“So where exactly are we going?” Rowena asked as we walked through the woods.

Roman was walking beside me and hanging close by like he always did. While Oisin was walking ahead, watching Kerrigan, who was flying in the skies above us.

Kerrigan usually acted as our scout, but his usefulness was very limited in a forest with this much of a thick covering obstructing the skies. There was a low chance that the eagle would actually spot anything in time to warn us, but I was going to use every means at my disposal to make sure that we remained safe anyway. It didn’t matter to me if they were of only limited effectiveness.

Then Orlaith was walking behind Rowena and me. The bear was acting as our vanguard. That made it, so I was only worried about us getting flanked. But it was still good to cover as much of our position as possible while we traveled.

“You didn’t hear me, did you?” Rowena asked.

“Oh, I heard you. We are going back to Barley. That was where my last lead on the movement of the

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   PHOENIX

He was angry when he returned.More angry than I had ever seen him.He beat me up, even though I had been working hard. He seemed to forget that I was a little boy and he didn’t care. Then he drew his sword.By then, I knew that killed for the church, for the god he wanted me to love. He had told me about wolves and other creatures that the church exterminated. Monsters against the order of the sun. They thrived under the cursed moon.He always wore his sword when he went out.But I had never seen him draw it, even on the day my village burned down. He drew it now.I was already on the floor, but I tried to crawl away from him. I only managed to slip pathetically and fall on my back.He strode forward with his sword raised over head. There was a firm look of determination on his face.I hardly ever talked to him in those days. We kept our conversations almost fully pragmatic. He would tell me what work I needed to do and how to do it. He never asked me if I understood and I never comp

“What are you?” I asked again, bolder this time.Oisin turned to me, and looked at me carefully.“You don’t need to know that.” He said.I noted that he no longer sounded like a playful thirteen year old.I could still feel the warmth coming off Rowena from behind me. Grass continued to die around us.“I do.” I said. I felt hurt that Phoenix had never told me. Now, I was sure that he had known. All the strange signs that I had ignored had not surprised him.Like how strangely strong Oisin was. If he was a wolf he would never have awakened at such a young age. Even if he somehow had, I couldn’t smell any signs of wolf from him.No, he was something else. Something not human.Oisin turned to his sister. His face fell again.“I’m not sure she will survive this. It’s a spell we are never supposed to use.” He said. “A spell? Are you a witch?” I asked.I had heard of witches. Just stories in my pack. I had never really thought about them. So I had come to no decision on whether I thought

I couldn’t recall what happened the rest of the night. But the road had been bumpy and I felt cold. I found myself craving the warmth of that fire. Then under the cover of the caravan, I cried.I cried because I knew that I had lost something vital that day. I knew that I would never see my village or my parents again. It was a true understanding of the concept of death, even if I had no idea back then. It was an understanding that a part of my life was gone forever. The friends I had played with, the songs of the village, everything was gone.He woke me up later, after an unknown period of time.“Get up.” He said.I opened my eyes and stared at him.It was still nighttime but the moon shone down brightly on us.He had let down his hood so I saw his face for the first time.He had a hard face and a full beard. But his head was completely bald.I knew in that moment that I would get no hugs from him. Not as my mother had given me.I got up without him having to ask twice. He took my li

I couldn’t believe my eyes.Rowena was crouched over Phoenix with a look of utter concentration in her eyes. That wasn’t what shocked me.Rowena had began to radiate a bright green color from her entire body. It was as if she had a green fire burning from within her and struggling to get out. The light escaped through her skin and every pore in her body.As she kept her contact with Phoenix's back, something even more spectacular began to happen. It was as if the light was spreading from her to Phoenix. We were in a field of grass among the trees. And all the grass around Rowena began to wither.A ring of brown death grew from her in a perfect circle. The grass closest to her and Phoenix died first. Right before my eyes they lost their lush green coloring and dried out. Their leaves bent and fell to the ground. The circle of death continued to grow around her.Phoenix’s wound stopped bleeding at first. Then the edges of the cut began to close. It was happening slowly but still fast en

I felt the cut across my back and I immediately knew that I was done for. Worst of all, I had my silver guns with me.I fell to my knees and stared at Morning. She had a look of horror on her face as he reached for me with her hand.I felt like smiling but I couldn’t.At least she was safe. So I hadn’t been useless.I closed my eyes and waited for the killing blow I knew would be coming from behind. But it didn’t come. I felt a vague sense of frustration. What was wrong with the damn invocate? Didn’t he know that I didn’t have all day? Why the hell was he wasting time?I had no idea how long I remained on my knees, but I grew very tired soon.I decided that it might be a good idea to lie down. After all it wasn’t like I had slept the night before.Maybe Rowena was right, I should try getting in my rest more often. It probably wasn’t very healthy to stay awake for days on end.As soon as I decided to lie down, I fell face down into the grass. The impact force made me see all black fo

Another scream joined mine as Phoenix fell to his knees. The hunter behind him raised his sword for the killing blow and all I could do was to reach out with my hands. Phoenix was too far away from me for me to do anything and the world seemed to slow down as the sword was moving to kill him. In that moment, I was acutely aware of my powerlessness. All my life, I had never been able to save anyone. Not my mother, not my father. All I had brought with me was pain and death. I felt truly worthless. As the hunter swung his sword, an arrow flew and embedded itself deep into his neck. Everything was so vivid to me. I noticed the dark green color of the arrow. It looked like a fresh tree branch or rather that of a sapling. I also noticed the contrast as the arrow burst into the neck of the hunter with a splash of bright red blood. The hunter reached for his neck with his free hand. His sword fell from the other hand. The hunter moved his hand to his neck to staunch the blood
