Hunter

I reached the kitchen before Annalise did, my wolf surging hard beneath my skin at the scent hitting me the moment I crossed the threshold, fresh blood, that made every instinct in me scream danger.

Melissa lay crumpled against the wash basin, a gash along her forearm bleeding steadily, her face pale and sweat-slicked.

“What happened,” I demanded, dropping to my knees beside her.

“Knife slipped,” she said, though her voice came out thin, unconvincing. “I’m fine, Alpha, it’s nothing—”

The stranger’s scent hit me a second later. My wolf locked up tight, recognizing something old and buried. Familiar in a way that freaked me out more than any random enemy would have.“Who are you?” I demanded.“A friend of your father’s,” he said, slowly lowering his hood. Older guy, silver mixed into dark hair, eyes sharp and calculating, reminded me uncomfortably of the way Corwin always danced around the truth. “Though I doubt he ever mentioned me. Men like your father don’t talk much about debts they’d rather forget.”“The debt,” I said. “The one Corwin still won’t fully explain.”Something like satisfaction flickered across the stranger’s face. “So he’s finally started talking. Slowly, I’m sure. Corwin never could just spit out the ugly parts.”Camille shifted beside him, still clutching the stolen scrolls. All her earlier composure was gone. She looked scared now.“Camille,” I said, keeping my voice steady even though fury and confusion were tearing through me. “What the hell h

Annalise“Gone where?” The words tore out of me before the attendant had even finished catching her breath.“We don’t know, my lady. She slipped out during the deliberation, before the verdict was even read. One of the guards saw her heading toward the east wing, toward the archive room.”Hunter was already moving. I fell into step beside him without hesitation, walking as fast as my feet can carry me. “What’s in the archive room?” I asked.“Old pack records,” Hunter said grimly. “Land deeds. Alliance agreements. Family histories going back generations.” His jaw tightened. “Including, apparently, whatever debt Corwin’s been dancing around not telling me.”We reached the archive room to find the door standing open. Shelves in disarray. Scrolls scattered across the floor like something had been torn through in a hurry.“She knew exactly what she was looking for,” I said, crouching to examine the mess. “This wasn’t random panic. This was purpose.”Hunter crouched beside me, examining an

HunterThe chamber had gone dangerously quiet after Melissa’s testimony. Five Elders exchanged glances that told me the tide had shifted at least for the moment.Camille recovered fast. Faster than I liked. “A slip of the knife,” she said smoothly, “is hardly proof of intent. I’ve expressed concern for this pack’s stability. I’ve never once raised a hand against anyone.”“You didn’t need to raise a hand,” Annalise said before I could respond. “That’s rather the point, isn’t it? You’ve built an entire method around never needing to.”Corwin raised a hand for silence. The chamber obeyed instantly, old authority settling heavy over the room. “This council will deliberate,” he said. “Formally. Both parties will await our decision.” His gaze moved between Camille and me, unreadable. “This is a serious matter, and it will be treated as such.”We were dismissed shortly after. I found myself pacing the corridor outside the chamber while the Elders deliberated behind closed doors. Annalise’s h

AnnaliseWord of the hearing reached me before Hunter did. That told me everything I needed to know about how fast Camille intended to move now that the fight had gone public.Melissa found me in the kitchen mid-morning, still favoring her stitched arm, expression grim. “The Elders are summoning him,” she said without preamble. “Formal council. This afternoon.”“About the fire?”“About you.” Melissa’s voice was flat. “About what Camille’s apparently telling anyone who’ll listen. That the Alpha’s judgment can’t be trusted while he’s "in her words", distracted by an omega he hasn’t even properly claimed.”My stomach dropped. “She’s using last night against him.”“She’s using everything against him. The fire’s almost beside the point now. She’s spinning a story about pack stability. About an Alpha too consumed with his personal feelings to lead properly. Corwin’s already agreed to hear it formally.”I found Hunter in his study an hour later. Pacing. Jaw tight with barely restrained fury.

The storehouse was still smoking when I got there. One wall had collapsed inward, and the acrid smell of burnt grain smelled thick enough to choke on.“Nobody hurt,” the warrior said quickly, matching my pace. “We caught it before it spread to the others. But Alpha—look at this.”He led me around the collapsed wall to a scorched patch of ground just outside, mostly untouched by the fire itself. He crouched and pulled something half-buried from the ash.A cloak pin. Silver, shaped like a crescent moon. The kind Camille’s personal household staff always wore.“Found it near the tree line,” the warrior said. “Whoever set this was in a hurry leaving. Dropped it and didn’t stop to look.”I turned the pin over in my hand. Fury settled cold and absolute through my chest. “This confirms the watcher tonight. Same person, most likely. Reporting back, then covering their tracks with a fire meant to distract us.”Annalise was still breathless from the chase. She stared at the pin with something c

HunterI couldn’t sleep, so I headed out looking for something to hit.The training grounds were empty that late. The Moon was high and cold. I’d gotten three solid hits into a hard rhythm on the wooden post when I caught her scent coming from the trees.Annalise.She hadn’t spotted me yet. She was moving through slow, careful forms in the dark by herself. Even from a distance I could see how wiped out she was. I watched her for a second before I said anything. Something in my chest went tight and warm watching her refuse to just lie down and let this pack break her.“You’re going to hurt yourself,” I said. “Practicing that stance without a proper guard.”She spun, blade half-raised on instinct before she realized it was me. Then she lowered it slow, some of the tension leaving her shoulders.“Couldn’t sleep,” she said.“Neither could I.”I walked over. Close enough now to see the exhaustion carved deep under her eyes...the same look I saw in my own mirror most nights.“Ava came to yo
