5. Always in Danger

Melody had just gotten into the car when a gunshot sounded so hard that it hit the car they were in. Ben, who looked annoyed, immediately took his gun and got ready to leave.

Mark, who was sitting beside Melody, only took a deep breath as he looked back. When Melody followed Mark's line of sight, she froze when she saw a small crack in the windshield of the car they were in.

"Relax; this car is bulletproof, so you're safe here," Mark said casually.

Melody still had her eyes wide open when she saw Ben having a shootout with a group of people outside.

They had just stepped out of the Mark family's main house when this incident occurred. Is mafia life really like this? They should continue to fight whenever the need arises. Life was not something they could respect; why could it be so easy to kill someone? Melody really couldn't believe this.

"You experience this every day?" Melody spoke slowly to Mark, who was currently busy with the cell phone in his hand.

"Yeah, it's nothing." Mark then smiled.

Melody's forehead furrowed at Mark's words.

"We would almost die if we got into the car too late!" shrieked the girl, annoyed.

"They are just amateur shooters; if they were snipers, we would be dead before touching this car!" Mark glanced at Melody, then winked.

Melody gaped at Mark's words. How could he say something so carefree? They were talking about their lives, right?

"Mark, aren't you tired? I mean, you could lose your life at any moment. Aren't you tired of living life like this?" Melody looked down at Mark's beady eyes, which were as sharp as an eagle's.

Mark smiled faintly; he then turned towards Melody and stared at the girl's beautiful face.

"There's no time to be tired; I have so many things to take care of," Mark said quietly.

Melody covered her mouth tightly. She remembered Ben's words the other day about the burden that Mark had to bear. Maybe the man suppressed all the fear and fatigue he felt to be strong enough to lead the Black Eagles.

"Why don't you bring some people to look after you, like Julian? I think Ben could just be overwhelmed by all your enemies."

Mark immediately laughed so hard at Melody's question. He wouldn't blame Melody for her stupid questions; the girl was still very innocent and didn't know anything about mafia life.

"Going alone with Ben is much safer than bringing lots of people like Julian. And don't think Ben will be overwhelmed by small rats like them; they are the ones who are always overwhelmed by Ben," Mark said casually.

Melody nodded in understanding. She believed Mark one hundred percent because soon after, Ben got in the car and contacted the rest of the Black Eagles to clean up their bodies.

"You killed everyone?" Melody asked carefully.

"I have no choice," Ben said as he started the car's engine.

"Can't you just be forgiven, huh? They must have a family." Melody looked at Ben, scared.

Hearing Melody's words, both Ben and Mark immediately turned their heads and stared sharply at the girl. Melody would remember; she wouldn't ask something like that again.

"If we let them off the hook now, they will keep coming and trying to kill us. Ben and I might get away, but what if they shoot you? Won't you be the one to lose?" Mark said it casually.

Hearing Mark's words, Melody's eyes widened, and her heart was beating very fast. Mark was right; what if she was shot? Just imagining it made Melody's body feel weak.

"Look at your pale face. So, you still want us to spare them and let them get away with it?" he snapped.

"No, just kill them," Melody said very slowly.

Mark laughed with satisfaction at Melody's answer. Seeing his boss laugh like that seemed to surprise Ben. Mark, who rarely smiled, was now made to laugh so hard by Melody. Of course, that is a good thing.

"So, are we going to the warehouse now, or do you want to go home? You look tired today," interrupted Ben, making Mark look at him and think for a moment.

"How far is the warehouse?" asked Mark quietly.

"Not too far, maybe about thirty minutes away," said Ben as he drove his car fast enough to hit the road.

"Go to the warehouse first; I want to finish this task as soon as possible so I can rest all day tomorrow," said Mark quickly.

Ben didn't answer and just took a deep breath.

***

Melody scowled at what was in front of her. She wondered what kind of warehouse they would go to, and it turned out to be a warehouse filled with drugs and weapons. Yeah, she should start getting used to all things illegal. What can she expect from the mafia?

"This is a new type; the price is cheaper, but it's more deadly," said one of the men to Mark.

Mark nodded his head slowly. He then continued to tour the warehouse with the others, while Melody just kept following wherever they went. Even though Mark had asked Melody to just wait in the very comfortable waiting room, Melody didn't want to do it. She was worried that someone might suddenly shoot her and that no one could help her.

Oh, that's so awful. So, it was better to follow Mark wherever he went.

"You don't want to try it, boss?" A man offers Mark a new type of drug.

Melody's eyes glanced sharply at the item that was being pushed toward Mark. The girl's head was immediately filled with all kinds of questions. Is Mark a drug addict?

"Want to die, huh?" said Mark casually.

Melody breathed a sigh of relief; luckily, Mark didn't accept it, which means Mark didn't consume something like that.

Ben, who saw the change in Melody's expression, only smiled faintly.

"Your father likes this stuff," the man said, still trying to persuade Mark.

"Didn't you say this is new stuff? How come dead people like this stuff?" Mark glared at the man.

"Before it is produced in large quantities, your father tries it first to ensure quality."

Mark sighed after hearing the man's explanation. This was the first time he had heard that his father wanted to taste the stuff.

"We're different; I'm sane enough not to consume stuff like that, so don't ever offer me again. As for quality, I'll entrust it all to you!" After saying that, Mark turned around and pulled Melody's sleeve to get out of that place.

"Let's go home," whispered Mark.
