BUTTERCUP

I heard the door shut behind Draven and finally let myself fall apart.

Sobs tore out of my throat as I slid down the wall and my knees hitting the cold floor. “Why won’t you just let me go?” I whispered to the empty room. My body still ached from him, his scent still clung to my skin, but he had walked away again while I cried.

Minutes later, the door opened. I quickly wiped my face, expecting Draven, but it wasn’t him.

Seraphina walked in with three other women. All of which were ta

***FIVE MONTHS LATER LILA"She's doing it again." Lila said as Lyssa's hands opened, and soft light spilled between her fingers like water that had learned to glow. She's six months old, and already rewriting the room. "It's not random, Kai. She's aiming it at the window when the sun hits. You need to see this, not just hear about it later."Kai leaned over the crib. "I'm right here. And listen, the sound isn't the same note every time. She's changing it on purpose.""I know what my own daughter is doing."Lyssa made a low, clear tone. Mira, checking her from the side, kept her voice flat. "It is stronger than last week. Wolfs in the pack are asking why the air feels lighter when she passes by. That's becoming an attention we can't control."I picked Lyssa up, my hands not quite steady. The mark on my wrist answered with a pulse that felt more like warning than comfort. "I don't know how to teach this. I only know how to keep her from being taken. Everyone in this room wants an answ

BUTTERCUP ***AT THE MEETING ROOM "You placed a bounty on a one-month-old." The three Continuum Archive representatives sat across the outer hall table. They weren't granted an inner access, or a sight of Lyssa. "You sent a collector through our wards. Start with why you thought that was acceptable."The lead researcher, a thin man named Pell, spoke. "The infant's signature is unique. Triple-thread development has not been recorded in stable form in any living records. Mapping it could advance bond theory by decades. The bounty was acquisition for study, not harm. We regret the method caused alarm."Kai stood at my right, still wearing the cut from the attack. "Regret the method, not the goal. Say that again, slower, so I remember exactly how you phrased it before I decide what happens next."A woman beside Pell, leaned forward. "Knowledge has always required subjects. None of that progress happened because researchers asked permission of every powerful interest first. We are contin

BUTTERCUP ***I stood over the map of the mansion and the ridge. "Lyssa does not leave the inner wards without two of us and a full check up. Visitors will be stopped at the outer hall. The research language of any kind gets logged and refused unless I sign it myself."Lila clutched Lyssa tighter than usual. "She is a month old." Lila's voice broke. "And you are already building a cage for her."Kai clenched his jaw. "A cage that keeps her breathing." He stepped forward. "I hate it too. I hate the other option more. Do you understand that? Do you understand what happens if we don't?"Draven slammed a hand on the map, over the corridor where the attacker had come through. "We'll reinforce that line today." His eyes cut toward Lila, unapologetic. "You want to argue about the tactics, argue with them after she's safe."Asher set a short list on the table. "The three names the attacker gave trace to a coalition that calls itself the Continuum Archive. They collect rare developmental sign

DRAVEN OUTSIDE THE MANSION *** "Move," I snarled as the outer ward line screamed in my head. "Go to the inner room. Now! Someone just crossed the second area with bad intentions." Kai was already on his feet, his blades were half-drawn. "Direction?" "The east corridor." I said. Buttercup's face drained of color. "Lyssa..." Her voice cracked on the name. Asher spoke. "The signature is wrong. They came prepared for her. This wasn't improvised." We hit the inner hall at a run. Lila was on her feet despite her healing body, Lyssa clutched against her chest, guardian mark already flaring bright enough to throw shadows against the walls. The baby let out a high, sharp musical note that cut the air. "Stay behind me," I told Lila, my voice leaving no room for an argument. "Do not put her down." The attacker came through the side door in a blur of dark cloth and dampening wards, not a full assault team, one attacker, the kind of professional who expected the household to be exhausted

ASHER *** "I need to go to the temple again." I stood as the morning sunlight started to rise. "I'll return before the midday checks." Buttercup's eyes narrowed on my face, sharp with something close to suspicion. "Any other thing you're not telling us about. Go, then. But don't come back with more questions than answers this time." Kai didn't look up from the new corps documents. "Bring back less riddles than last time. I mean it, Asher. We can't keep running the pack on your riddles." Draven nodded. "The outer line is quiet. Take the hours. But if this is about her..." He stopped himself, glancing toward the inner room. "Just come back with something we can use." Lila spoke. "Come back present. Not hollowed out like a ghost wearing your face. Lyssa notices when any of us go thin, and I will not have her first memories built on our secrets." The words followed me out, as I left while the ridge still held its morning blue, and I could feel Lila's stare long after the mansion had

KAI *** AT THE MANSION "They still call me the rogue in the room," I said, dropping the latest Council briefing on the table hard enough to make it slap. "It does not matter that I have spent months running across borders. Someone always drags up the years I spent outside the pack like I never left them behind." Buttercup did not even look up right away, her eyes still fixed on the representative list. "Then stop complaining and make the record louder than the nickname. You already do the work. Now they need to see the name attached to results, or this conversation is pointless." Lila sat with Lyssa against her shoulder. "I am on limited movement and full mother duty, Kai. Someone has to take the outer meetings, and that someone is you. Stop waiting for permission you already earned. It is exhausting to watch." Draven nodded. "The pack trusts your read on people who smile while they stab you in the back. Use that. I will not pretend I can cover every political angle alone, and I

BUTTERCUP What the hell was I supposed to do now?I turned away from the cheering crowd, my legs were shaking as I did. Then a strong hand grabbed my wrist and pulled me hard. “Come with me, now.” Draven’s voice was low and rough in my ear. I didn’t fight with him, I couldn’t even if I wanted

BUTTERCUP I watched the door close behind Draven as he went to see Seraphina, and I felt my emotions finally snapping inside me. “Enough of this shit,” I muttered to myself, sliding off his bed. My legs still felt weak but I forced myself to move. I grabbed my dress from the floor and pulled i

BUTTERCUP I sat there on that damn couch, my legs still trembling and his words ringing in my ears. “I’m sorry, little one.” The door had barely closed behind Draven before I jumped up. My dress was wrinkled, my thighs sticky, and my chest felt like someone had punched a hole right through it.
