ANMELDENTRISTAN
My heart was still beating so fast as the music faded completely. The warmth of Iris’s breath on my neck had sent a jolt straight down my spine, waking my wolf with a violent snap. I forced my hand to loosen from her waist, stepping back immediately. Every nerve in my body was screaming at me to pull her back, but I clamped down on the urge until my jaw ached. "Stay near Jonathan," I told her. She nodded slowly as I turned on my heel and walked straight toward the high table where Lord Abby and Lord Cassian were standing, a cold smirk immediately forming on my lip. The two men were smiling, watching a young servant girl approach with a tray of wine. Her hands were trembling so hard the glass pitchers rattled against each other. "My King," Lord Abby said, bowing his head as I stopped in front of them. "A toast to your new bride. The court is honored by your generosity tonight." Lord Cassian picked up a freshly poured goblet from the tray and held it out toward me. "To the future of Varkhar, sire." I looked down at the goblet. The dark red liquid settled, looking completely normal to anyone else, but my Lycan nose caught the faint, sweet scent of nightshade. It was a very poisonous flower, grinded into powder and could kill in just a few seconds. These foolish men really thought they could trick me into drinking it. A cold smile appeared on my lips. At least, these dumb men should have thought of another different way to kill, not in the same way it had been done before. "You pour a generous glass, Cassian," I said quietly, taking the cup from his fingers. "Only the best for our Alpha," Cassian offered a smooth smile that did not reach his eyes. "Then you should have the first sip," I said, holding the goblet back out to him. Cassian froze. The fake warmth on his face instantly melted, his skin turning a sickly shade of grey. Beside him, Abby took a small step backward, his fingers twitching toward the inner lining of his coat. "Sire, I... I would not dare drink before my King," Cassian stammered, his eyes darting toward the exit doors. "Drink it," I commanded, my voice dropping into a low, dangerously cold tone that made the surrounding nobles go silent. Cassian took another step back, shaking his head frantically. "Your Grace, please…" Before he could run, I dropped the goblet, grabbed Cassian by the throat, and slammed him hard on the pillar. The glass shattered on the floor, red wine spilling everywhere. Women screamed, and several lords scrambled backward in terror. Abby pulled a short dagger from his coat, lunging at my side, but I caught his wrist mid-air, squeezing until the bone snapped with a loud crack. Abby shrieked in pain, dropping the blade as he fell to his knees. "Why is there poison in this wine, Cassian?" I asked calmly, my grip tightening on his wrist until his boots kicked uselessly off the floor. "Who gave it to you?" "I don't... I don't know what you mean!" Cassian choked out, gasping for air. "It was just wine!" I shoved him down to the cold floor, placing the heel of my boot directly on his chest and pressing down until I could hear the breaking of some bones. "Give me a name before I crush your chest." Cassian sobbed, blood leaking from the corner of his mouth as he looked around the room for help that wasn't coming. "Ashmoor! It was Ashmoor! Ethan Willow sent a messenger yesterday... he paid us to put it in your glass!" The entire hall went dead silent. Dozens of heads slowly turned, their cold, hostile eyes locking directly on Iris where she stood. Whispers broke out among the nobles, full of disgust and anger. They looked at her like she was a dirty traitor who had helped set up the attack. I turned my head and looked at Iris, too. Her face was completely pale, her eyes wide with pure shock as the weight of everyone's glare fell on her. For a second, anger flared in my gut toward her. She was a Willow. Her bloodline was rotten to the core, and her brother was still trying to kill me, despite the good I had rendered to his pathetic self.TRISTANHaving her locked away in my wing meant she would be right where I could see her every single day. It gave me a valid excuse to keep her close, to make sure she was safe, and maybe, just maybe, give me the chance to fix the mess I had made between us without looking weak."Fine," I said, keeping my expression completely blank so they wouldn't see through me. "She will remain in my quarters under my direct watch. She won't leave the royal wing without me."Garon nodded, looking thoroughly relieved that I hadn't argued with them. "A wise decision, Alpha. It is the best way to keep the castle secure.""We are done here," I stood up from the chair, not bothering to listen to another word from them, and walked straight out of the room with Jonathan following close behind."Should I inform Lady Iris of the new arrangement, sire?" Jonathan asked as we walked up the grand staircase toward my bedchamber."No," I said, my chest tightening as we approached the doors. "I will tell her my
TRISTANI stood motionless in the middle of the quiet corridor, watching Iris walk away until her dress disappeared around the corner. Chloe scrambled after her, visibly shaking from the tense encounter, and the two guards standing by the council doors kept their eyes glued to the floor, pretending they hadn't just witnessed the King of Varkhar get scolded like a misbehaving child.A sharp sting remained on my lower lip where she had bitten me the night before, but the throbbing ache in my chest was far worse. I gritted my teeth until my jaw hurt, staring at the empty space she had occupied just seconds ago.She was right, and that was the part that made my blood boil. I had acted like a complete monster last night. I had shoved her against the door, accused her of being a traitor, and forced a rough kiss on her when she was already terrified from the violence in the hall. My wolf was whining inside my mind, scratching at my ribs and demanding that I run after her, pull her into m
IRISI sped up my steps, walking past the sneering maids without looking at them once. We walked along another path for nearly twenty minutes in comforting silence. The cool wind helped clear my head a little, but the disturbing weight in my chest remained. As we looped back around toward the main castle entrance, the doors of the council room swung open. A group of five old men dressed in fur-lined robes walked out into the corridor. They were the pack elders, their faces grim and stern as they discussed official business.Chloe and I stopped near the side of the hallway to let them pass, bowing our heads slightly out of habit. The oldest elder, a man with long gray hair and a thick beard named Lord Garon, stopped right in front of me. The other four elders paused beside him, their cold, judgmental eyes sweeping over my simple dress."So this is Ethan Willow's sister," Lord Garon said, his deep voice echoing loudly."Yes, Lord Garon," another elder muttered with disgust. "The girl
IRISI slid down the back of the door, my knees hitting the floor with a quiet thud.My right hand went up to touch my lips. They were still tingling and sore from the harsh, violent way Tristan had kissed me. My cheek burned, and deep inside, my chest felt completely hollow.A single tear slipped down my cheek, dropping on the blue dress I was still wearing.I couldn't wipe away the image of the hall from my mind. I kept seeing the sudden shift in everyone's eyes—the utter disgust and burning hatred from those nobles the exact second Cassian screamed out my brother's name. They had looked at me as if I was the one who had actually sent someone to kill their king.I didn't know anything about Ethan's plan. I had literally saved Tristan’s life by warning him about the wine, but none of that mattered. In their eyes, I was just a Willow, and that meant I was guilty by default. Not even Tristan had believed me. He had used my bloodline as an excuse to grab me, accuse me, and force hi
"Please," Abby begged from the floor, clutching his broken arm. "We were just greedy, Alpha! Forgive us!""I don't forgive," I said coldly.I didn't give them another second. I snapped Cassian's neck with a quick kick, then pulled my blade and cut Abby down before he could scream again. Blood pooled on the floor."Clean this mess up," I ordered Jonathan, wiping my hands on a cloth from a nearby table. "The event is over."~The carriage ride back up to the main castle was suffocating.Iris sat on the bench across from me, her body stiff and her face turned toward the window. She hadn't said a single word since we left the hall, and her complete silence was grating on my nerves. My chest burned with rage. Ethan Willow dared to send assassins into my home, and now his sister was sitting right in front of me, looking like an innocent victim. When the carriage stopped in the courtyard, I stepped out first and walked up to my bedchamber without waiting for her.I was standing near the
