Charlene had just stepped off the bus when her friend Sheena called. She answered at once.

“Are you already in Manila?” her friend asked excitedly.

“Yes. I just got off. Wait—I’m still hungry. I’ll grab something to eat first.”

She wandered around the terminal until she found a vendor selling balut. She bought four pieces and asked for directions to her next ride. Being new to Manila, she didn’t yet know her way around. Charlene was a provincial girl who had come to the city in search of better opportunities, knowing that work in the countryside was painfully limited.

“Your first priority is to find a place to stay,” Sheena reminded her. “There are lots of rooms for rent, but be careful. Once they realize you’re new here, they’ll try to overcharge you.”

“I will. I’ll look for something within my budget,” Charlene replied as she stood up to throw away the shells of the balut she had eaten.

She walked around for nearly half an hour, but still couldn’t find a place she could afford.

Fatigue and hunger were starting to creep in, but she forced herself to endure it. The little money left in her wallet had to be saved for rent—she couldn’t waste it on food.

“What? You still haven’t found anything?” her cousin asked over the phone.

“Not yet. I’m already tired from walking,” Charlene complained as she crossed the street.

“Why don’t you take a break first?” Sheena suggested.

“I can still manage. Besides, it’s getting dark. I might end up sleeping outside,” she joked.

“I’m close by—ah, shoot!”

Her playful tone turned into a startled cry as she was suddenly knocked down in the middle of the road, nearly hit by a car. Irritated, Charlene quickly stood up and stormed toward the vehicle that had screeched to a stop in front of her.

“Hey! Are you trying to kill me?! Don’t you know how to drive?! What—are you going to pay for my funeral if you run me over?!” she shouted angrily.

A moment later, the car door opened and a tall, well-built man stepped out, dressed so sharply he looked like he owned the street itself.

“Miss… you were the one who wasn’t watching where you were going,” he said coldly, removing his sunglasses. “This is a road, and you crossed while using your phone. Are you insane?”

“So now it’s my fault?” Charlene snapped. “With that attitude of yours, don’t your parents teach you any manners?!”

The man could only shake his head. To him, Charlene looked like one of those people who deliberately got hit just to extort money from the rich—especially since he was the CEO of one of the most famous clothing brands in the country.

“Tell me what you want,” he said impatiently. “Money?”

That was the last thing Charlene wanted to hear.

“Do I look like I need your money?!” she shot back, ignoring the growing crowd that had started watching them argue in the middle of the street.

The man was about to respond when his phone rang. He answered quickly.

“I’ll be there in a minute. I just ran into a small problem,” he said before ending the call. He pulled out a business card and pressed it into Charlene’s hand.

“What am I supposed to do with this?”

“Call my secretary if you need anything, miss. I have to go—”

“Wait! You haven’t even apologized!”

“Stop wasting my time. I have a meeting to attend.”

“I don’t care about your meetings! You almost killed me! My leg and my backside hurt from that fall, you know!”

The man took a deep, irritated breath and opened the car door.

“Fine. I’ll take you to the hospital. Now get in. You’re wasting too much of my time.”

Charlene immediately shook her head.

“No! Who knows where you might take me? That face of yours doesn’t exactly look trustworthy!”

“What—just… get in, miss,” he ordered sharply.

But when Charlene still refused, he had no choice but to lift her and place her inside the car himself before locking the door.

“Hey! Let me out! What are you doing?!”

“Be quiet! You’re wasting my time!”

“If you’re planning to kidnap me, I’m telling you now—no one will pay a ransom! My family is poor! We live in a small house in the province!”

“Quiet. I don’t care who you are,” he said coldly as he started the engine. “If you’re in pain, I’m taking you to the hospital. So be quiet—or I’ll throw you out of the car window.”

After lunch, the three children were made to get dressed to accompany Charlene to buy new clothes and necessities. Almost at the same time, they started complaining while buttoning their shirts and slipping on their shoes, as if being forced to go out with a woman they did not even like was a punishment.Charlene stood quietly to the side, holding a simple blouse she had borrowed from Sarah.“I just borrowed this,” she said softly. “I’ll return it right away.”Sarah smiled and patted her shoulder. “That’s fine, Ma’am. They’re going to buy you new ones anyway.”Outside, a black van was already waiting in the driveway. Saviel stepped out and opened the door.“Ma’am Charlene.”The three children went in first. Wency even shoved Wyl just to get the back seat.“This is so annoying!” Wency complained as she dropped into her seat. “I don’t even want to come.”“Please get in, Ma’am,” Saviel said.Charlene sat in the passenger seat while the children continued complaining behind her.“You can

When Charlene finally calmed down, she left her room. The servants stared at her as they whispered among themselves about what had happened earlier.“Poor girl.”“I knew it would end up like this.”“How long do you think she’ll last?”Those were only a few of the words she heard as she walked down the hallway toward the kitchen. There, she found Manang Dores with a few other maids preparing lunch.“How are you, Charlene? Are you feeling better?” Manang Dores asked as she handed her a glass of water. Charlene drank it and forced a small smile.“Oh, and this… I’m sorry, this is all I managed to save from your things,” the old woman added, pulling out a small handkerchief from her pocket.Charlene let out a quiet breath of relief when she saw that it hadn’t burned. It was the handkerchief Enan had given her. She smiled gratefully as she took it from Manang Dores. It was one of the few things she treasured most—now the only thing Enan had ever left with her.“What are you cooking?” she as

Charlene slept well that night, so when she opened her eyes the next morning, her body felt lighter. Today, she would begin her plan to get closer to the children. It wouldn’t be easy, but she was determined to try—no matter how hard it became.“Good morning, Ma’am,” the household staff greeted as she passed them in the hallway. The words made her chest feel heavy. She was the owner’s wife—even if only on paper.Still, she returned every smile. She didn’t want to be seen as cold or arrogant. She wanted to get along with everyone, even if she was only meant to stay in this mansion for a short time. When she reached the stairs, she saw Edgar, Kerill’s ever-present bodyguard.“Good morning, Edgar,” she greeted warmly. He gave a small nod. “Good morning, Ma’am Charlene.”“So early in the morning and you already look grumpy,” she teased, hoping to make him smile. But Edgar remained serious. The awkward silence lingered until Kerill called him. Edgar excused himself and walked away, leaving

That evening, Charlene tried again to approach the kids—even though all the hardships they had put her through were still fresh in her mind. It was already night, so she decided to bring them snacks while they played in Erica’s room. She carried three glasses of milk and a glass of apple juice—Erica’s favorite, according to Manang Dores. She also had sliced apples and oranges arranged on a large tray.At the door, she took a deep breath before knocking.“Come in,” Erica said. She entered slowly, and the expressions on the kids’ faces immediately changed when they saw her at the door.“I thought you already ran away?” Erica asked sarcastically while sitting on the sofa, facing her siblings.Charlene ignored her. She quietly placed the tray on the table.“I know you’re hungry,” she said calmly. “So I brought you something to eat.”The kids looked at her without any emotion.“Sorry, what?” Erica said coldly. “We can’t understand you. Please speak in English.” She crossed her arms.Charle

A day had passed, and it was Saturday morning, so the kids had no school. Charlene decided to use this chance to get to know them better. She looked for them in their rooms but found none, so she thought of going down to the living room. But she almost broke a bone when she didn’t notice the marbles scattered on the stairs. One wrong step and she slipped. She had nothing to hold on to, so she rolled straight down to the bottom of the stairs. A hard impact met her body as she hit the tile floor. Her whole body went weak from the pain.“Good morning, Charlene.”Slowly, she lifted her head and saw the twins and Lily standing in front of her. All three grinned as they watched her struggle to stand. She didn’t need to ask; she already knew they were behind this.“You said you’d play with us,” Wency said. “Do you want to play hide and seek?”Charlene forced herself to stand, even though her body ached all over. She tried to smile.“O-okay,” she stammered. From the second floor, Erica watche

The next morning, Charlene woke up to the warm sunlight streaming into her eyes. She realized she hadn’t closed the window before going to sleep the night before. With a sigh, she got up and went to the bathroom. Thankfully, there was a toothbrush waiting for her, and all the toiletries she needed were neatly arranged. After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she headed downstairs to the dining area. Kerill was already sitting at the end of the long table, reading a newspaper and sipping his coffee. A selection of delicious dishes had been set out, instantly making Charlene’s stomach grumble. “Good morning,” she greeted softly.Kerill didn’t even look up.Instead, she smiled at Manang Dores, who returned her smile warmly. Soon after, Kerill’s children arrived: Erica, the eldest in Grade 12; the twins, Wency and Wyl, both in Grade 10; and the youngest, Lily, still in Grade 6.Charlene waved at the children, but they didn’t acknowledge her and quietly took their seats.
