Chapter 49

Harper

The words landed like a physical weight. The story goes live within the hour.

I stood, moving toward the window, needing distance from everyone in that room even as my mind raced through everything I’d just learned. My father. Richard. Years of anger I’d carried, misdirected in ways I hadn’t even fully understood.

“Harper.” Damian’s voice was careful behind me. “Talk to me.”

“I don’t know what to say.” I kept my eyes on the darkened yard outside, the small sapling we’d planted together barely visible in the dim porch light. “Everything I believed about my father, about why my mother hated your family so much—it wasn’t wrong, exactly. Just incomplete. Smaller than what actually happened.”

“Harper—”

“I’m not finished.” I turned to face them, Richard standing near the fireplace, Daniel still seated with his phone clutched tightly, Damian closest to me, watching with careful, worried patience. “I spent my whole life believing my father’s death was some vague tragedy your family caused through generic wealthy cruelty. Instead it’s this. Specific. Personal. A business betrayal that spiraled into something that maybe, possibly, contributed to why he was drinking that night.”

“I understand if you need to hate me for that,” Richard said quietly. “I’ve hated myself for it long enough.”

“I don’t know what I feel yet,” I said honestly. “That’s the truth, Richard. I’m not going to pretend I’ve processed decades of buried history in the span of one conversation.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed again, and this time he didn’t reach for it immediately, glancing instead toward me with something apologetic. “Harper, I need to ask you something. Do you want me to try calling Thomas? Ask him to hold the story, just until you’ve had proper time?”

I considered the question carefully. Thomas Reyes had spent fifteen years building toward this exact moment, driven by grief and anger I understood completely, having carried something similar myself for most of my adult life.

“No,” I said finally. “Let it go out.”

Damian’s expression shifted with surprise. “Harper, are you sure? Once this becomes public, there’s no controlling the narrative anymore.”

“I’m sure,” I said, meeting Richard’s eyes directly. “You’ve spent decades controlling narratives, Richard. Burying uncomfortable truths behind money and silence. I think Thomas deserves this. I think my father deserves this. The actual truth, finally, regardless of how it affects Blackwood Industries’ reputation.”

Richard nodded slowly, something like relief mixing with obvious fear behind his controlled expression. “Then I should prepare my own statement. Get ahead of it properly, at least, rather than simply reacting.”

“Do that,” I said. “But Richard, I want to be clear about something. This isn’t forgiveness. Not yet. Maybe not for a long time. This is just me refusing to let you control this story the way you controlled everything else for decades.”

“I understand completely,” Richard said quietly. “I don’t expect forgiveness, Harper. I only hope, eventually, we can find something resembling peace.”

He left shortly after, already reaching for his phone to contact the company’s communications team, leaving Damian, Daniel, and me alone in the tense quiet of the living room.

“I should go too,” Daniel said eventually. “Give you two space to talk properly.”

“Thank you,” I told him. “For finding me. For telling me the truth, even though it complicated everything.”

“You deserved to know,” Daniel said simply. “Whatever comes next, I hope it brings you some kind of peace, eventually.”

Once he’d gone, Damian and I remained alone in the quiet living room, the weight of everything that had happened settling heavily between us.

“Are you angry with me?” Damian asked finally. “For not telling you sooner about what little I knew?”

I considered the question honestly, exhaustion making genuine reflection difficult, though I owed him something more than simple deflection. “I’m hurt,” I admitted. “Not necessarily angry, exactly. I understand why you hesitated, even if I wish you hadn’t.”

“I should have trusted you with it regardless.”

“Yes,” I agreed. “You should have. But I also understand fear of losing something precious enough to protect through silence instead of honesty. I understand that better than almost anyone, probably.”

Damian moved closer, careful and hesitant in a way that felt entirely unfamiliar between us after years of steady, comfortable certainty. “What do you need right now?”

I considered the question seriously, listening to the quiet house around us, Grace and Lily both peacefully asleep upstairs, unaware of the storm quietly unfolding beneath them.

“I need you to just be here,” I said finally. “Not fixing anything, not offering explanations. Just present, while I figure out how to feel about everything.”

He nodded, settling beside me on the couch, close enough that our shoulders touched, though he made no further attempt to close the distance beyond that simple contact.

We sat together in silence for a long while, the house quiet around us, my mind slowly working through years of carefully constructed anger now complicated by considerably messier truth.

My phone buzzed eventually, a notification from a news app I rarely used, headline flashing across the screen with stark, immediate clarity.

BLACKWOOD INDUSTRIES SCANDAL: Decades-Old Business Betrayal Linked to Businessman’s Death

I stared at the words, something strange and hollow settling through my chest, watching my father’s story finally become public after years of private, buried grief.

“It’s out,” I said quietly.

Damian reached for my hand, careful and steady despite everything happening around us. “Whatever happens next, Harper, we face it together. Exactly the way we’ve faced everything else.”

I nodded, though uncertainty lingered heavily beneath his reassurance, watching my phone continue buzzing with notifications as the story spread rapidly across every platform imaginable.

Then, unexpectedly, a new message appeared, this one from an unknown number entirely different from the one that had contacted me earlier that day.

Mrs. Blackwood, this is the reporter who broke the story. I have additional information about your father’s accident that Thomas Reyes chose not to include in his account. Information suggesting it wasn’t an accident at all. Call me when you’re ready to hear it.

Chapter 59 Harper My pulse spiked, though I forced my expression to remain neutral, forced my hands to stay steady around the coffee cup in front of me. “Don’t turn around,” Detective Ruiz’s voice continued through the earpiece, low and controlled. “Keep talking to Renata. We’re repositioning now.” Renata, watching my face carefully, seemed to sense something shifting despite my attempt at composure. “Harper?” “Just keep talking,” I murmured, barely moving my lips. “Ask me about the marina documents. Anything ordinary.” She nodded slightly, launching into careful, rehearsed conversation about the investigation’s supposed next steps, though her voice carried a thin thread of tension beneath the practiced calm. “Two tables behind you,” Detective Ruiz continued quietly. “Gray jacket, baseball cap. Not alone, like I said — there’s a second man near the door, positioned like he’s watching the exits.” I fought the urge to glance backward, focusing instead on Renata’s face, on the st

Chapter 58 Harper “What kind of plan?” I asked, gripping the phone tighter. “I’d rather explain in person,” Detective Ruiz said. “But Harper, I want to be honest with you upfront. It involves you being visible, briefly, somewhere Marcus expects you to be. We’d have full protection in place, officers stationed at every angle. But I won’t pretend there’s zero risk.” My stomach tightened immediately. “You want to use me as bait.” “I want to use the appearance of an opportunity,” Detective Ruiz corrected carefully. “Marcus has been operating in shadows for over a decade specifically because he’s never had to expose himself directly. Give him a target he believes is unprotected, and he becomes considerably easier to catch.” Damian, listening on speaker beside me, shook his head immediately. “Absolutely not. I’m not letting Harper walk into a scenario designed specifically to lure out a man who’s already assaulted one person and threatened our children.” “Damian—” I started. “No,” h

Now.”I didn’t ask questions. I ran down the hallway, heart pounding violently against my ribs, bursting into Lily’s room to find her sitting up in bed, already awake, eyes wide with confused alarm.“Mom? What’s happening?”“We need to move, baby. Right now.” I pulled her from bed, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders as security guards flooded the hallway, weapons drawn, voices low and urgent as they coordinated a sweep of the entire property.“He’s not inside,” one of the guards confirmed within minutes, voice tight with controlled urgency. “The signal came from outside the perimeter. We’re checking the monitor’s frequency now — someone hacked into the baby monitor’s wireless signal remotely.”“Remotely,” Damian repeated, disbelief and fur

Harper“Alone” was not going to happen. I showed Damian the message, and his jaw set immediately.“Absolutely not,” he said. “That’s exactly the kind of message someone sends when they want to isolate a target.”“It’s from Richard’s number.”“Numbers can be spoofed, Harper. Or Richard could be compromised somehow, forced to send it.” He was already dialing Detective Ruiz. “We’re not doing this without police involved. Not after everything that’s happened.”Detective Ruiz answered immediately, and within minutes, a plan had formed — officers would meet us near the marina, staying out of sight but close enough to respond instantly, while Damian and I approached together, refusing to split up despite whatever the message had requested. The drive out to the marina took nearly forty minutes, the abandoned property emerging gradually from behind overgrown brush and weathered fencing, exactly the kind of forgotten place that made sense for secrets to have festered for over two decades.“Ther

Chapter 55HarperVanessa stood in our living room when we came downstairs, flanked awkwardly by two security guards who clearly weren’t sure whether to treat her as a guest or a threat. She looked nothing like the polished, composed woman from the gala months earlier. Her hair was disheveled, mascara smudged beneath red-rimmed eyes, hands trembling slightly at her sides.“Harper. Damian.” Her voice cracked on both names. “I need to talk to you. Please.”“Give us a moment,” Damian said to the security guards, though his tone carried none of its usual authority, uncertainty coloring every word.Once they’d stepped back, giving us space without leaving the room entirely, Vanessa sank onto the edge of the couch, hands pressed against her face.“I didn’t do this,” she said before either of us could speak. “Whatever you’re thinking, whatever Renata told you, I didn’t hurt anyone.”“Renata’s your cousin,” I said carefully. “You knew about her investigation.”“I found out three days ago,” Va

Chapter 54HarperThe drive to the station passed in tense silence, streetlights strobing across the windshield while Damian gripped the steering wheel tighter than necessary, knuckles pale against the leather.“Is he alive?” I’d asked Detective Ruiz the moment we called back.“Alive,” she’d confirmed. “Unconscious, in critical condition. We don’t know more than that yet.”Small mercy, though it did little to ease the dread sitting heavy in my chest as we walked into the station twenty minutes later. Detective Ruiz met us in the lobby, expression grave despite her usual composed professionalism.“Thank you for coming so quickly,” she said, guiding us toward a small conference room. “I want to be transparent with you both, given how directly this affects your investigation.”“What happened to him?” I asked.“Blunt force trauma. Someone struck him outside his home, left him for the neighbors to find. Whoever did this clearly wanted him silenced before he could speak with Renata Cole tom
