Chapter 1

One year later.

I woke up to consistent knocking on my window, and I groaned awake, blinking a few times to understand what was going on. I rolled my eyes when I saw Nancy crouched in front of the window before getting out of bed with a yawn and fully stretching.

I opened my bedroom window for her to come in, she was carrying a small plastic bag, and had a wide grin on her face. "Nancy, you know I'm grounded, how on earth? Shouldn't you be doing laundry? It's Fiona's eighteenth birthday tomorrow, you know Alpha will want all those curtains sparkling clean." She'd been demoted to a laundry woman after losing her job as a server since the incident with Fiona.

"Yeah grounded because you fell asleep while working your ass off, those people are bitches, it's your birthday tomorrow," she brought bread out of the plastic bag, "so I got this for you, and I'm taking you shopping so you get to choose something you really want."

"Nancy," I couldn't help but smile at her, "you didn't have to," I brought my lower lip in a small pout before wrapping my arms around her in a hug, "you're just the sweetest."

"I know," she flipped her jet black hair over her shoulder, "yeah now let's hurry out of here before someone finds out you're gone."

"I haven't even washed my mouth yet, girl..." She gave me no chance to create an excuse, tugging my hand and pulling me forward and out of my room. I was in my worn out pajamas and my hair was in a messy bun that I tried to straighten out with my palm.

"You're going to get me killed." I said in a loud whisper as I wandered through the streets. It was sunny out and since the pack was closely interrelated, most things were werewolf exclusive.

"Who cares if they find out? At least you would have had your fun and..." She stopped talking, sniffing the surrounding air.

"What?" I furrowed my eyebrows at her.

"Do you smell that?" She sniffed the air around us and I tried to pick up anything strange or different, scrunching my nose but I shook my head at her.

"No, why... Where are you going?" I asked when she left my side.

"I'll be back!" She called and disappeared before I could even say anything.

"Great, you bring me out here against my will and abandon me, just great." I folded my arms across my chest, my heart was beating fast for being all alone by myself. What if my uncle had not touched that I was gone by now?

It felt like forever, but she returned, "what was that about?" I asked her.

"I felt my mate." She sighed.

"Oh," I felt a pain sting my heart. I didn't want to be jealous of her, but I still didn't get my mate and now my friend could feel hers, "um, that's great." I tried to feign excitement, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

"An Omega?" A deep male voice called from behind us. We both spun on our heels simultaneously to look at him. He was standing sharply behind us, his eyes widened as he fixed his gaze on her. I watched as Nancy's lips spread into a big smile when she met his gaze.

"Mate." She called.

"No," he shook his head fast, "no way an omega is my mate," his words wiped the smile off my friend's face.

"Excuse me?" I glared at him, eyeing his ugly ass from head to toe. This ugly bitch was bald and had the widest face I'd ever seen. He was lucky to even have a beauty like her as a mate.

"I, Koan Mateo, reject you as my mate." He looked terrified of the fact that he was paired with her. He didn't say more, just resumed walking like nothing strange had happened.

Nancy lost her balance and fell to the floor, I had to crouch low to help her up, "Nancy!"

Her face crumpled. It’s not easy to go through rejection. She moaned in a most heartbreaking sound and collapsed on the floor. Nancy rolled on the floor in pain but still extended her hand try to reach out to her mate.

Before I can go and help her to get up, the ugly man kick Nancy aside and say, "You don't even deserve to touch me, omega.”

“How could you say that? Don't you look at yourself in the mirror? Nancy looks a million times better than you.You are so damn lucky to have her as mate.   How dare you reject her?”

“Look who is talking? You are just slaves.Omegas can only be used for casual sexual pleasure, not wives.” The man said, “People like you should never get mate.”

I was about to say something more to rebut him when I heard Nancy calling me.

"He rejected me..." She said in disbelief and pain.

"He's a fucking asshole, Nancy, don't let it get to you." I swallowed, she looked so miserable, it worried me so much.

"I thought mates were supposed to bring us happiness, I-" she buried her face in her arms, crying profusely.

"Nancy, people are watching," I whispered, noticing the eyes that followed us. "Nancy, let's go to your place, we can talk about this better." I tried to convince her the best way I could."

She wouldn't move from where she was and that when I saw Fiona and her friends on the other side of the road, they'd been watching us the entire time. "Ugh great now I'm in trouble," I groaned but I'd deal with that later, right now Nancy was my priority.

Fiona crossed the streets and came to our side, "aww, poor omega , no one wants to be your mate." She smirked at us. How could she even say something like that, knowing how grieved she was right now.

"Shut up Fiona," I frowned, "the only reason people pretend to like you is because of your rank, trust me, you're so ugly if you lost your rank today, even an omega wouldn't want to be with you." I said the words out of anger before I could take them back.

Fiona was shocked, her jaw dropped open. Before she would regain her senses to retaliate, I hurried to pull Nancy out of sight.

"Nancy it's alright, you need to stop crying." I knew how much it hurt werewolves to be rejected but I needed her to be okay.

"But it's not!" She said, choked with tears. Her eyes were swollen and reddened at this point. “Shelia, what is the meaning of living for people like us?“

“There be always meaning, Nancy, don’t think of this, you should take a rest.”

I decided it would be best not to trigger her further and just followed silently until we got to the small shed she called her home.

It was small and only had one room in it. I set her on the bed and sighed, "you need sedatives that will help you sleep, I'll be back with them, okay? Nancy, no matter what, I'm here for you, doesn't matter what your mate thinks?" My heart stung seeing my friend like this.

She only nodded and laid on the bed.

"I'll be back," I assured her, and then took my leave.

I ran as fast as I could to the pharmacy. I was very worried about Nancy's condition, she has always been a strong person, I have not seen her so vulnerable.

When I got to the pharmacy, I shouted, hurry up, give me the most expensive painkillers. The owner glanced at me, went into the depths of the pharmacy, and after a while, brought over the medication, “This is $8.50…”

“Keep the change!”

I dropped $10, took the medicine and quickly ran to Nancy's house.

$10 needed me save for one month, but Nancy was my best friend, not only a friend to me, but the only hope of my life.

When I open her door, I shouted, “I am back, Nancy, are you feel better?” But I got no replied.

I froze.

I saw that there was a white wolf lying on the ground, a deep laceration from her neck to her abdomen, and blood all over the floor. Her paws were hooked with intestines and left all over the floor.

I instantly understood what was going on.

“Nancy! ”I screamed and ran to her.
