Chapter Thirty

The bonfire sparked an ambience that radiated warmth and encouraged relaxation. It almost felt as if we were not on school grounds because of the unsupervised nature of the setting. I assumed it was only because Juniors and Seniors were allowed to attend but then again there wasn't any supervision during our post-full moon gatherings.

Lizzy spoke to the Mermaids in a language I could not identify. Their heads snapped in my direction. Their attention was a heavy load to bare. There was no other option but faster fluttering for the rhythm of my heart. My throat stiffened and dried. My words were entangled under my tongue. It felt as if my voice had departed but I was just taken back by the Mermaids and their mystical presence. Overwhelmed with fascination, I gulped my nerves away from surfacing onto my face.

I added some warmth to my demeanor by extending my lips into a friendly smile.
