CHAPTER SEVENTY-SIX:

“I heard you tell Mom you’re still scared of the quiet.”

Theo stood in the doorway of the study with his arms locked across his chest. No backpack. No jacket. Just the kind of stillness that meant he had decided this was happening now.

Dimitri turned from the desk. “You were listening.”

“I live here.” Theo stepped inside and shut the door. “I get to listen when the walls are thin and the promises keep changing shape.”

Lyra appeared behind him before Dimitri could answer, ba

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE EMPTY SHIFT

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED EIGHTEEN:“I don’t know who I’m supposed to be in this house anymore.”Theo said it standing in the middle of the living room at 8:15 p.m. with the TV muted and his hands locked on the back of the couch. June had already been sent upstairs under protest. Anna slept in Lyra’s lap, mouth open, breath even.Dimitri stayed near the wall. “You’re supposed to be twelve.”“That’s not a job.” Theo’s voice was tight and fast. “Everyone else still has a function. You watch. Mom decides. June reports to the new chain of command. I sit in chairs and pretend the quiet doesn’t sound like a warning. It’s like you fired me and kept me in the building.”Lyra adjusted Anna without standing. “We didn’t fire you. We took back work that never should have been yours full-time.”“It feels like fired.” Theo paced once, then stopped. “At least when I was the alarm I knew what I was for. Now I’m just the kid who flinches and stays seated while adults say clear over his head.”“That is the w

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE JOB HE TRIED TO TAKE BACK

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED SEVENTEEN:“She’s been quiet too long.”Theo stood in the kitchen doorway at 7:20 a.m. with his shoes half on and his eyes already moving past Lyra toward the living room where Anna had been playing.Lyra didn’t turn from the toaster. “She’s with your father.”“I don’t hear her.”“You don’t have to.” Lyra’s voice stayed flat. “You’re off the clock.”Theo stepped in harder. “Being off the clock doesn’t mean I go deaf. It’s too quiet. Something’s wrong.”Dimitri appeared from the living room with Anna on his hip, cracker crumbs on both of them, pure ordinary mess. Anna reached for Theo immediately.Theo’s whole body locked between taking her and not taking the job with her.“See,” Dimitri said, exact. “Quiet because she was chewing. Not because she collapsed.”Theo’s face flushed. “I didn’t say she collapsed.”“You came in like she had.” Dimitri kept Anna. On purpose. “That’s the alarm taking a daytime shift it doesn’t own.”June hovered near the table with a spoon,

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE SPACE BETWEEN SYSTEMS

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN:“I can’t tell if I’m better or just quieter.”Theo said it from the doorway of the den at 9:40 p.m., already in socks, already braced. Dimitri sat on the sofa with his phone face up on his knee. The rest of the house had finally gone still.“That’s not nothing,” Dimitri said.“It feels like nothing.” Theo stepped in but stayed near the door. “I stayed off the clock. You stopped looking at me for confirmation. Mom cleared a cough without drafting me. I did homework for twenty minutes without tracking anyone’s lungs. And I still feel like I’m waiting for the part where it all snaps back.”Lyra appeared behind him in the hall, arms crossed. “Then say you’re waiting. Don’t turn the waiting into a verdict that the split is fake.”Theo turned on her too fast. “I’m not calling it fake. I’m saying I don’t trust a calm that only exists because everybody is following a script. Scripts break. Then what am I? The kid who believed the quiet again?”The den felt too sma

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    OFF THE CLOCK

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FOURTEEN:“She’s coughing.”June said it from the doorway like a report she’d been trained to deliver.Theo didn’t look up from the kitchen table. “Tell Mom.”“You’re right here.”“I’m off the clock.” His pencil kept moving. “Tell Mom.”June hovered, confused. “But you always—”“I don’t always. Not anymore.” Theo’s voice stayed flat. “Adults own the day. Go.”She went. The hallway took her footsteps toward the living room.Theo stared at the same math problem until the numbers stopped meaning anything. His body had already started listening. Counting. Measuring the gaps between the coughs drifting from the other room. He pressed the pencil harder and stayed in the chair.Lyra’s voice carried, calm and exact. “Checking.”A pause.“Clear.”Theo’s shoulders dropped a fraction. Then climbed again because the whole sequence had still happened inside his earshot and his nervous system didn’t care about the new split.Dimitri appeared in the kitchen doorway. “You stayed a

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE DAYLIGHT RULES

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THIRTEEN:“I’m not doing the night watch in the afternoon anymore.”Theo said it standing in the middle of the living room with Anna on a blanket at his feet and the discharge papers still on the coffee table. No buildup. No soft landing.Lyra looked up from the script she was sorting. Dimitri stopped in the doorway with a water glass in his hand. June sat frozen on the arm of the couch.“Okay,” Lyra said carefully. “Then we change it. Specifics.”“Specifics.” Theo’s voice was flat and fast. “No more checking faces every time she coughs. No more silent counting in the kitchen. No more June asking me if her breathing sounds weird like I’m the resident expert on lungs. I can’t be the alarm system from breakfast to bedtime. I won’t.”Anna picked up a block and banged it once. The sound made every adult shoulder tighten. Theo noticed and laughed once, sharp. “See. That. That right there. A block hits the floor and this whole room climbs. I’m done living inside that cli
