The manager’s expression shifted sharply, panic flickering across his face as he blurted, “You’re talking nonsense. I’m not your grandfather’s lapdog.”

Franklin scowled, ignoring him entirely. He turned on his heel and marched out. The door slammed behind him.

Manager Anthony looked over at Christy, at a loss for words. Before he could say anything, Christy stepped forward.

“Thank you so much, Manager Anthony. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you showing up. You’ve been a great help today.” Her voice was soft but sincere, gratitude creasing her features.

He only nodded, worry clouding his gaze, then left with the company guards.

When the office finally quieted, Christy exhaled in relief. She sat for a long moment, thinking, then picked up her phone. She set it down. Picked it up again. Set it down. She couldn’t quite make up her mind.

The phone suddenly rang.

Seeing the caller ID, her chest tightened. She hesitated, then answered. “Hello, baby,” she said softly.

After Edna fed him, Yukon lay back on the bed, scowling. “If that motherfucker Rex hadn’t taken me by surprise, he wouldn’t have won. I’m going to make him regret what he did to me. He sent me to a hospital—I’ll send his sorry ass to a morgue.”He tried to clench his jaw, but pain lanced through it. “Argh!”Edna patted his chest gently. “Sorry,” she murmured. Her softness only fueled his anger. “Do you think Rex would’ve won if I’d been ready for the fight?”Edna saw the hope in his eyes. She knew the truth would wound his pride—and probably make him resent her—so she soothed him instead. “You’re stronger than him. You’re the better man. He’s got nothing on you. If there hadn’t been any foul play, he wouldn’t stand a chance trading blows.”Yukon nodded. “You’re right. If I hadn’t gotten drunk the night before I went to the company, he wouldn’t have even landed a punch. That bastard took advantage of my state. This isn’t over. I’m going to make him regret messing with me.”“Yes, yes,”

Yukon stepped out of the car and strode across the road toward Rex’s apartment, not bothering to check for traffic.Tires screeched. A horn blared. “Motherfucker! Go die somewhere else!” a driver shouted out the window.Yukon didn’t flinch. He kept walking until he stood before Rex’s door. He lifted his fist to pound on it—then stopped, jaw tight.“We’ll see at the company tomorrow,” he muttered through his teeth. He turned on his heel, went back to his car, and sped away.At home, the thought of Allison with Rex—imagining them wrapped up in each other—burned through him.“Sir, dinner is r—”“Get lost! Fuck off!” Yukon roared. The housekeeper, stunned, retreated without another word.Yukon snatched a couple of bottles and trudged upstairs. He called Allison. No answer. He poured a glass of liquor and knocked it back, then called again. Still nothing.“You left me for that bastard,” he whispered to the empty room. “I love you, Allison. Why would you choose Rex over me? I’m better than

Rex’s face fell, but he ignored Yukon’s jab and continued, “We’ve made some budgetary adjustments. It’s also wise to explore alternatives, so if we’re caught in a dilemma, we can quickly activate Plan B. And we should watch out for saboteurs—”“Who’s a greater saboteur than you?” Yukon cut in with a sneer. “Going behind people’s backs to castigate them. You’re the chief beneficiary of chaos.”Around the table, board members exchanged uneasy glances. No one dared whisper; the manager and the deputy were openly at each other’s throats.Rex turned to Yukon, weary of the constant sniping. “If you’re not here to help us move this project forward, you can leave.”Yukon reclined, wearing an easy, mocking confidence. “After hearing your presentation, I’m unimpressed. I’m saving this company from a loss. We will not accept this business plan as a working tool. It needs a redo—a thorough cross-examination—and a full market analysis before you bring another plan.”Rex’s patience snapped. “You ma

Yukon was so shocked he could only stand and stare at Allison and Rex. His chest tightened. He took a step toward them, thought better of it, then turned and walked away, his face knotted with anger. He drove home, collapsed onto the couch, and lit a cigarette, sinking into brooding silence. His jaw clenched, his eyes hardened. Eventually, he rose, went to his bedroom, and forced himself to sleep. By morning, the moment he was out of bed, he dressed quickly for work.At the company, he didn’t head to his own office. Instead, he went straight to Rex’s. He opened the door and stood there, staring in cold silence.Rex glanced up, lifted an eyebrow, and gave him an askance look. “What’s up, man?”Yukon slammed the door. Rex frowned at the display. Yukon crossed the room one deliberate step at a time, braced his hands on Rex’s desk, and narrowed his eyes.“Why are you acting like this, man?” Rex asked, his frown deepening.“Who is your girlfriend, Rex?” Yukon shot back.Rex didn’t flinch.

Rex spread his arms and said, “I wish you good luck.”He turned to head into his bedroom when Yukon asked, “Where are you going?”Rex shrugged. “To sleep, of course. I have to be in the office tomorrow, and I don’t plan on being late. You get it?”Yukon’s face tightened. He stood abruptly, anger flaring. “I hate the way you treat me. You know I’m heartbroken. Instead of consoling me, you’re just walking off to sleep. I’m starting to doubt if you’re even my friend.”Without waiting for a response, Yukon stormed out. Rex didn’t stop him or call him back; he simply watched as Yukon left and walked out the door.Yukon climbed into his car and drove off. On the way home, the video on Edna’s phone kept replaying in his mind. He couldn’t stop wondering how Allison had gotten it. Two possibilities nagged at him: either she had paid his gateman to get it, or she had walked in on him during the act—without him ever realizing it.His grip tightened on the steering wheel, his expression hardening

Allison had barely finished saying “Shut your mouth, Yukon,” when he doubled down, voice shaking with a confidence he didn’t feel. “That isn’t true. That’s impossible. You know I’d never cheat on you. You’re just—lying. If you don’t love me anymore and you’ve seen—”She refused to hear another word. Her hand dove into her handbag; the phone was out, her thumbs moving quick and sure. Then she thrust it at him.“Look.”Yukon took the phone with trembling fingers. The screen glowed. A video. His bedroom. Him and Edna. The blood drained from his face.Allison’s laugh was a blade. “Stop denying it. I watched you screw another woman in your own bed. I didn’t confront you then because I knew you’d never change.”His eyes darted, then hardened with a desperate idea. He deleted the video, and the guilt spilled out in a rush. “Allison, I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. It was a mistake—I’ll fix it. I’ll call her. I’ll—”“Give me my phone,” she snapped. He held on, pleading. “Please. Th
