LOGINI stared at her, heart pounding so hard I could barely hear myself.
“Know what?” I whispered. “Serena? She moved out a couple of months ago,” she said. My fingers locked around my bag like it was the only solid thing left. Thoughts crashed into each other so fast I couldn’t catch any of them. “Do you have her number?” The words came out shaky. “Please… it’s an emergency.” I stared at her, she hesitated, then scribbled something on a scrap of paper and pushed it toward me. I immediately grabbed it like a lifeline as different thoughts raced through my mind. What if the number was dead? What if Serena didn’t want anything to do with me after all these years…after Leo called her filth and banned her from speaking to me? I folded the paper carefully and shoved it into my bag. I had only taken a few steps when the first drop hit my arm. The sky had been cloudy for a while. I just hadn’t noticed. All I could think about is Serena. The drops kept coming.. I didn’t care. I pulled out my phone. Oh God. Battery almost gone. My heart kicked harder. I couldn’t let it die before I called her. I walked faster, almost running, but the rain turned heavier, soaking straight through my clothes, making the pavement slick under my feet. I hugged my bag against my chest and tried to cross the road. My knees felt watery. I hadn’t eaten properly in days… since I saw Leo with her…my eyes grew watery. What did I do to deserve this? Everything in me is just… tired. All I want now is somewhere quiet to sit and think for few minutes. I checked the phone again, this time, the screen flickered. Five percent. “Please,” I whispered. “Just wait till I call Serena.” I stepped off the curb, my legs slippery and cold. I heard the screech of car tire. Turning….my heart pounded… Pain tore through me as my phone flew out of my hand. I hit the wet ground and pain torn through me.. For a second there was nothing but rain, before I heard whispers of voices… “She is bleeding..” I heard someone say before everything went black. Beep. Beep. Beep. I tried to move and a low groan slipped out. Pain was everywhere…deep, stubborn, sitting in my bones. The room was too quiet. I opened my eyes and the hospital lights stabbed straight into my skull. My whole body feels heavy and wrong. When I tried to shift, everything protested at once. “You shouldn’t…” a voice said quietly. My vision focused little by little. A doctor stood beside the bed, checking my vitals and movements and writing them down. “What happened?” I managed. He looked at me and gave a small smile. “You were in an accident.” “Accident?” “Yes, Essie. Your husband just left.” “My husband?” The word felt wrong in my mouth. Leo… came here? “Yes. He brought you in. He just left,” the doctor said. My mind scrambled backward. I left Leo’s house. I went looking for Serena. Then the car… Did he follow me? Was he the one who hit me and then carried me here? “Ma’am… congratulations.” I stared at him. Congratulations for what? For getting kicked out of my home, nearly killed, and dumped in a hospital bed? Then the next his mouth, and I sat up too fast, pain be damned. “What did you just say?” “You are pregnant. You were lucky….you didn’t hit your stomach.” A laugh burst out of me. “You must be mistaken. I can’t get pregnant.” My heart was slamming against my ribs. The air in the room felt too thick to breathe.. His voice faded from my head gradually, I couldn’t hear anything properly. Should I feel happy? Or sick? I stayed on the bed, eyes locked on the white wall, the word echoing over and over. Pregnant. After all the years of crying, injections, praying, watching every test come back empty… I was carrying a child. Leo’s child. The same thing he used to spit at me as proof I was worthless. A bitter sound escaped my throat and turned into quiet, ugly sobs. What am i going to do? A nurse came in later and pressed a small envelope into my hands. Cash. The man who claimed to be my husband had paid the bill and left this behind. It couldn’t have been Leo. But then who was he? All I had was a blur…strong arms lifting me off the wet road, the screech of tires, then nothing. “Thank you,” I whispered, clutching the envelope. It wasn’t much, but it would keep me going for a few days if I was careful. I reached into the only bag Leo had let me take and pulled out the crumpled paper. Serena’s number, I let out a deep breath when I saw I didn’t lose the paper. My hands shook as I dialed. What if the number had changed? What if she wanted nothing to do with me after all this silence? It rang once. Twice. “Hello?” Her voice…familiar. “Serena…” My voice cracked right open. “It’s me. Essie.” Silence. The phone rang while I was still staring at the cold eggs.Unknown number. I answered before I could stop myself.“Hello?”“Essie? This is Maxwell. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”I frowned at the wall. “Maxwell? Do I… know you?”“Not really. I’ve been trying to reach you for a while now. I just wanted to check how you are doing… and ask if you would be willing to meet. Today, if possible. Just to talk.”I took in a deep breath and there was a short silence on my end and glanced at Serena’s half-finished coffee still sitting on the counter.“Why?” I asked. “What’s this about?”I would rather explain in person. It’s nothing bad. I promise.”I hesitated, thumb pressing against the edge of the phone. Part of me wanted to hang up and the other part had been carrying that unknown number in my mind.“Fine,” I said finally. “Where?”He gave me the name of a cafe two streets over, I am not really familiar with this environment but I guess looking for this place wouldn't be too difficult. “Ok
The morning light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, soft and indifferent, as if the night before hadn’t left a bruise on everything. We sat at the small kitchen table, plates of toast and scrambled eggs between us, the coffee already cooling in our mugs. Serena pushed a piece of toast toward me with a small smile on her face.“You need to eat, Essie. Really eat. You’ve been running empty.” She reached across and squeezed my wrist. “And you need to start building again, not just surviving. Something of your own. A plan. Even if it’s small at first. I’ll help you look at options…jobs, whatever feels right. You’re not starting from nothing. You are starting from everything you’ve already survived.”I nodded, chewing slowly, the bread didn't have a taste. My mind wouldn’t stay on her words. It kept circling round divorce papers and the envelope still sitting on the counter where I had left it last night. I keep seeing Leo with that cool, final look in his eyes..the one that sai
Essie’s eyes burned as the words tore from her throat. “You… brought her here?”For one foolish, desperate second I had believed Leo had come for me. Instead he stood in Serena’s living room with Bella pressed against his side, and the old wound from yesterday ripped open all over again.Bella’s smile was pure poison. “You didn’t actually think he would come alone tonight, did you?” She stepped forward, a thin folder clutched in her manicured hand.Leo’s arm slid around Bella’s waist. He pulled her in, kissed her full on the mouth right there in front of me. I turned my face away, but the image was already in my head. My heart thumps. My baby…this tiny secret that I hadn’t told Leo about seemed to sense my panic and twist inside me.Serena moved like a shield, stepping between us. “You can step away now.” She said, her voice was ice. Serena ushered them toward the door, body blocking my view of the kiss that still lingered in the air.Leo ignored her completely. His gaze locked
The apartment felt smaller the moment the message left my phone. Like the walls had inhaled and forgotten how to breathe out again.Serena didn’t move. She just stared at the glowing screen in my hand as if it might still reverse itself, as if the words address now could be unsent by sheer force of will. “Essie.” Serena’s voice was low, careful, the way people speak when they’re trying not to startle someone. “You don’t have to open the door. You don’t owe him anything. Not the address. Not the baby. Not one more second of your life.”I pressed the heel of my hand against my stomach. Sincerely, the hope was still there, fluttering like something with broken wings that refused to die. I hated it how i felt but also needed it. Both feelings lived in the same tight space under my ribs and they were tearing each other apart.“I know,” I whispered. But knowing and doing were different countries, and right now I am sitting here quietly not knowing what I should do.My phone buzzed agai
The voice that came through the speaker made my knees go weak.“Essie.”Just my name. Low and rough..the farmiliarity in a way still cut deep.Leo.Serena’s eyes narrowed the second she saw my face. She mouthed, Who? but I couldn’t answer. I could barely breathe.“Leo…” The word slipped out before I could stop it.On the other end, there was a sharp exhale, like he had been holding his breath. “Where the hell are you? I’ve been calling the hospital. They said you left.”My free hand curled into a fist against my thigh. The same man who had shoved me out into the rain was now demanding answers.“I… I’m fine,” I managed. My voice sounded small even to my own ears.“Fine?” He let out a short, humorless laugh. “You were in an accident, Essie. The doctor called me. Said you were unconscious when they brought you in. And then you just… disappeared.”My stomach twisted and something about his words felt off.“You didn’t bring me to the hospital?” I asked slowly. “And left cash with me?”Ser
A sharp intake of breath cut through the line.“Essie? Oh my God, Essie! Where are you? Are you okay? You sound…”“I’m at the hospital,” I whispered, tears already streaming down my face. “Please… I need help.”Serena didn’t hesitate. “Stay right there. I’m coming to get you.”I sent her the address and Less than an hour later, her car pulled up outside the entrance. I stepped out into the light drizzle still wearing the same damp clothes from the night before. The second Serena saw me, she was out of the car and pulling me into a crushing embrace.“Essie, what happened to you?” Her voice was thick with worry.“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry,” I cried, the pain of the last few days pouring out of me without restraint.“Hey. It’s okay. Whatever it is…” She wiped my tears with her thumbs while still holding me tightly. “Where’s Leo? I will drive you home.”“No!” The word ripped out of me. My heart slammed against my ribs. “I can’t go back there.”Serena studied my face. She didn’t ask quest
