I felt the silver blade as it cut through my bonds.
I looked up in confusion.
"What?" I suddenly found the strength to speak.
What was he doing?
He crouched down.
"Shush. The hunters are nearby. If you make noise, they'll hear you."
I was confused but I nodded my head. I stared at him intently.
He had a strong jaw and a criminally handsome face. But there was no doubt he was a human. That also meant he was a hunter.
Right?
He stood up.
"I'll be back. I need to secure the perimeter."
'Wait! Don't leave me here alone!' I thought, but I couldn't say the words.
He walked out of the cave.
Then there was complete silence.
Then everything hit me all at once.
The wolfsbane, the silver, the fall, the blood loss.
After so much, I shouldn't even be alive.
My eyes drooped as if my body agreed that I should be dead.
I struggled to maintain consciousness. What if something happened? What if the hunter came back and had his way with me when I was out cold?
A part of me would almost welcome the warmth. I felt a chill permeate my naked body.
But then the worst thought entered my mind. What if I didn't fall unconscious, but I died instead?
I fought the darkness with all my remaining strength. I tried to stand up, but I fell flat on the cave ground.
My hand went to my injured right shoulder.
The blood pooled on the ground.
I reached forward with my hand and then I blacked out.
…
I woke up to the bird song.
As my vision cleared, I brought my hand to my head.
I had a head ache.
I sat up and looked around me.
I was surrounded by rocky walls, and I was sitting on a straw bed.
'How did I get here?' I wondered.
Then I remembered.
My hand moved to my right shoulder.
It was covered with a bandage. And my body was covered in a long blouse and shorts.
I was naked when I passed out.
My other minor wounds were also treated, and they were covered in small bandages.
I felt clean. Meaning I was no longer covered in blood.
But my shoulder had probably been broken in the fall.
I tried to stand up and to my surprise I was able to. Some of my strength had returned.
That meant that someone had removed the silver from my body and I had passed out long enough for the wolfsbane to wear off.
That took at least three days.
But I had only been given the poison the night before my execution.
Had I been out for two whole days!?
I quickly scrambled out of the bed.
The hunter had abducted me. I didn't understand why he had treated my wounds, but that still meant that he had touched my naked body himself. And I had been with him for days, unconscious and helpless.
He could have done anything at all to me.
I looked around the cave room. There was another straw bed on the ground and there was a leather bag beside it.
I moved to the bag and emptied it out.
Two guns fell to the ground, along with a metal badge and other random items like a pen.
I stared at the gun for a few seconds.
Touching human weapons was forbidden to all wolves. We weren't meant to expose ourselves to be corrupted by evil humans.
But I could use the weapon.
My wounds had been treated, but I was still walking around with a broken shoulder. I could still remember how strong the hunter had been the night before and his sword was probably with him.
I could use the advantage of guns.
I reached down for the gun and grabbed it.
My skin sizzled, and I quickly dropped it with a yelp.
I grabbed my hand, ignoring the sharp pain in my shoulder.
My hand was imprinted with the marks from the gun's handle.
The gun was pure silver.
I was shocked.
Silver was rare, even for humans. Yet this hunter somehow had two guns made entirely of silver.
There was no doubt he was a hunter now.
But he was no ordinary hunter. And he had saved me too, for reasons that I couldn't understand.
A smell wafted across my nose.
I turned in surprise. It was food.
My stomach rumbled in response.
I had been out for a long time, and now I felt the hunger that came as a result of it.
I moved towards the smell but stopped in my tracks.
It was most probably from the hunter. Did I want to meet him just for food?
But then he had me alone, unconscious and naked for a long time. If he wanted to hurt me, he already had all the chances to do so.
I had to admit to myself that he had no intentions of doing that. At least not for now. He had gone through the trouble of treating my wounds. Surely he wouldn't let me starve to death now.
In the end, my hunger helped me decide.
I walked to the entrance of the cave. It was not very big, and it was easy to navigate, especially with the smell guiding me.
I walked out of the cave and the sunlight hit me. It was early in the morning.
The smell came from the side and there was no one in front of the cave.
I stared into the forest in front of me.
I could run. He wasn’t here to stop me and I could escape.
But where would I go?
It was insane and unbelievable, but something made me stay.
I turned around and found where he was. He was bent over a small clay pot, without a shirt. His makeshift fire stoked the soup.
Then he turned to me.
If I thought he was handsome when I saw him under the moonlight, then words couldn’t describe him now.
His eyes sparkled under the sunlight.
His well-sculpted muscles rippled as he stood up and smiled at me.
My heart tightened and something deeper within resonated with it.
As I looked into his eyes, I felt the bond-the real reason I hadn’t run.
My wolf howled and I knew.
The wolf hunter was my second chance mate.
Another migraine hit me.But luckily it was a lot weaker than the last one. I got off easily as I only had to push against the wall with one hand for support. After I waited for five seconds, most of the pain receded.Worry flashed through my mind. Everyday it seemed like my condition wasn’t getting any better. I was too weak to do anything and I had been in a coma for awhile.I had been a constant burden to Morning and the others, because they had to carry me just to get by.What if I never got better? It never crossed my mind to be worried for myself. Ever since the day I walked away from the church, I had been ready to die for what was right. That was no concern to me.But I was scared that I would die before I could complete my mission. Even with many months of being an outlaw, I had not gotten any great achievement. I had made little progress in my mission. Things were moving forward, especially now. But what if I never recovered. It would be a cruel joke from Sol.I was more th
Morning immediately exploded into a tirade of angry words.I cringed inwardly because I immediately recognized my poor choice of words. Morning had been placing emphasis on the need for me to take a break for awhile now. I could now confirm that she wouldn’t feel good when I ended up doing the opposite of that.“I told you not to push yourself!” Morning exclaimed, confirming my thoughts.Of course I was sorry for how I made her feel.I understood what she meant when she told me not to push myself, but it was just an understanding of the words themselves.Ever since the first day I could remember, which was about thirteen years ago, things have never been easy. From then on I constantly had to push myself to keep going. All my years in the church emphasized this. Even though all my achievements there ended up being worthless to me now, I had still pushed myself to get them. To be the best. And my current mission was the most important. I knew that it depended on me to save all the live
Earlier that evening.I made sure that my entire group were ahead of me on the flight of stairs. It wasn’t very difficult because they all seemed to forget about my condition. Of course that had a lot to do with my own efforts.Even as I looked up the seemingly impossibly high flight of stairs, my head banged. The headache seemed to come and go with unpredictable intervals in between. The innkeeper was helping carry Rowena up the stairs and Morning was focused on him.I took in a deep breath. I couldn’t linger at the bottom for long unless Morning and the others would notice. And I completely refused the idea of Morning carrying me up the stairs in her arms like a baby.I took the first step, it was difficult instantly. I gritted my teeth and pushed past the pain. I kept a steady pace so as not to alert any of them as I followed behind. Every step was difficult.I needed an anchor to escape the pain. My eyes went to Morning and I focused on her hair. It was midnight black and luscious
“Phoenix are you okay?” I said with my heart in my mouth.Oisin took a step forward but Phoenix raised his hand and stopped him.“I’m fine.” He said. I helped him stand back up.He placed on hand on his head. “I just got a little dizzy there.” He said.I remembered how I had let him climb the stairs here by himself. I hadn’t been paying attention to him, but he must have struggled and used a lot of energy to climb the steps.Anger flared up within me.“Where you pushing yourself earlier?” I asked in a low dangerous tone.Phoenix turned to me with slight surprise on his face. He hadn’t been expecting anger from me just now and I could tell.“It was nothing. How useless am I if I can’t even climb a flight if stairs?” Phoenix asked.“I thought I told you not to push yourself!” He was infuriating me now, why didn’t he listen.“Must you prove that you’re strong!?” I prodded. He had pushed himself so much. I found it admirable, but now I couldn’t bare it if it cost him so much. Why couldn’
The innkeeper examined our group.I held Rowena against my body. I had walked to the inn with her directly strung over my shoulder. It had been a tough walk but I was able to pull it off. I had a thin layer of sweat over my skin. As I entered the inn, I let her feet drop to the ground. I didn’t want to make it look too odd that I was carrying her all by myself.Phoenix stood in the front, he had dropped off Oisin’s hand after we stepped into the inn. I didn’t protest because I knew he was just going to talk to the inn keeper.Roman stood behind with Oisin. The inn keeper had a complicated expression on his face, as if he wasn’t quite expecting a group like ours.I doubted that our worn out clothes were helping his impression. He dropped the glass he had been cleaning and chewed on the stick in his mouth.I had to wonder how many glasses he had to clean. I had definitely been gone for over an hour and most of the nighttime drunks had already retired to their rooms.“What do you mean b
I followed behind Orlaith and Oisin as they moved to Phoenix. The bear was already carrying Rowena across his back. It was a sad contrast to when Rowena had been vibrant and riding on his back. But at least she wasn’t dead yet.Phoenix moved from the tree he was resting against and wobbled slightly. I wouldn’t have noticed if I wasn’t watching specifically for it because he corrected his stance almost immediately. The glimpse of his true state that I had caught was enough to tell me all I needed to know.He was still very much sick. Or whatever was wrong with him.“Alright, let’s start moving now.” Phoenix said.I moved over to him, passing Orlaith without looking at him.“Orlaith is going to carry you too until we reach the edge of the forest.” I reminded him.Phoenix nodded his head gravely. That’s fine but I’ll walk the rest of the way.“No you won’t.” I said.He raised an eyebrow. “How will we manage that? You’ll be carrying Rowena so you can’t help me.” Phoenix said.“Oisin will
