After leaving Kerill, Charlene went straight to the police station to file a complaint against him. But the moment the officers heard his name, their expressions changed. Everyone knew the power of the Wang family—and no one wanted to stand against them.

“Your evidence isn’t strong enough, miss,” one officer said flatly. “We can’t accept everything you claim, especially without proof.”

“But, sir—” Charlene tried to protest.

“Just go home for now,” another officer interrupted, giving her colleague a meaningful look. “We’ll take care of it.”

Charlene had no choice but to leave.

Even without saying it directly, she knew they had no intention of pursuing her case. It angered her to realize how easily money and influence could silence even the police.

As she walked away, she suddenly realized her suitcase was gone.

She collapsed onto the sidewalk and let her tears fall. She was exhausted, broken, and completely lost. Manila had not been what she imagined. For the first time, she regretted coming—but then she remembered why she had come in the first place.

To find Enan.

---

Twenty years ago…

Little Charlene lay beneath a large narra tree, staring at the bright blue sky. The sun was warm, the clouds drifting lazily above. She smiled, enjoying the peaceful moment.

“Hey, ugly! So this is where you were hiding!” Enan teased as he appeared beside her.

Charlene threw a small stick at him, but he dodged it easily.

“If that hits me, I’ll tell on you!” he warned.

“Go ahead!” she replied.

They lay side by side, staring at the sky.

“I have something to tell you,” Enan said quietly.

“Hm?”

“My dad wants us to move back to Manila.”

Charlene froze.

“When?” she asked.

“We’re leaving tomorrow.”

She forced a smile. “Then let’s make today count. Come to my house later—my mom is making your favorite snacks.”

They spent the day running, laughing, and visiting places they had never gone before.

Before sunset, Enan handed her a handkerchief with a small letter C stitched in the center.

“Don’t lose it,” he said. “I’ll take it back when we meet again.”

That night, he came to say goodbye—but Charlene hid under her blanket, crying. Enan left without seeing her.

---

Back in the present, Charlene wiped her tears again and again.

“Are you okay?” a gentle voice asked.

She looked up and saw a man smiling at her, holding out a handkerchief.

“You okay?”

“You’re from the province, right?” he added. “You look like one.”

That did it.

“What’s wrong with being from the province?!” Charlene snapped. “You city people act like you’re better than everyone else!”

“Wait—”

“You have no right to judge me!”

She was about to lunge when another man stepped in and held her back.

“Calm down!”

Charlene turned—and saw two men.

“I was just asking if she was okay,” the taller one said. “But she suddenly attacked me.”

Charlene stared at him.

It was Lander—the man who had helped bring her to the hospital.

The other man smiled warmly. “My name is Black Wang.”

Charlene’s eyes widened.

She recognized him.

He was a famous actor.

“Oh no…” she whispered.

“I think you know me already,” Black said with a grin. “You have my picture on your phone.”

Mortified, Charlene turned away.

“I’m so sorry!” she blurted. “I’ve just had a really bad day. Some crazy rich guy even tried to force me to be his wife!”

Lander burst out laughing.

“That’s her,” he told Black.

Black smiled. “Then I guess you should come with us.”

“Where?”

“To eat. You’re hungry—and so am I.”

With no strength left to refuse, Charlene followed them—unaware that Black had already informed Kerill that the woman he was looking for was now with them.

After lunch, the three children were made to get dressed to accompany Charlene to buy new clothes and necessities. Almost at the same time, they started complaining while buttoning their shirts and slipping on their shoes, as if being forced to go out with a woman they did not even like was a punishment.Charlene stood quietly to the side, holding a simple blouse she had borrowed from Sarah.“I just borrowed this,” she said softly. “I’ll return it right away.”Sarah smiled and patted her shoulder. “That’s fine, Ma’am. They’re going to buy you new ones anyway.”Outside, a black van was already waiting in the driveway. Saviel stepped out and opened the door.“Ma’am Charlene.”The three children went in first. Wency even shoved Wyl just to get the back seat.“This is so annoying!” Wency complained as she dropped into her seat. “I don’t even want to come.”“Please get in, Ma’am,” Saviel said.Charlene sat in the passenger seat while the children continued complaining behind her.“You can

When Charlene finally calmed down, she left her room. The servants stared at her as they whispered among themselves about what had happened earlier.“Poor girl.”“I knew it would end up like this.”“How long do you think she’ll last?”Those were only a few of the words she heard as she walked down the hallway toward the kitchen. There, she found Manang Dores with a few other maids preparing lunch.“How are you, Charlene? Are you feeling better?” Manang Dores asked as she handed her a glass of water. Charlene drank it and forced a small smile.“Oh, and this… I’m sorry, this is all I managed to save from your things,” the old woman added, pulling out a small handkerchief from her pocket.Charlene let out a quiet breath of relief when she saw that it hadn’t burned. It was the handkerchief Enan had given her. She smiled gratefully as she took it from Manang Dores. It was one of the few things she treasured most—now the only thing Enan had ever left with her.“What are you cooking?” she as

Charlene slept well that night, so when she opened her eyes the next morning, her body felt lighter. Today, she would begin her plan to get closer to the children. It wouldn’t be easy, but she was determined to try—no matter how hard it became.“Good morning, Ma’am,” the household staff greeted as she passed them in the hallway. The words made her chest feel heavy. She was the owner’s wife—even if only on paper.Still, she returned every smile. She didn’t want to be seen as cold or arrogant. She wanted to get along with everyone, even if she was only meant to stay in this mansion for a short time. When she reached the stairs, she saw Edgar, Kerill’s ever-present bodyguard.“Good morning, Edgar,” she greeted warmly. He gave a small nod. “Good morning, Ma’am Charlene.”“So early in the morning and you already look grumpy,” she teased, hoping to make him smile. But Edgar remained serious. The awkward silence lingered until Kerill called him. Edgar excused himself and walked away, leaving

That evening, Charlene tried again to approach the kids—even though all the hardships they had put her through were still fresh in her mind. It was already night, so she decided to bring them snacks while they played in Erica’s room. She carried three glasses of milk and a glass of apple juice—Erica’s favorite, according to Manang Dores. She also had sliced apples and oranges arranged on a large tray.At the door, she took a deep breath before knocking.“Come in,” Erica said. She entered slowly, and the expressions on the kids’ faces immediately changed when they saw her at the door.“I thought you already ran away?” Erica asked sarcastically while sitting on the sofa, facing her siblings.Charlene ignored her. She quietly placed the tray on the table.“I know you’re hungry,” she said calmly. “So I brought you something to eat.”The kids looked at her without any emotion.“Sorry, what?” Erica said coldly. “We can’t understand you. Please speak in English.” She crossed her arms.Charle

A day had passed, and it was Saturday morning, so the kids had no school. Charlene decided to use this chance to get to know them better. She looked for them in their rooms but found none, so she thought of going down to the living room. But she almost broke a bone when she didn’t notice the marbles scattered on the stairs. One wrong step and she slipped. She had nothing to hold on to, so she rolled straight down to the bottom of the stairs. A hard impact met her body as she hit the tile floor. Her whole body went weak from the pain.“Good morning, Charlene.”Slowly, she lifted her head and saw the twins and Lily standing in front of her. All three grinned as they watched her struggle to stand. She didn’t need to ask; she already knew they were behind this.“You said you’d play with us,” Wency said. “Do you want to play hide and seek?”Charlene forced herself to stand, even though her body ached all over. She tried to smile.“O-okay,” she stammered. From the second floor, Erica watche

The next morning, Charlene woke up to the warm sunlight streaming into her eyes. She realized she hadn’t closed the window before going to sleep the night before. With a sigh, she got up and went to the bathroom. Thankfully, there was a toothbrush waiting for her, and all the toiletries she needed were neatly arranged. After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she headed downstairs to the dining area. Kerill was already sitting at the end of the long table, reading a newspaper and sipping his coffee. A selection of delicious dishes had been set out, instantly making Charlene’s stomach grumble. “Good morning,” she greeted softly.Kerill didn’t even look up.Instead, she smiled at Manang Dores, who returned her smile warmly. Soon after, Kerill’s children arrived: Erica, the eldest in Grade 12; the twins, Wency and Wyl, both in Grade 10; and the youngest, Lily, still in Grade 6.Charlene waved at the children, but they didn’t acknowledge her and quietly took their seats.
