick was still asleep beside her, his arm draped across her waist, his breathing slow and steady. Emma watched him for a long moment — the scar on his jaw, the dark lashes against his pale skin, the peace on his face that she had never seen before. He's happy, she thought. I can't ruin this. She slipped out of bed and walked to the bathroom. The woman in the mirror looked tired. Dark circles under her eyes. A slight tremor in her hands. Emma splashed cold water on her face and took a deep breath. You're just nervous, she told herself. Everyone is nervous on their wedding day.S

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The First Letter

The rehearsal dinner was supposed to be perfect. That was Eleanor's word. Perfect. She had repeated it so many times that Emma had started to believe her. The venue was a small garden restaurant on the edge of the city, with string lights and flowers and tables covered in white linen. The guest list had been trimmed, polished, approved. The food had been tasted, retasted, approved again. The seating chart had been rearranged seventeen times.Eleanor stood at the entrance, greeting guests, her silver hair swept up in an elegant twist, her black dress immaculate. She looked like a queen surveying her kingdom."Emma," Eleanor said, kissing her cheek. "You look beautiful."Emma smoothed the front of her dress — a simple white sheath, not her wedding gown, but something special for tonight. "Thank you. You look beautiful too.""I always look beautiful." Eleanor's eyes softened. "Are you nervous?""Terrified.""Good. That means you care."Emma smiled. Eleanor took her arm and led her into t

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Week Before

The wedding was seven days away.Emma woke to sunlight streaming through the penthouse windows, the city glittering below, Nick's arm draped across her waist. She lay still for a moment, listening to him breathe, watching the dust motes dance in the air.Seven days. Her heart pounded.Nick's eyes opened. "You're thinking too loud.""I'm not thinking.""You're always thinking." He pulled her closer. "What's wrong?""Nothing's wrong.""Emma."She turned to face him. The scar on his jaw. The sleep in his eyes. The man she was going to marry."What if something goes wrong?" she whispered."Like what?""Like the flowers don't arrive. Like it rains. Like I trip walking down the aisle."Nick smiled. "Then we buy new flowers. We buy umbrellas. You trip and I catch you."Emma's throat tightened. "What if I forget my vows?""You won't.""What if you forget yours?"Nick kissed her forehead. "Then I'll make new ones. Right there. In front of everyone."Emma laughed — a wet, shaky laugh. "You're n

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Bachelorette Party

Emma did not want a bachelorette party. She had told Olivia this repeatedly. She had used words like "unnecessary" and "excessive" and "I'm not twenty-five anymore." Olivia had listened patiently, nodded sympathetically, and then ignored every word. "The party is Saturday," Olivia said. "Wear something cute. Don't argue." Emma argued anyway. She lost. --- Saturday arrived unseasonably warm. Emma stood in front of her closet, staring at her clothes. Nick was sitting on the bed, watching her. "You're nervous," Nick said. "I'm not nervous. I'm reluctant." "Same thing." Emma turned to face him. "What if no one comes?" "Everyone will come." "What if it's awkward?" "It won't be." "What if—" Nick stood up. He walked to her and took her hands. "Emma," he said. "You have spent your whole life taking care of other people. Tonight, let people take care of you." Emma's throat tightened. "I don't know how to do that." "Then learn." He kissed her forehead. "Go," he said. "Have f

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Bachelor Party

The planning started weeks in advance.Daniel took charge — something about being the best man, something about responsibilities, something about making sure Nick had one night of freedom before the wedding. Nick had protested. He didn't want a bachelor party. He didn't want to go to a club or a bar or anywhere with people he didn't know.Daniel had ignored him."You're having a bachelor party," Daniel said."I'm not.""You are. It's happening. Get over it."Nick looked at Emma. She was hiding her smile behind her hand."You're enjoying this," Nick said."Immensely.""Traitor."Emma kissed his cheek. "Go. Have fun. Be free.""I don't know how to be free.""Then learn."---The night arrived cold and clear.Daniel had planned something simple — dinner at a steakhouse, then drinks at a private lounge. No strippers. No wild parties. Just good food and good company.Nick wore a gray suit and the silver tie. He looked at himself in the mirror. You're getting married, he thought. In three w

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Dress Fitting

The appointment was set for Saturday at 10:00 AM.Not at the boutique where Eleanor had taken Emma for Olivia's wedding — that was for bridesmaids. This was for brides. This was the appointment Emma had been dreaming about since she was a little girl, even if she had forgotten that she had been dreaming. The salon was called Ever After — all white walls and crystal chandeliers and dresses that looked like clouds. Emma walked through the front door and felt like she had stepped into a fairy tale.Olivia was already there, sitting on a velvet couch, holding a glass of champagne. Chloe was beside her, wearing a bright yellow dress and an even brighter smile. Eleanor sat in a chair by the window, her posture perfect, her expression critical."You're late," Eleanor said."The traffic was bad.""You should have left earlier."Emma kissed her cheek. "Good morning to you too."Eleanor almost smiled. "Good morning, Emma."---The consultant's name was Grace. She was small and elegant, with sil
