I woke up the next morning with a generally sore body.

But I felt good.

It was more of the feeling you got after intense physical exertion, rather than the one you got when someone twice as heavy as you beat you into a pulp.

That was a little thing to be happy about.

I stood up and stretched. My muscles felt tight, but it was otherwise pleasant.

I looked around and most of everyone else were still asleep.

Rowena, Oisin and Roman were huddled under the same tree.

Orlaith snored softly close by.

I guessed that Kerrigan was in a tree top somewhere. Life was generally easier for eagles.

I turned to Morning and her eyes shot open as soon as my gaze landed on her.

There was that split second where Morning seemed to forget that she was among friends. But it didn't last for long.

I could still clearly remember how Morning had tried to kill me multiple times when I met her.

We had definitely come far from then.

I looked around and I couldn't find Carter. I could only guess that h

“Bait?” Carter asked. He was the first person to react to my words. “What do you mean by bait?” Rowena asked. “I mean that someone would have to accidentally run into the invocates and then lead a group of them away.” I said. I used my hands to emphasize the word 'accidentally' as a way to show that there would be nothing accidental about the bait running into the hunters. “But of course the effect will be a lot better if we can lead multiple groups away.” I thought out loud. “So if we have multiple people acting as bait then it might be possible for us to separate the invocates into three teams.” I said. “Do you really believe that the hunters will chase after three different people in three different directions with all their might?” Carter scoffed. I nodded, agreeing with him. Carter seemed a little shocked with how quickly I agreed with him but he regained his composure immediately. I saw it of course, but I wasn’t going to comment. My mind was occupied with other though

“Yes. It might actually work.” “What’s that?” Rowena asked. I figured out that I said my thoughts out loud. “Oh. I just came up with a plan.” I said. “We need to split them up to take them. That would significantly reduce their attacking power because they were trained to coordinate together. But if we do that then we will still be at a disadvantage. Three versus seven are very bad odds. But there’s a way to fix that.” I said. “What exactly are you thinking?” Carter asked. He was leaning forward from his seated position and he had a deep look of anticipation on his face. Everyone turned to him and his eyes widened. “Oh. Sorry I forgot. It’s not my business. But continue what you were saying.” Carter said. He leaned back and composed himself. Then he adopted an aloof expression that made him look as if he wasn’t interested in the topic. I glanced away from him. Even though I could see that he was clearly interested in the topic and that he was only pretending otherwise, I

I watched Morning for a few seconds.I had already decided to ask her about her shifting earlier. If she agreed to shift and assist in this operation, then it would give us an incredible advantage. She could single-handedly tip the scales in a tough situation. From the strength I had already seen Morning casually exhibit without even shifting, I was sure she was a powerful wolf. She could easily be the strongest wolf I had ever encountered. Of course, my experience was limited since my personal encounters with wolves were mostly limited to low-level packs. In high-level packs, the overall wolf strength would simply be higher. That was just how it was.So when I turned to Morning, I wanted to ask her if she was willing to shift to help with the plan. She could easily team up with someone less prone to combat and be a key piece in my ‘divide and conquer' tactic. But as soon as my gaze landed on her, she froze. It could have simply been the case that she wasn’t expecting me to address he

I gently lowered Oisin to a seating position on the ground. By the time I had done so, Rowena was already beside me.She bent down and took Oisin from my hands.“You shouldn’t have pushed yourself so much brother.” Rowena said in a quiet, solemn voice.“I could handle it.” Oisin said in an even lower voice. It turned out that he had regained consciousness already, and he clearly heard his sister’s admonition.I stood up. I wasn’t exactly happy with Oisin’s situation, but I was confident that he would be alright. I was already aware of some details of his ability. Rowena had the same ability too. From my understanding of it, they would fully take in the senses of their spirit animal counterpart. They could choose to mutually share senses or just adopt the sense of another. The specific options dictated the backlash.I looked at the sky. Kerrigan was currently gliding back towards us.It was a good thing that the eagle wouldn’t suffer much backlash from the move. Otherwise, if Kerrigan

I couldn’t help but notice Morning’s solemn expression as we all are.In truth, I had been secretly watching her ever since she came to my defense against Carter. I even noticed her watching me at one point. It all confused me. Wasn’t she angry with me? Why was she watching me secretly and why did she come to my defense when Carter laughed? My confusion lead to curiosity. And my curiosity came to a boiling point. When I coupled it with how much I wanted to apologize for what I did earlier, I just couldn’t keep myself away from her.I was a lot more confident as I approached her this time. She hadn’t even been looking at me earlier, but after her conflicting actions I came to a conclusion that made she wasn’t so averse to idea of me approaching her.Morning ended up being so deep in thought that I was able to approach her without her managing to notice me. I had considerable skill when it came to stealth, but it still shouldn’t be this easy to sneak up on a wolf. I wondered what she wa

When I returned to the camp, I couldn’t bring myself to look Phoenix in the eye.I had decided to actively lie to him. I hadn’t done it yet, but I knew I would if he asked that question. It seemed like an easy decision at first, but the longer I spent around him during the night trip, the more guilty I felt.Even when I ignored him, he still gazed at me kindly. I could see when he watched me from the corner of my eye. And I watched him at all other times. He had such a kind face. And I knew that it wasn’t just because he couldn’t be aggressive. I had seen him back at the inn. He could be intimidating when he wanted to. He just wanted to be kind to us.That was why I couldn’t take it when Carter laughed at Phoenix’s dream.I wanted to smack him unconscious, but I managed to barely restrain myself. But I didn’t quite understand Phoenix though. As much as I wanted to forget it, I had to accept that he was human. But his behavior was so strange for a human. He said he wanted to take down
