The mysterious man left Charlene at the large hospital, and she never saw him again after that. The air outside was cold, brushing lightly against her face as she walked out through the emergency entrance. The nurses had attended to her, following the man’s instructions.

“Ma’am, none of your bones are broken, so you can relax now,” the nurse said with a smile after Charlene had spent a long time complaining about the pain. Her eyes were almost closing from exhaustion and irritation.

“Are you sure? It still hurts a little…” Charlene said, trying to suppress a groan.

“Ma’am, what would be the point of me being a nurse if I wasn’t sure?” the woman replied, clearly close to losing her patience. “Is there anything else you need?”

“No. Thank you,” Charlene answered softly, lowering her head as she leaned against the wall.

“You’re welcome,” the nurse said before walking away.

After a while, Charlene decided to leave the hospital and continue her search for work—or at least for a place to stay. But night had already fallen, and nothing had changed. The streetlights flickered, casting faint light over the dark streets. Her stomach ached with hunger, but she couldn’t afford to spend the little money she had left. It was reserved for rent—if she ever found a place.

Exhausted, she sat down in front of a large restaurant and closed her eyes, letting the warm, delicious scent of food surround her. She could almost taste the fresh bread, grilled meat, and rich spices drifting out from inside. Her mouth watered, but all she could do was endure the hunger and stop herself from buying even a small dish.

She slipped her hands into the pockets of her thick jacket as the cold slowly crept into her body. Her fingers brushed against something. When she pulled it out, she found the business card given to her by the man who had almost run her over earlier.

She remembered that she could call him if she needed anything—but then she realized she had no phone credit left. Annoyed, she put the card back into her pocket and lowered her head. It felt as though Manila itself was rejecting her. She never imagined it would be this hard to find a place to live or a job when you had no connections, especially in a city overflowing with people and endless hurry.

Across the street, Mr. Kerill Wang and his family were having dinner in the very restaurant in front of which Charlene was sitting. Warm lights reflected off wine glasses and silverware. With him were his younger brother, Lander; their father, Winito Wang; and their grandfather, Mr. Win, who had just arrived from the United States and invited them all out for dinner.

“How’s your business, Kerill?” Mr. Win asked, adjusting the cuff of his jacket as he watched his grandson eat in silence.

Kerill lifted his gaze and took a sip of water before replying. “We’re doing just fine, Mr. Win.”

“But I heard your sales dropped by one percent because of a rival brand’s new design,” the old man said sharply. “You do realize how big one percent is in your company’s ranking, don’t you?”

“Dad—” Winito tried to interrupt, but one look from Mr. Win silenced him.

“You need to learn where you failed, kid. Being at the top doesn’t last forever.”

“I know,” Kerill replied, his voice calm, though tension tightened his chest.

Silence followed, broken only by the clink of cutlery. Lander, who was already used to these tense family dinners, looked bored.

“Oh, right,” Mr. Win said suddenly. “You’re turning thirty this month. When are you planning to get married?”

“That’s not on my list,” Kerill answered flatly as he cut into his steak.

“Oh no, it has to be. Your children are growing up. They need a mother—”

“I’m here. I’m enough to raise them,” Kerill said firmly. “I have no plans to get married.”

“But I do—” Mr. Win cut in.

“I know many people in the U.S.,” he continued. “I’ve met their granddaughters. I think you’ll like them once you—”

“Dad, let him—”

“Enough, Winito,” Mr. Win snapped. “You’re too soft on him. Look at him now—he’ll grow old alone.”

“I don’t need a wife—”

“But your children need a mother,” Mr. Win said, making Kerill freeze. “You know how it feels to grow up without one. Do you want the same for your kids? Or are you still hoping Monica will come back?”

Kerill’s fists clenched at the mention of the woman he once loved.

“She’s not coming back,” Mr. Win continued coldly. “You will marry one of the women I choose—or else—”

“Or else what?” Kerill shot back as he stood up. “You can’t decide who I marry. I’d rather marry someone who walks through that door than one of the women you choose for me. I’m not a child anymore!”

He stormed toward the exit, his entire body tense with anger.

But the moment he opened the door, a woman collapsed right in front of him. He caught her just in time, her body falling into his arms. Cold air brushed against his skin, while the warm scent of food from the restaurant surrounded them.

“Guess you have to marry that girl…” Mr. Win muttered behind him.

Slowly, the woman lifted her face—and cursed when she realized who he was. She was the same woman he had almost run over earlier. The one he had taken to the hospital.

Charlene.

“I’m hungry… food… I need food…” she murmured before losing consciousness, her weight sinking fully into Kerill’s arms.

Walking fast.I immediately told Saviel to stop the car.“Wait here for me,” I said before stepping out.I knew that walk anywhere. It was Lander.I told Saviel I’d bring him back to the mansion with us. But Lander was moving quickly, weaving through people like he didn’t want to be seen. A few times I nearly lost sight of him.“Lander!” I called out, but he didn’t hear me.Then suddenly—he was gone.I turned around. And there he was.He had approached someone.I froze. The guy was handsome. Tall. Fair-skinned. Wearing the same senior high uniform as Ericka. At first, I thought they were just talking. Third Person POVIt was early morning, and Charlene was already in the kitchen preparing breakfast for everyone. She moved around with a bright smile on her face, humming softly as she cooked. The housemaids couldn’t help but notice.“Oy… something must’ve happened last night.”“Naku, Ma’am’s in love.”“Ma’am, what did Sir do? Your smile is glowing today!”Charlene turned to them, trying to look innocent. “What are you talking about? I’m just in a good mood because the weather’s nice.”None of them looked convinced. After finishing the dishes, she realized Kerill hadn’t come downstairs yet. She glanced at the wall clock and frowned. By this time, he was usually already brewing his morning coffee. But today—nothing.“Maybe he just overslept, Ma’am,” one of the maids teased as she passed by.Still, Charlene couldn’t shake off her uneasiness. She decided to check on him herself. She knocked on his bedroom door. No answer. No movement.“I’m coming in,” she said before turning the knob.In

Charlene’s POVWhen he said he would cook, he actually did.The moment we got home, he went straight to the kitchen and started preparing ingredients like it was second nature. I stood there, stunned. Not only could Kerill cook—he handled the knife like a professional chef. Clean cuts. Precise movements. Confident.“When did you learn to cook?” I asked, unable to stop myself as he sliced through the meat.“Not when,” he corrected calmly. “Why. Because I had to. I grew up with only maids around me, and I didn’t like their cooking. My mom wasn’t there… so I learned on my own. To survive.”I fell silent.Until now, I still wondered why his mother wasn’t around. What happened? Did she die? Did she leave for another man?“She has her own family now,” he said suddenly.I blinked. Was he reading my mind? Before I could respond, I noticed the maids gathered by the kitchen door, grinning from ear to ear as they watched us.“Yes?” I asked. They giggled.“Nothing, Ma’am Charlene. Please, don’t m

The car was wrapped in silence as they headed home from the office. Kerill sat in the backseat, eyes closed—but Saviel could tell he wasn’t asleep. His posture was rigid, his presence heavy. Up front, Saviel drove without a word.Saviel was used to his boss’s quiet nature. But this was different. The silence these past few days felt heavier than usual—dense, burdened with thoughts Kerill refused to voice.“Boss,” Saviel finally said, eyes still on the road.No response. Kerill only stared out the window, his expression unreadable.“If you’re having trouble with Ma’am, thinking about it alone won’t fix anything.”Kerill turned slightly. “Since when did you start giving advice?” he asked coolly.“Since I noticed you’ve been spacing out a lot. No offense, Boss.”Kerill didn’t reply. Saviel sighed. “I’m not an expert with women. But maybe… try doing some research?”“Tsk. Nonsense,” Kerill muttered. “I’m thinking about business. Nothing else.”“We?”Kerill shot him an irritated look. “Can

Third Person POVToday, Kerill had a meeting with the company’s new investors. It was one of the most important presentations of the year, with the expansion of their new product line riding on it. They were discussing projected sales, target consumers, and the estimated profits for the year.He sat at the far end of the long conference table, back straight, face serious, as Hart went through the proposed adjustments to the product designs, particularly the children’s wear line.To everyone else, he appeared calm and in control. But in truth, his mind wasn’t there at all. From time to time, he glanced at his wristwatch. For some reason, the minutes felt slower than usual. Each tick seemed to stretch. His thoughts wandered to Charlene. Had Black picked her up again? Were they together right now? Where had they gone?He shouldn’t be thinking about it.He had no right to.And yet, every time the image of her with another man entered his mind, a strange tension gripped his chest. It wasn’

It was Sunday. Kerill had no work, and the children had no classes, which meant Charlene was busier than usual taking care of everyone.Kerill woke up close to noon. The first thing his eyes searched for was Charlene—but she was nowhere to be found in any corner of the house.“Where the hell is she?” he muttered, irritation creeping in. An unwanted thought crossed his mind—that she might be with his brother.“Wait… why am I even looking for that woman?” he scoffed.Yet his feet betrayed him, leading him straight to Charlene’s bedroom. He frowned at himself for being there, but he entered anyway. Charlene wasn’t inside, though a fresh set of clothes lay neatly on the bed. The sound of running water echoed from the bathroom. He was about to leave when her phone suddenly rang on the bed. Curiosity got the better of him. He glanced at the screen—and his brows immediately furrowed when he saw the caller.Black.Are you free tomorrow? the message read.Without hesitation, Kerill picked up t
