Chapter 46

Harper

I spent Tuesday morning at the small café near Grace’s pediatrician’s office, waiting for Damian to finish a call before her scheduled checkup, watching leaves drift lazily past the window in shades of amber and rust. Grace sat contentedly in her stroller beside me, gnawing thoughtfully on a teething ring, entirely unbothered by the world around her.

“Harper?”

The voice came from behind me, uncertain and familiar in a way that made my stomach tighten before I’d even turned around.

I knew that voice. I hadn’t heard it in years, not since long before Damian, before the scandal, before any of the life I’d built since then. Turning slowly, I found myself facing someone I genuinely never expected to see again.

“Daniel?”

My father’s brother stood there, older than I remembered, gray threading heavily through hair that had once been dark, expression carrying the particular uncertainty of someone unsure whether they’d be welcomed or turned away entirely.

“I wasn’t sure it was you,” he said. “You look so much like your mother now.”

“What are you doing here?”

The question came out sharper than I intended, years of complicated family history compressing into those four simple words. Daniel had disappeared from our lives shortly after my father’s death, some falling out with my mother that she’d never fully explained, leaving behind only vague, bitter references whenever his name accidentally surfaced.

“I live nearby, actually. Have for a few years now.” He glanced toward Grace, something soft and uncertain crossing his expression. “Is this your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“She’s beautiful.”

The silence between us stretched, awkward and heavy with unspoken history neither of us seemed prepared to address directly. I studied him carefully, searching for whatever explanation might justify years of complete absence, years of my mother’s quiet bitterness whenever his name arose.

“Harper, I know I have no right asking this,” Daniel said finally, “but I’ve been hoping to run into you. There’s something about your father I think you deserve to know. Something your mother never told you.”

Something cold settled immediately in my stomach. “What kind of something?”

“Not here,” he said, glancing around the crowded café with obvious discomfort. “It’s complicated. It involves the Blackwoods, actually. More than you probably realize.”

The mention of Damian’s family name landed like a physical blow, confusion and dread tangling together instantly.

“What does my father have to do with the Blackwoods?”

Daniel hesitated, clearly wrestling with exactly how much to reveal in such a public setting. “Your father didn’t die in an accident, Harper. Not the way your mother always told you.”

The words landed heavy and disorienting, years of carefully constructed family history suddenly cracking beneath unexpected weight.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the fact that Richard Blackwood knew your father personally,” Daniel said quietly. “Years before any of this, before your mother’s relationship with the family that supposedly ruined her life. There’s history here nobody’s ever told you, Harper. History I think you deserve to finally understand.”

My hands trembled slightly against Grace’s stroller, the ordinary café suddenly feeling entirely too loud, entirely too bright, the comfortable rhythm of my morning shattered completely by revelations I hadn’t remotely anticipated.

“I need to go,” I said, though my feet remained rooted in place, questions crowding urgently despite my instinct to simply leave.

“Harper, please. Just give me a chance to explain properly. Not here, but somewhere private. This matters. I promise you it matters.”

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed with a text from Damian, letting me know he’d finished his call and was heading toward the pediatrician’s office.

I looked back at Daniel, uncertainty and fear tangling uncomfortably behind years of carefully built trust suddenly feeling unsteady beneath entirely new information.

“I have somewhere to be,” I said finally, gathering Grace’s stroller with hands that weren’t entirely steady. “But give me your number. I’ll call you.”

Daniel nodded, scribbling his information onto a napkin with visible relief. “Please do, Harper. This isn’t something that should stay buried any longer. Not now that you’re actually part of that family.”

I left the café moments later, questions crowding urgently through my mind, the napkin folded carefully into my pocket like something simultaneously precious and dangerous.

By the time I reached the pediatrician’s office, Damian was already waiting, Grace’s earlier appointment details forgotten entirely beneath the weight of what I’d just learned.

“You look pale,” Damian said immediately, concern replacing his earlier casual greeting. “Everything okay?”

I studied him carefully, searching his familiar, trusted expression for any hint of the secrets Daniel had just suggested existed somewhere beneath our carefully built life together.

“Harper?”

“I ran into someone,” I said slowly. “Someone from my past. He said something about my father. About Richard.”

Damian’s expression shifted immediately, something guarded and unreadable flickering behind his eyes.

“What did he say?”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed again, this time with a message from an unknown number.

Don’t trust Damian with what I told you. He already knows more than he’s ever admitted.

I stared at the screen, ice settling deep and immediate through my chest, glancing up slowly toward Damian, uncertainty suddenly coloring every careful, patient thing we’d built together over the past several years.

“Damian,” I said quietly, voice barely steady. “What exactly did you know about my father?”

Chapter 59 Harper My pulse spiked, though I forced my expression to remain neutral, forced my hands to stay steady around the coffee cup in front of me. “Don’t turn around,” Detective Ruiz’s voice continued through the earpiece, low and controlled. “Keep talking to Renata. We’re repositioning now.” Renata, watching my face carefully, seemed to sense something shifting despite my attempt at composure. “Harper?” “Just keep talking,” I murmured, barely moving my lips. “Ask me about the marina documents. Anything ordinary.” She nodded slightly, launching into careful, rehearsed conversation about the investigation’s supposed next steps, though her voice carried a thin thread of tension beneath the practiced calm. “Two tables behind you,” Detective Ruiz continued quietly. “Gray jacket, baseball cap. Not alone, like I said — there’s a second man near the door, positioned like he’s watching the exits.” I fought the urge to glance backward, focusing instead on Renata’s face, on the st

Chapter 58 Harper “What kind of plan?” I asked, gripping the phone tighter. “I’d rather explain in person,” Detective Ruiz said. “But Harper, I want to be honest with you upfront. It involves you being visible, briefly, somewhere Marcus expects you to be. We’d have full protection in place, officers stationed at every angle. But I won’t pretend there’s zero risk.” My stomach tightened immediately. “You want to use me as bait.” “I want to use the appearance of an opportunity,” Detective Ruiz corrected carefully. “Marcus has been operating in shadows for over a decade specifically because he’s never had to expose himself directly. Give him a target he believes is unprotected, and he becomes considerably easier to catch.” Damian, listening on speaker beside me, shook his head immediately. “Absolutely not. I’m not letting Harper walk into a scenario designed specifically to lure out a man who’s already assaulted one person and threatened our children.” “Damian—” I started. “No,” h

Now.”I didn’t ask questions. I ran down the hallway, heart pounding violently against my ribs, bursting into Lily’s room to find her sitting up in bed, already awake, eyes wide with confused alarm.“Mom? What’s happening?”“We need to move, baby. Right now.” I pulled her from bed, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders as security guards flooded the hallway, weapons drawn, voices low and urgent as they coordinated a sweep of the entire property.“He’s not inside,” one of the guards confirmed within minutes, voice tight with controlled urgency. “The signal came from outside the perimeter. We’re checking the monitor’s frequency now — someone hacked into the baby monitor’s wireless signal remotely.”“Remotely,” Damian repeated, disbelief and fur

Harper“Alone” was not going to happen. I showed Damian the message, and his jaw set immediately.“Absolutely not,” he said. “That’s exactly the kind of message someone sends when they want to isolate a target.”“It’s from Richard’s number.”“Numbers can be spoofed, Harper. Or Richard could be compromised somehow, forced to send it.” He was already dialing Detective Ruiz. “We’re not doing this without police involved. Not after everything that’s happened.”Detective Ruiz answered immediately, and within minutes, a plan had formed — officers would meet us near the marina, staying out of sight but close enough to respond instantly, while Damian and I approached together, refusing to split up despite whatever the message had requested. The drive out to the marina took nearly forty minutes, the abandoned property emerging gradually from behind overgrown brush and weathered fencing, exactly the kind of forgotten place that made sense for secrets to have festered for over two decades.“Ther

Chapter 55HarperVanessa stood in our living room when we came downstairs, flanked awkwardly by two security guards who clearly weren’t sure whether to treat her as a guest or a threat. She looked nothing like the polished, composed woman from the gala months earlier. Her hair was disheveled, mascara smudged beneath red-rimmed eyes, hands trembling slightly at her sides.“Harper. Damian.” Her voice cracked on both names. “I need to talk to you. Please.”“Give us a moment,” Damian said to the security guards, though his tone carried none of its usual authority, uncertainty coloring every word.Once they’d stepped back, giving us space without leaving the room entirely, Vanessa sank onto the edge of the couch, hands pressed against her face.“I didn’t do this,” she said before either of us could speak. “Whatever you’re thinking, whatever Renata told you, I didn’t hurt anyone.”“Renata’s your cousin,” I said carefully. “You knew about her investigation.”“I found out three days ago,” Va

We don’t know more than that yet.”Small mercy, though it did little to ease the dread sitting heavy in my chest as we walked into the station twenty minutes later. Detective Ruiz met us in the lobby, expression grave despite her usual composed professionalism.“Thank you for coming so quickly,” she said, guiding us toward a small conference room. “I want to be transparent with you both, given how directly this affects your investigation.”“What happened to him?” I asked.“Blunt force trauma. Someone struck him outside his home, left him for the neighbors to find. Whoever did this clearly wanted him silenced before he could speak with Renata Cole tom
