The howl hadn’t just stirred something in Evangeline, it had awakened her.

For the past two nights, sleep had become a stranger. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw a dark forest lit by fire. Every time she breathed in, the air tasted of ash and blood. Her heart beat faster than it should have, her senses too sharp, her reflection unfamiliar - as if something ancient had begun to shift inside her bones, cracking open a door she hadn’t realized was locked.

Emma had noticed the change immediately. When she arrived at Evangeline’s apartment, the lights were off, the windows wide open despite the cold, and the air practically hummed with static. Evangeline was standing barefoot in the center of the living room, eyes glazed, hands twitching in slow, circular patterns in the air - like she was drawing sigils she didn’t remember learning.

“Evangeline?” Emma’s voice broke the trance, but only barely.

“I think the quads are in trouble,” Evangeline whispered, without turning.

Her voice wa

The Veil shimmered like torn glass dipped in bloodlight. It wasn’t a doorway. It was a fracture. And it pulsed. Each beat sent tremors through the Hollow Refuge, shaking dust from the ceiling and rippling cracks through the bone-forged floor. The chains still dangling from the rafters began to twitch, like dead things stirred by memory.Evangeline stood at the edge of the tear, windless and weightless, the satchel empty at her hip.The Heart of Dracula now hovered above Virex’s hand, suspended in a cocoon of violet spellfire. It rotated slowly, dripping motes of blood-magic like falling stars.“Is this stable?” Thorne asked, eyes narrowed. “Doesn’t look stable.”“It’s not,” Virex replied calmly. “The Veil is a wound. The more you press, the more it bleeds.”Silas muttered a curse and paced backward, glaring at the rift.“That thing’s not a gate. That’s a trap dressed as a miracle.”“It’s both,” Emma said, sigils already forming across her forearms. “But there’s no other way.”Rhea cro

They reached the Hollow Refuge just after nightfall. No wind stirred. No stars showed. The forest felt trapped in a breath that would never exhale. Branches arched above them like ribcages. The moss underfoot was dark and wet, pulsing faintly with heartbeat rhythms that didn’t belong to any of them.“Feels like the trees are listening.” Silas muttered, with a curse. “They are,” Marrow said. “This place doesn’t forget.”The forest gave way to a cliffside, cracked open by something ancient. A stone maw yawned wide beneath it, half-buried in roots, sealed by a rusted gate etched in bone-white sigils.Evangeline stepped forward, rune-light glowing from her fingertips but she didn’t touch the gate. “We carry the Heart.” She whispered. The sigils flared, then vanished like smoke and the gate peeled open without a sound. They descended in silence, weapons drawn, the air growing colder with each step. The walls were carved with old songs—lycan runes tangled with vampire chords, musical nota

Two days later,They reached the castle by dusk.It wasn’t marked on any map. It didn’t need to be. Dracula’s fortress rose like a shadow from the cliffs, black stone bleeding into the clouds, its crooked spires clawing at the red sky like they were trying to scratch open the heavens themselves. The wind howled through the jagged parapets in unnatural tones, the sound closer to whispering than weather — as if the castle itself was breathing. Waiting. The gate had no guards. Just two massive doors of rotted wood and iron bones, sealed with a crimson wax emblem - the Sigil of Vlad, cracked with age but still pulsing faintly with latent blood magic.“This feels like a trap.” Rhea unsheathed her blade. “Because it is,” said Emma. “Everything about this place is.”The wax burned away as Evangeline stepped forward. Her presence with the key made the sigil flinch, the air around her vibrating with quiet tension.Inside, the castle was colder than winter.Pillars of onyx lined the grand ent

An hour later,No one spoke when the last flame at Crypthollow guttered out.The battlefield had gone quiet, the blood dried into the dirt, the Veil’s twisted vines burned to ash. Yet what remained wasn’t peace - it was the silence before the next war cry. The calm before something worse. They had only just survived but - Cassius, Lucien, Selene, and Xander - the four Alpha Lycans had been taken. No clan had ever lost an Alpha without the entire pack falling, and yet here they stood - the four Betas left behind - bound by oaths to protect, now forced to face the unthinkable: a rescue mission across the Veil.Evangeline stood between them with her hands laced behind her back, her silver-streaked eyes scanning each face in the circle. Her mask was gone. There was no time for pretense.Only power.“This won’t work unless we’re honest,” she said, voice firm. “I know you don’t like each other, you don’t trust me, but we need each other to bring them home.”The first to step forward was Tho

The silver masks clung to their faces like second skin - not just to hide their identities, but to shield them from the creeping madness that hung over the ruins like a curse. Forged from moon-drenched metal and etched with protective runes Evangeline had carved herself, the masks pulsed faintly with enchantments designed to repel the Veil’s influence. Even so, with every step they took deeper into the desecrated remnants of the lycan sanctuary, the weight of the air grew heavier, denser — like they were walking through a memory that refused to die.Evangeline’s breath fogged the inside of her mask, her footsteps muffled by the ash-slick ground. Emma moved beside her in silence, her fingers twitching around a blade dipped in wolfsbane and ashroot. Cassius said no weapons worked on the Veil-born creatures — but the sisters weren't taking any chances. The ruins spread out like a battlefield frozen mid-slaughter. Cracked stone arches rose and fell across what had once been a sacred war
