Ann’s POV

I was at loss for words as I watched Jake leave. Tears immediately ran down my cheek. I, for one, had thought I would get a happy birthday gift and breakfast was the beginning.

It was my birthday after all and I had thought he remembered but I wasn't so sure now. My heart ached and I couldn't stop myself from crying.

This wasn't how I had imagined my birthday a few days ago. I couldn't believe this was all happening and I felt deep within me that Jake was going to meet the other woman.

I felt like following him but I felt so weak. The pain I was getting from both my leg and even my heart made me sit still. He didn't even glance back to check if I was still alive or had dropped dead before he walked out that day.

I couldn't continue like this. I needed to speak to someone. I called the one person I believed would have my back.Jane.

I called her thrice. She didn't pick. It was so unlike her. I really needed her more than ever. I wasn't even sure if I would be able to walk for now.

I wondered if I would be able to attend the party with shoes on.This thoughts even pushed the tears out more. I felt so many things at once and one thing I knew for sure was the fact that I was sexually starved.

The doorbell rang and I went to get it hopping on one foot before I could say a word, Jane and Claire burst in singing a birthday song.

“Wha….what are you guys doing here?” I asked tearfully, as I now felt a mixture of both sadness and happiness.

The two of them immediately stopped singing when they took a good look at me.

“Your legs are bandaged?!” Claire exclaimed immediately and tried her best to hold on to the cake she was holding as her hands began to shake.

Jane took my hands and placed it on her shoulder as she assisted me to a chair in the sitting room. Claire carefully placed the cake on the center table.

“Why didn't you pick your call?” I asked Jane as tears welled up in my eyes again.

“I’m sorry but I couldn't ruin the surprise. I mean I was already downstairs you know.” Jane said to me, holding her two hands clasped together begging me.

“And why would the birthday girl be crying?” Claire asked and the two girls I loved the most in this world looked at me curiously.

“I….I….,” My throat tightened again and I could feel tears welling up once more. I couldn't even bring myself to say what I really wanted to say.

“Breathe. Fine. Leave that question out. Seems like you need fresh air.” Jane announced.

Trust her to always know how to gauge my emotions. She was like my mother and elder sister. 

“Oh…. Where should we go then?!” Claire asked, jumping up as she went towards the dining area.

“Oh…. I see how you got injured now. You two wait while I clean this place up.” 

While Claire was doing that Jane continued looking at me silently.

“You would need an ice pack. It seems like you didn't even sleep well last night.” Her eyes immediately brightened as she gave me a suspicious look. I couldn't help but laugh. I understood that look so well.

“It didn't happen,” I said calmly.

“What?!” Jane exclaimed so loudly even Claire glanced at us and shouted,

“Hey you two! Don't leave me out!”

“But why?” Jane asked, giving me a cautious look.

Tears welled up in my eyes again as I looked at my best friend who was also a divorce lawyer.

“He wants a divorce Jane.”

“What?! Who?! Jake?!” Claire’s exclamations surprised both of us as we glanced in her direction. 

We had both not even heard her come close. I nodded with a pained expression.

“Did you hurt yourself because of it?” Claire asked me as she came to sit close to me taking her hands into his.

“No..no. I did no such thing. It was an accident. I broke the mug and stepped on a broken piece.” I explained as I looked from Claire to Jane.

“Why would he want a divorce? And of all times now? Today? On your birthday?” Jane asked, her face turning red with anger. She had always been protective of me.

“I really don't know Jane. I was given the papers last night when he came in.” I sighed a sad sigh.

I wasn't sure what I was feeling but one thing I knew was talking to my two most cherished friends seemed to ease the pain I was feeling.

“Does he have another woman?” Claire’s question threw me as I immediately felt a sharp pain in my heart.

Jane looked at my pained expression and nodded as she said softly,

“That could be the only reason I could think of.”

“I know. I know. I also think he does,” I said and began crying again.

Jane pulled me into a hug as she began patting my back softly.

“You two shouldn't leave me out!” Claire shouted and hugged both of us.

They both let me cry for a while then Jane pulled away from the embrace.

“You need to freshen up. We are going out. It’s your birthday today and you are going to have nothing but the best.”

I smiled at her. This was exactly why I wanted to call her. She always knew the right words to say. My parents hadn't been so loving or should I say my father and step mom but Jane had made me not even feel that since she came into my life.

I nodded my head and stood up at once but the pain that coursed through my foot made me scream and almost fall but they both caught me on time.

“Guess we would need to help you out.” Claire pointed out.

“I’m sorry.” I said laughing.

Then a notification came to my phone. I really shouldn't have checked because when I did, I saw Jake sleeping so soundly on an unfamiliar bed with a female hand on him.
