She was pregnant? How could she be pregnant when she was getting married to another man? How was she going to explain this to her soon-to-be husband? Donovan O’Connell was destined to be the heir to his family’s empire but an accident left him disabled and marrying who his grandfather had picked for him might be his only shot at maintaining his position in the family. But there was one problem. He had someone else in his heart now. Someone he had a one-night-stand with.

“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars?!”My friend, Esme let out looking shocked.
I buried my face into my palms, helplessly.
"She needs the surgery urgently. The doctors have been trying their best to keep her stable while my mom and I tried to raise the money, mom’s working two jobs, I’m working three but we’ve only been able to raised 10,000$, if we don’t get her the treatment soon, something bad is going to happen.”
“I know you don’t like talking about your father but right now, his help is needed, have you reached out to him?”
“I’ve swallowed my pride a lot of times and gave him a call, he picked up once and told me not to bother him. After that, he stopped answering my calls.”
“That father of yours is really something. I have some money saved up, I’ll send it to you.”
“Do you have up to $150,000 saved up?”I joked, but it came out, miserably.
My heart was filled with great bitterness at the moment which made me feel like I was losing my mind by the minute.
I found everything unfair. Why me?
Why my family?
Why was my sister going through this?
“$150,000.”Esme let out as if she still didn’t believe the amount.”There has to be something we can do.”
I lifted up my head and stared at her.
“I heard strippers get tipped off nicely if they perform well.”
Her eyes widened at me.”You’re going to be a stripper?”
I nodded.”I’m considering it.”
“Elle, can you even pole dance and no, no. That kind of job doesn’t suit you. Heck, your mother doesn’t even like the bartending job you do here talk more of becoming a stripper.”
“I’m running out of options, Esme.”
“Janelle, what are you doing chitchatting during work hours?!”My manager’s voice sounded.
I flinched as I turned around to face him.
I had come out of the bar to meet up with Esme when she told me she was around.
I had badly needed someone to talk to.
“You should go in now. I’m going to find a way. I’m going to go ask some friends, even take a loan if I have too.”
I nodded and quickly hugged her, then I hurried back into the bar.
I had no faith in what Esme had just said.
Esme was a struggling young girl like me, there was no way she could get that sum of money and I wasn’t expecting her to either.
I was just hoping for a miracle.
My sister, Danica was just fifteen, she had her whole life ahead of her and I had promised her a good life someday.
She’s had a heart disease since she was nine and right now, it has gotten worse.
She needed it operated on and I had to get the money.
But how?
I felt confused, sad, angry at the same time.
Ten minutes later, I was standing beside the bar stand, in a crisp white shirt and a maroon vest, watching wealthy and average looking people at the dance floor.
“Two martinis, one dry, one dirty please.”A man called from one end of the bar.
“Coming up.”I retorted and got to work.
The night dragged by painstakingly slow.
I watched as a woman came to sit at one of the barstool.
She must be in her late thirties or early forties but either way, she looked sophisticated.
She was a beautiful redhead, wearing fashionable white rimmed glasses.
She smiled at me and I nodded, curtly at her.
I couldn’t even force a polite smile back if I wanted to. I was too drained to.
She ordered a frozen margarita with some slices of lemon on the side.
“Why do you look so sad?”She suddenly asked me.
I blinked.”I’m not.”
Even if I wasn’t in the right state of mind at the moment, I still had to abide by the bar’s rules and regulations, to be polite to customers and keep them always happy with our services.
“I know sadness when I see one, honey.”
I nodded, curtly at her again hoping she’d stop trying to make small talks with me.
I didn’t want to share my problems with strangers right now.
“Let me guess, you have money problems?”
“Who doesn’t?” I let out before I could stop myself.
“What if I tell you that I have a job offer that will earn you $50,000 tonight?”
I frowned at her.
According to the bar’s rules, we couldn’t really talk about money with customers.
We accept tips, discreetly.
But talking about this kind of amount was unheard of.
But I was desperate and even if I knew nothing about this woman.
I was interested in her offer.
“How?”
“Firstly, you have to answer this question. Are you a virgin?”
Why was she asking that?
I answered truthfully by nodding.
“Great, and because of that, the amount is doubled, I’ll give you $100,000”
My jaw dropped.
Was she being for real right now?
*JANELLE*I felt myself awakening from sleep but I didn’t want to get up because I felt so comfortable right now.I slowly opened my eyes, for a moment, I felt the breathing of another person.Hard chest moving upwards and downwards. My eyes dilated. I looked up and saw him staring at me.Donovan.My mind went blank for a moment.I quickly moved away from him and held the quilt to my chest.I wasn’t naked though but I felt really exposed right now.“What are you doing here?!”Donovan rolled his eyes and sat up.”This is my room.”I wanted to refute, but then I recalled what Joan had said. This was indeed his room.I really needed to talk to him about sharing the same room.“Didn't you go to celebrate your girlfriend's birthday? Why and when did you come back?" I got out of bed and stood aside.Yesterday, Joan had said he would not come home.I didn’t even know when he came back and got into this bed.How did even I wake up in his arms?I couldn’t have held onto him, could I?When I tho
*JANELLE*I stared at Donovan, nervously.I barely knew him so I didn’t exactly feel safe enough to tell him everything I’ve been through.Or tell him what I wanted from my dad in exchange of marrying him.Since I knew he obviously loved someone else and didn’t want this marriage at all, I will not force myself or him into wanting this marriage. One month was enough.I get something substantial from my dad.We separate and go continue our lives. It was a win-win situation. So I thought of a lie to say to Donovan.“I respect my mom a lot and she had always valued this engagement. She’s not in a really good health right now and I don’t want to disappoint her.”My mom would literally crash out if she heard this lie right now.Donovan eyed me as if he could tell I was lying.“Really?”I met his gaze and my nervousness increased, it was as if he could see through me.His cellphone rang out and I saw his eyes grew tender as he stared at the screen. He said to me in a rush.“Since this marri
‘Hey, you, stop!’I turned and saw Antoine Marchand charging down the court steps, his face tight with anger. To produce a man-child like Pierre Marchand, he must have had parents who’d spoiled him rotten. It turned out the indulgent parent wasn’t his mother, but his father. An hour earlier, Antoine had burst into the courtroom with an entourage of lawyers. It was absurd overkill for a simple assault case. Thanks to their wrangling and, as Lea whispered to me, a bit of grease on the right palms, Pierre had walked away with barely a slap on the wrist.Antoine wasn’t happy. He wanted me locked up for aggravated assault, criminal damage, resisting arrest and every other offence his legal team could dream up.When the prosecutor let me off with a warning and a fine, Antoine went spare. He was angrier than his son, the one I had actually hit.‘Don’t you think you should at least apologise?’ Antoine panted as he stopped in front of me.The tailored suit did nothing to hide his bulging midri
*JANELLE*Kara smirked.”Well, your future husband is…”“The O’Connells are here!”A servant suddenly announced.I turned around and saw a man in a wheelchair, he was being pushed by someone. He had definite facial features and was very handsome.Even if he was sitting in a wheelchair, one could still tell how formidable he was.Was this man the same person who was flirting with that woman at that dressing room?He was the eldest son of the O’Connells family?I recalled that in the fitting room, there was no sign of a wheelchair.I even saw him stand at some point when he told the woman to go get more dress. What was going on right now?I was very sure that Moore family being talked about was mine.It couldn’t be a coincidence.Could it be that this man was pretending to be crippled? Why would he?Gary suddenly shouted at me.”Come over here, Janelle! Come meet your husband-to-be.”I walked over, quietly.“Sir Donovan, this is Janelle.”*********DONOVAN*I frowned as I stared at my wife
*JANELLE*“Go on. Go pick more dresses. Buy anything you want.” I heard the man say to the woman, dotingly.I got startled when I heard a voice behind me.“That room is for VIPs. You can't go in. Use that one.”It was the sales attendant from earlier.“Oh." I nodded at her and headed to the right room. When I was changing my clothes in the fitting room, I kept thinking about the man and the woman. In their conversation, it seemed that they had talked about the Moore family.Could it be about my family? Was that man my soon to be husband?I didn’t see his face though. But I couldn’t help but wonder. After changing my clothes, I came out of the fitting room and looked to the left room. The door had been closed, properly.“You look good, ma’am.”The attendant said to me.I have to admit she had a good taste. Basically, she could pick out the suitable clothes for someone right away.I was on a light blue dress, which made my skin look more white. The lace on my waist outlined my slender wa
*JANELLE*The attendant looked at me from head and toe, as if guessing my size.“Follow me.”She instructed.I followed her and she handed me a light blue dress.“Go try this on in the fitting room.” She said, pointing at it.I took the dress and walked towards the direction she had pointed. As I walked in, I heard a voice.“Donovan, do you really have to marry that girl from the Moore family?”I grimaced. That was my family’s name.Could it be just a coincidence?Curiously, I looked at the fitting room next to mine through the crack on the door.I saw a man sitting on a couch, his back was to my view though.A woman was clearly sitting on his laps, wrapping her arms around his neck. Her voice sounded kitten-like as if she was trying to sound adorable to the man.“I don’t want you to marry her.” She added.*********DONOVAN*I stared at the sad look on Laura’s face.I couldn’t really blame her. After what happened that night, I had promised to do anything she wanted. It was the least I
