princess of flames

*FREYA*

I was furious when Lain snatched the phone away from me just because he was being very paranoid.

"I wasn't done talking to Noah, why on earth would you even hang up?" I asked, feeling irritated while he maintained his signature poker face.

He shrugged carelessly and turned off my phone.

"The Dark Tide are trying to lure you into a fucking trap, and you stupidly fell for it. You've been on the damn phone for three minutes, and I'm sure that allowed them to enough time to have leverage on us," he ranted.

He ran his fingers through his messy hair, blowing out a breath.

There was something strange about this man other than turning into a badass werewolf like in the movies.

It feels like there's something much darker about him, but I can't seem to figure it out.

He turned to glare at me.

"Why are you staring at me?"

I licked my lips, which suddenly felt dry, and narrowed my eyes at him.

"You called me your mate at the club."

The word "mate" instantly made him tense, and it made me uncomfortable too.

I've read a few fictional books about werewolves, and according to my understanding, it usually means like a soulmate.

"It was a mistake," he muttered quietly.

I cocked a brow at him.

"We are mates..." I whispered softly.

I sound very ridiculous at this point.

Lain shook his head negatively.

"Don't be delusional, I don't believe in the mate bond or anything about it. It's just a myth that keeps people together regardless of their flaws."

"How do we break the mate bond?" I asked curiously while his eyes widened.

He remained silent, contemplating what to say to me.

I heard someone yelling outside, and when I looked out the window, I was stunned to see a man wearing combat gear, but he wasn't alone.

Noah was with that man and, worse of all, he was being held at gunpoint.

A gasp escaped my lips, and Lain stood beside me, looking more dazed.

"Stay inside," he ordered, and I stared at him in disbelief.

I scoffed in annoyance.

"I'm not going to hide in here while my best friend is at gunpoint. I won't let anything happen to him."

Lain rolled his eyes at me and opened the door, stepping outside.

They exchanged a few words while I kept my eyes on Noah, who had dry blood on his face.

What the hell did they do to him?

Noah has always been sweet and kind to everyone, he doesn't deserve this.

Lain stood in front of me protectively, and I felt my heart getting warm and fuzzy inside.

I learned that the intruder's name was Drex, and he was still planning to kill me and Lain.

I still couldn't understand why these people were after my life. Was it something I did in my previous life? Because my parents weren't wealthy, and they didn't have many enemies.

This only made me more confused.

Lain squeezed my hand for a brief moment, doing it twice.

I could tell that he was about to do something reckless.

"You'd shoot your best friend?" Lain taunted, a smug smirk playing on his lips.

Drex chuckled wickedly.

"I'd shoot you if it meant saving my own fucking life. Just hand over the girl before things get nasty," he threatened.

Lain wasn't the type to give up, and that's something I've learned about him in these couple of hours.

None of them looked like they'd back down.

Before I could blink, Lain shifted into his brown wolf, and I got on his back. But before we could escape, the gun went off, and I heard Lain whimpering.

The force of the bullet sent me flying and hit against a tree, falling to the ground with a painful thud.

The sharp pain in my lower back made me gasp.

I was definitely going to have a nasty purple bruise later.

My vision was getting spotty, and I saw Lain lying on the ground, unmoving.

Drex let go of Noah, and he fell to the ground.

Our eyes locked, and he looked terrified.

The pain in my heart was getting worse.

Lain got hurt trying to protect me, and if something happens to him, I'll never be able to forgive myself.

Tears filled my eyes when I saw Drex coming towards me.

Then I felt it.

Raw power and anger filled my veins, and I screamed loudly as tears fell down my cheeks.

Red flames appeared out of nowhere, surrounding me. I got on my feet as the pain disappeared, replaced with something more surreal and dangerous.

Drex fired the gun at me, and the bullet melted into a puddle and fell to the ground.

He made a huge mistake by firing at me.

His eyes widened in shock as he took a step back.

"What the fuck are you?"

Maybe this is why they wanted to kill me, because I was a monster just like Lain.

My body was covered in flames, but they didn't cause me any pain or discomfort. They made me feel stronger.

"You hurt Lain!"

The surrounding flames grew bigger, and I pointed at Drex as flames of fire left my body and blasted him. He was in no shape to fight me off now that my flames were stronger than anything he'd seen before.

My body felt like it was being ripped apart by the heat, and when my flames were finally released from me, there wasn't a human body anymore.

The whole forest was filled with fire, and I looked at my hands, which were covered in red and orange hues.

I was a monster.

I was a demon.

It was then that I knew that this is what I am supposed to look like. No one else in this world could have turned into a fire demon; only demons can do something like this.

It felt like I couldn't breathe, and when I opened my eyes, the flames began to disappear, and I could see my skin returning to normal.

The feeling of my muscles tightening up as they got used to being rid of the fire made my legs tremble, and then I collapsed onto the ground. My heart beating so fast against my chest made my head dizzy, but I forced myself to sit up so I wouldn't pass out again.

I couldn't spot Drex nor Noah. Did I kill them?

The mere thought made me sick to my stomach.

I grew up thinking that I was human, but in reality, I was a demon from the pits of hell. A demon who had become too weak to even kill humans, and then suddenly it started getting hotter and hotter, and soon all I saw was darkness.
