Emilia

I couldn’t stop thinking about the pill bottle.

It sat inside the bottom drawer of my bedside table, wrapped in a clean handkerchief.

I had checked it three times that afternoon.

Same bottle.

Same handwritten dosage.

Same scratched out label.

And the same uncomfortable feeling in my stomach.

Something was wrong.

I just didn’t know what.

I could have confronted Leo again, but I wasn’t ready to accuse him of anything. For all I knew, the medication had a perfectly reasonable explanation.

  • MY BULLY, MY PATIENT    The man behind the name

EmiliaI couldn’t stop thinking about the pill bottle. It sat inside the bottom drawer of my bedside table, wrapped in a clean handkerchief.I had checked it three times that afternoon.Same bottle.Same handwritten dosage.Same scratched out label. And the same uncomfortable feeling in my stomach.Something was wrong.I just didn’t know what.I could have confronted Leo again, but I wasn’t ready to accuse him of anything. For all I knew, the medication had a perfectly reasonable explanation.Still, there was one thing I couldn’t ignore. It wasn’t listed in his medical records. That alone bothered me.I closed the drawer and stepped away.My mind needed a break. So I left my room. The estate was strangely quiet at night.During the day, there were always people moving through the halls, housekeepers, security, assistants, doctors. At night, everyone disappeared.I wandered downstairs and followed the faint light coming from the kitchen.I stopped at the doorway.Leo was there.Alone.

  • MY BULLY, MY PATIENT    My childhood crush

EmiliaBy the fourth morning, I had learned that Leo Vance had an impressive talent for making a simple rehabilitation session feel like a personal war.He hated stretching. He hated resistance bands. He hated the stationary bike. Most of all, he hated me telling him that he couldn’t do something.Unfortunately for him, that happened often.“Ten more,” I said.Leo stared at me from across the rehabilitation room.“Absolutely not.”“Nine.”“You weren’t listening.”“Eight.”“I’m serious.”“Seven.”He glared.I smiled.“Six.”“Do you enjoy this?”“Very much.”“You’re enjoying torturing an injured man?”“I’m enjoying watching a professional athlete discover that his muscles aren’t in charge anymore.”He muttered something under his breath.“What was that?”“Nothing.”“Good. Six more.”He groaned and continued the exercise.I tried not to smile. The truth was, I was beginning to understand him.Leo didn’t actually hate rehabilitation. He hated feeling weak.He hated needing someone. And he

  • MY BULLY, MY PATIENT    Get Out While You Still Can

LeoPain had become my new alarm clock. Not the sharp, unbearable kind. The worse kind. The dull ache that settled deep inside my knee the moment I tried to move, reminding me that my body wasn’t mine anymore.I stared at the ceiling, willing the pain to disappear. It didn’t.“Damn it.”I swung my legs over the side of the bed, ignoring the protest from my injured knee.Three months.Three months since that hit during the conference finals.Three months since every sports analyst in the country started asking the same question.Would Leo Vance ever play hockey again? No one knew the truth. Not my teammates. Not my fans. Not even the media camped outside the estate every other day.Officially, I was recovering from a minor injury.Unofficially…One wrong move could end my career forever.I limped toward the window and looked across the lake.Morning fog rolled over the water, peaceful enough to make anyone forget the pressure waiting outside these gates.I couldn’t.Not for a second.M

  • MY BULLY, MY PATIENT    I’m Not Leaving

Emilia“This is going to be a disaster.”Leo’s words lingered in the rehabilitation room long after the silence settled.Grace Bennett didn’t even blink.“It doesn’t have to be.”“It will be if she stays.”“I’m staying.”The words slipped out before I had time to second-guess them.Three pairs of eyes turned toward me.Leo actually laughed.“You’ve always been stubborn.”I folded my arms.“And you’ve always been arrogant.”His smile vanished. For a brief second, I saw something flash across his face.Regret.It disappeared almost instantly.Grace cleared her throat.“I’ll leave the two of you to discuss your working relationship.”Leo shot her a look.“There is no working relationship.”“There will be.”Without another word, Grace walked out.Arthur followed her.The door clicked shut. Now it was just us.For the first time in eleven years.Neither of us spoke.Leo leaned against the treatment table, watching me with narrowed eyes.I’d spent the drive here imagining this moment.I’d i

  • MY BULLY, MY PATIENT    The Man I Hated Most

EmiliaI didn’t sleep.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw two faces. My father’s.And Leo Vance’s.One had died believing the world would eventually discover the truth. The other had spent three years of high school making sure I wanted to disappear. Now fate expected me to help him.I almost called Grace Bennett before sunrise to quit.Almost.But every time my finger hovered over her number, another notification flashed across my phone.Medical Board Requests Additional Evidence.Clinic Terminates Employment Contract.Sponsor Withdraws from Charity Program Featuring Dr. Emilia Brooks.By seven o’clock that morning, I had my answer.I couldn’t afford pride. Not anymore. The black SUV waiting outside my apartment looked more like it belonged to a diplomat than a patient.A tall man in a tailored black suit stepped out and opened the rear door.“Dr. Brooks?”“Yes.”“I’m Arthur Mills.”His voice was deep and professional.“I’ll be driving you to the Vance Estate.”He reached for my suit

  • MY BULLY, MY PATIENT    One Last Chance

EmiliaI stared at my phone long after the call ended.A confidential job offer. The words sounded too good to be true. After today, no reputable clinic would hire me. My inbox was already filling with termination notices from organizations I’d once dreamed of working with. My professional social media pages were flooded with insults. Complete strangers had decided I was guilty before any investigation had even begun. One phone call couldn’t change that.Could it?My apartment felt unusually quiet when I finally walked through the front door. It was a modest one-bedroom space above an old bakery, the kind of place that smelled faintly of fresh bread every morning. Normally, it comforted me.Today, it felt suffocating.I dropped the cardboard box from the hospital beside the couch and sank onto the floor. On top of the box sat the framed photograph I always kept on my office desk.Dad.Dr. Daniel Brooks smiled confidently at the camera in his white coat, a stethoscope draped around his
