Chapter 48

Damian

“An hour,” Daniel repeated, glancing between Richard and Harper. “That’s what he says. After that, it goes to every major outlet on his contact list.”

Richard’s jaw tightened, though he remained remarkably composed given the circumstances. “Then we have an hour to make sure the truth reaches Harper properly before it reaches strangers first.”

“Start talking,” Harper said, voice steady despite the visible tension in her shoulders. “All of it, Richard. From the beginning.”

Richard nodded slowly, folding his hands together the way he always did before difficult conversations, a habit I recognized instantly from years of watching him navigate boardroom crises with the same careful control.

“James and I met in our twenties,” he began. “Business school, actually, before either of us had built anything substantial. We were close, closer than most partners ever become. When we finally launched our first venture together, it felt like the beginning of something remarkable.”

“What happened?” Harper asked.

“Success,” Richard said simply. “Or my inability to share it properly. Our company grew faster than either of us anticipated, and somewhere along the way, I convinced myself I deserved more credit, more control, more ownership than our original partnership actually allowed.”

“So you pushed him out.”

“I manipulated a board vote,” Richard admitted, something raw entering his voice. “Used information I’d gathered about his personal finances, information he’d shared with me in confidence, years earlier, back when we still trusted each other completely. I twisted it into leverage, convinced our other partners he’d mismanaged funds, though the reality was considerably more complicated than the story I told.”

Harper’s expression remained carefully controlled, though I could see the effort it cost her. “And then?”

“He lost everything,” Richard said quietly. “His shares, his reputation, eventually his marriage, as your mother struggled watching him spiral into depression and desperation trying to rebuild something he’d trusted me enough to help create in the first place.”

Daniel, silent until now, finally spoke. “He tried reaching out to Richard multiple times afterward. Begging for any kind of settlement, any acknowledgment of what actually happened. Richard’s lawyers shut every attempt down completely.”

“That’s true,” Richard said, not bothering to deny it. “I told myself protecting my own reputation mattered more than acknowledging what I’d actually done to him. I buried the guilt beneath ambition, the same way I buried most uncomfortable emotions during those years.”

Harper’s hands trembled slightly against the documents spread across the table. “And his death?”

“A car accident,” Richard said firmly. “Eighteen months after everything fell apart between us. I want you to understand, Harper, I had absolutely nothing to do with that directly. But I’ve spent every year since wondering if the stress, the humiliation, the financial ruin I caused contributed to circumstances that made that accident more likely.”

“He’d been drinking,” Daniel added quietly. “Heavily, by that point. Something he never did before everything with Richard fell apart.”

The room fell silent, weight of decades-old guilt and grief settling heavily across everyone present. Harper stared at the documents in front of her, processing information that fundamentally reshaped everything she’d believed about her own history.

“My mother knew all of this,” she said finally, voice barely above a whisper.

“She confronted me once,” Richard said. “Years ago, shortly after James’s death. I offered financial compensation, something to help her and you rebuild. She refused entirely, said no amount of money could undo what I’d taken from your family.”

“So instead she just… buried it. Filled me with anger about vague wealthy cruelty instead of telling me the actual, specific truth.”

“I imagine she was protecting you,” I said carefully, watching Harper process everything with visible difficulty. “Protecting you from carrying this same weight she’d carried alone for years.”

Harper looked up at me, something complicated behind her expression—hurt, understanding, exhaustion all tangled together. “You knew fragments of this. Before today.”

“Fragments,” I admitted. “Nothing concrete enough to connect fully until your last name registered clearly, months into everything between us. By then, admitting what little I knew felt like risking destroying something I’d already fallen in love with.”

“You should have told me anyway.”

“I know,” I said honestly. “I was wrong not to. I let fear of losing you outweigh honesty you absolutely deserved.”

Harper studied me for a long moment, something shifting slowly behind her carefully guarded expression, though the hurt remained clearly present beneath it.

Daniel’s phone buzzed again, breaking the tense silence. “Thirty minutes left,” he said quietly. “Thomas wants confirmation this is actually being addressed properly, not just buried again behind another generation of Blackwood silence.”

Richard stood immediately, decisive in a way that reminded me suddenly of the version of him I’d feared throughout most of my childhood, though this time the decisiveness carried something closer to genuine accountability rather than manipulation.

“Then let’s give him confirmation,” Richard said. “I’ll issue a public statement myself, tonight, acknowledging exactly what I did to James Vale, taking full responsibility rather than allowing Thomas Reyes to control the narrative through leaked documents and anonymous threats.”

“Richard, that could destroy the company’s reputation,” I said. “Everything we’ve rebuilt—”

“Then it destroys it,” Richard said firmly. “I’ve spent decades protecting reputation over honesty, Damian. Watching you and Harper build something genuine, something actually worth protecting, has taught me that reputation without integrity isn’t worth preserving at all.”

Harper watched this exchange carefully, something almost like respect flickering behind her earlier hurt and confusion. “You’d actually do that? Publicly?”

“I owe your family considerably more than a private apology,” Richard said. “Public accountability seems like the very least I can offer, this late in correcting decades of cowardice.”

Harper remained quiet for a long moment, processing everything happening around her with visible difficulty. Finally, she looked toward me, something uncertain but slightly softer behind her exhausted expression.

“I need time,” she said. “Not just tonight. Actual time, to process everything I’ve learned, to figure out how I feel about my own history being this different than everything I believed for years.”

“Take whatever time you need,” I said quietly. “I’m not going anywhere, Harper. Regardless of how long healing this properly takes.”

She nodded slowly, though something in her posture suggested exhaustion beyond just tonight’s revelations. Daniel’s phone buzzed once more, this time with a message he read silently before looking up with visible alarm.

“Thomas isn’t waiting for Richard’s statement,” he said, voice tight with sudden urgency. “He’s already sent everything to a journalist. Says the story goes live within the hour regardless of what happens here tonight.”

  • MARRIED TO MY ENEMY'S FATHER   Chapter 59

Chapter 59 Harper My pulse spiked, though I forced my expression to remain neutral, forced my hands to stay steady around the coffee cup in front of me. “Don’t turn around,” Detective Ruiz’s voice continued through the earpiece, low and controlled. “Keep talking to Renata. We’re repositioning now.” Renata, watching my face carefully, seemed to sense something shifting despite my attempt at composure. “Harper?” “Just keep talking,” I murmured, barely moving my lips. “Ask me about the marina documents. Anything ordinary.” She nodded slightly, launching into careful, rehearsed conversation about the investigation’s supposed next steps, though her voice carried a thin thread of tension beneath the practiced calm. “Two tables behind you,” Detective Ruiz continued quietly. “Gray jacket, baseball cap. Not alone, like I said — there’s a second man near the door, positioned like he’s watching the exits.” I fought the urge to glance backward, focusing instead on Renata’s face, on the st

Chapter 58 Harper “What kind of plan?” I asked, gripping the phone tighter. “I’d rather explain in person,” Detective Ruiz said. “But Harper, I want to be honest with you upfront. It involves you being visible, briefly, somewhere Marcus expects you to be. We’d have full protection in place, officers stationed at every angle. But I won’t pretend there’s zero risk.” My stomach tightened immediately. “You want to use me as bait.” “I want to use the appearance of an opportunity,” Detective Ruiz corrected carefully. “Marcus has been operating in shadows for over a decade specifically because he’s never had to expose himself directly. Give him a target he believes is unprotected, and he becomes considerably easier to catch.” Damian, listening on speaker beside me, shook his head immediately. “Absolutely not. I’m not letting Harper walk into a scenario designed specifically to lure out a man who’s already assaulted one person and threatened our children.” “Damian—” I started. “No,” h

Chapter 57HarperThe voice through the monitor froze us both instantly.Damian moved first, scooping Grace from her crib in one swift motion, cradling her against his chest even as she stirred and whimpered at the sudden disruption. “Get Lily. Now.”I didn’t ask questions. I ran down the hallway, heart pounding violently against my ribs, bursting into Lily’s room to find her sitting up in bed, already awake, eyes wide with confused alarm.“Mom? What’s happening?”“We need to move, baby. Right now.” I pulled her from bed, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders as security guards flooded the hallway, weapons drawn, voices low and urgent as they coordinated a sweep of the entire property.“He’s not inside,” one of the guards confirmed within minutes, voice tight with controlled urgency. “The signal came from outside the perimeter. We’re checking the monitor’s frequency now — someone hacked into the baby monitor’s wireless signal remotely.”“Remotely,” Damian repeated, disbelief and fur

Harper“Alone” was not going to happen. I showed Damian the message, and his jaw set immediately.“Absolutely not,” he said. “That’s exactly the kind of message someone sends when they want to isolate a target.”“It’s from Richard’s number.”“Numbers can be spoofed, Harper. Or Richard could be compromised somehow, forced to send it.” He was already dialing Detective Ruiz. “We’re not doing this without police involved. Not after everything that’s happened.”Detective Ruiz answered immediately, and within minutes, a plan had formed — officers would meet us near the marina, staying out of sight but close enough to respond instantly, while Damian and I approached together, refusing to split up despite whatever the message had requested. The drive out to the marina took nearly forty minutes, the abandoned property emerging gradually from behind overgrown brush and weathered fencing, exactly the kind of forgotten place that made sense for secrets to have festered for over two decades.“Ther

  • MARRIED TO MY ENEMY'S FATHER   Chapter 55

Chapter 55HarperVanessa stood in our living room when we came downstairs, flanked awkwardly by two security guards who clearly weren’t sure whether to treat her as a guest or a threat. She looked nothing like the polished, composed woman from the gala months earlier. Her hair was disheveled, mascara smudged beneath red-rimmed eyes, hands trembling slightly at her sides.“Harper. Damian.” Her voice cracked on both names. “I need to talk to you. Please.”“Give us a moment,” Damian said to the security guards, though his tone carried none of its usual authority, uncertainty coloring every word.Once they’d stepped back, giving us space without leaving the room entirely, Vanessa sank onto the edge of the couch, hands pressed against her face.“I didn’t do this,” she said before either of us could speak. “Whatever you’re thinking, whatever Renata told you, I didn’t hurt anyone.”“Renata’s your cousin,” I said carefully. “You knew about her investigation.”“I found out three days ago,” Va

Chapter 54HarperThe drive to the station passed in tense silence, streetlights strobing across the windshield while Damian gripped the steering wheel tighter than necessary, knuckles pale against the leather.“Is he alive?” I’d asked Detective Ruiz the moment we called back.“Alive,” she’d confirmed. “Unconscious, in critical condition. We don’t know more than that yet.”Small mercy, though it did little to ease the dread sitting heavy in my chest as we walked into the station twenty minutes later. Detective Ruiz met us in the lobby, expression grave despite her usual composed professionalism.“Thank you for coming so quickly,” she said, guiding us toward a small conference room. “I want to be transparent with you both, given how directly this affects your investigation.”“What happened to him?” I asked.“Blunt force trauma. Someone struck him outside his home, left him for the neighbors to find. Whoever did this clearly wanted him silenced before he could speak with Renata Cole tom
