stabbed in the back

*DREX*

I pressed the gun deeper into the boy's temple, sending him a nasty glare if he dared to blow our cover.

He nodded frantically, filled with fear and licked his lips when I cocked a brow at him. The Dark Tide had decided to kidnap him as a means of tracking down Freya.

His eyes widened in shock and he glared at me.

A smirk curved my lips. I couldn't believe that this kid had the balls to glare at me. I'd shoot him if the Dark Tide didn't need his ass to track down Lain and Freya.

The phone was on loudspeaker.

“Noah, is that you?” She asked curiously.

I pressed the gun deeper, and he swallowed hard, closing his eyes for a brief moment and opening them again, plastering a fake smile like he could see her.

“Of course it's me, Freya,” he chipped excitedly.

She sighed with relief from the other end while my team kept trying to track down her location.

We only had a few minutes to do so before Lain grew suspicious.

“When I saw the chaos in the club, you were the first person I thought of, darling, and I wanted to make sure that you got out safely,” he muttered sadly.

I could hear Lain in the background telling Freya to make the call quick and short.

Noah looked at me, sending a puzzled look.

I gave him a knowing look, and he nodded quietly.

“What's with the noise? It sounds like you have company,” Freya asked.

Freya didn't reply right away, which was great because she was buying the team more time to find the location.

“Uh, I'm with a friend. He helped me escape the club when the shooters came in.”

He faked a smile, hiding his anger.

“Can you trust him?” he asked curiously, waiting for a response.

Freya let out a breath.

“I think he has good intentions since he saved me from getting killed today.”

I couldn't help but feel sorry for this girl. She was so naïve and trusting. She didn't personally know Lain, and she believed that he was a good person.

She'll lose her shit when she learns that he was sent to kill her.

“No matter what you say about him, I don't feel comfortable that you're alone with that so-called friend of yours, so is it okay if I come over? Just send me the address.”

There was a silent pause from the end, and before Freya could reply, I heard noise shuffling in the background as Lain yelled at her and hung up the call.

Typical Lain.

He chose the wrong day to turn on the Dark Tide.

I took my gun, and Noah fell to the floor, panting heavily.

I can't tell whether he shit his pants or not from this angle.

Furthermore, I ignored him and looked at our tech wizard.

“It was less than three minutes, did you manage to find them?”

He turned around, smiling at me.

“I got them,” he muttered, pointing at the screen that was showing a red dot in the woods and the dot suddenly disappeared.

I'm guessing that Lain turned off Freya's phone, but it was already too late. We got everything we wanted.

Noah slowly got up and wiped his bloody nose.

I had knocked him out when I left the club due to his resistance to cooperating with the Dark Tide.

The kid acted tough when he was just a little pebble.

“Are you going to hurt Freya?” he asked in a worried tone.

I chuckled darkly, loading another gun.

“Why do you care? If you were a real friend, you would have probably kept your mouth shut and died for her.”

His lips turned into a thin line.

“Just don't hurt her.”

Was he really tossing commands at me?

The doors opened, and one of the superiors of the Dark Tide walked in, and my shoulders stiffened.

He was holding a thick brown envelope, and I had a feeling that it was going to be bad news.

He gave me a stern nod, a sly smirk marrying his lips.

“Looks like you have a new mission, soldier.”

I nodded quietly as he handed me the envelope.

I opened it, and it was filled with two pictures.

“You have to get rid of Lain Navier Edevane and Freya Allan, but…" he trailed off, looking at me.

Galen looked amused, and this was a bad sign.

“You can shoot the girl, but bring her back alive, and as for Lain, kill that fucking ungrateful traitor.”

His tone sent a shiver down my spine.

This was the man who took in Lain when he was just sixteen years old, and five years later the tables had turned.

He wanted to see him dead.

“I took that bastard in and gave him a fucking life after the death of his family, and he decided to betray me so make him bleed.”

He gave me a pat on the shoulder, and I swallowed hard when our eyes locked.

“I know that he is your best friend, but you also know the consequences of failing to meet our expectations.”

I nodded quietly.

“Yes, sir.”

Satisfied with my response, Galen left the building.

Once he was gone, I looked at Lain's picture with a heavy heart.

If I didn't kill him, I was going to lose my life in the end, and that wasn't an option, even if he was my best friend.

I'll just have to betray him and stab him in the back while he's not looking.

I tucked the pictures inside my pocket and walked over to Noah.

“Get up.”

I ordered the team to stay behind because Lain would know that this is an ambush if he senses us coming.

Two hours later, Noah and I are walking by foot in the forest, following the tracker on my wristwatch.

It's not long before we come across a cabin in the woods.

“Lain Navier Edevane, get your ass out here!”

The door opens, and he walks out alone, and moments later Freya joins him, and she stops in her tracks when she sees her friend being held at gunpoint.

A gasp escaped her lips and Lain pulled her behind him.

I couldn't understand why he was risking his life to protect her.

I'll give him an option; if he can't take it, I'll have no other choice but to send him to the Grim Reaper.

“Give me the girl, and I'll be generous enough to award you with a quick, painless death. So, what's it going to be?” I taunted, making him frown.

There was a dangerous glint in his eyes, and they changed color, sending a shiver down my spine.

What the actual fuck?
