EVELINE

Lucian finally made his way back to her through the thinning crowd.

A few people were still near him, but he excused himself politely and came to stand in front of her seat.

Eveline looked up at him, still slightly breathless. “That was amazing.”

He gave a small shrug. “It is my honor to entertain.”

“Me or the people?”

His lips lifted in a small, teasing smile. “Can't it be both?”

She tried very hard not to think about the way he had looked in wolf form: massive, dark, controlled. O

LUCIAN.The clock on the office wall struck two in the afternoon, its rhythmic ticking the only sound inside the fifth-floor suite.Lucian didn't look up from the stack of administrative files spread across his desk. For five days, he had buried himself in department budgets and board petitions, working eighteen hours a day to keep his mind from drifting back to an empty villa. His wolf, however, refused to cooperate that afternoon. The beast paced behind his ribs, its claws dragging against his lungs in a tight, agitated circle. It growled at every passing footstep in the hall and demanded what it had been demanding since forever: Find her.Lucian signed his name at the bottom of an equipment procurement sheet when a knock came at his door.“Enter,” Lucian said.Maeve stepped into the room, holding a manila folder shutting the door firmly behind her. She was stepping up to the edge of the desk without her usual jumpy posture. She didn't offer a flirtatious remark or try to seduce him

DAMON.The heater in the rented sedan rattled, blowing lukewarm air across Damon’s face.It was five-thirty in the morning. Outside, Fourth Street was bathed in the dull gray gloom before sunrise. Damon rested his arms over the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the narrow storefront between a dry cleaner and a vacant tailor shop. The situation with his father had grown worse by the hour. Elias had cut off his accounts, barred him from the family estate, and left a simple directive: Do not return across the border without her.Damon’s jaw tightened. He reached into his jacket pocket and turned the folded paper Maeve had given him: Henderson’s Books & Brew. Six o’clock. At five-forty-five, a figure turned the corner off Fifth Street. Damon went still.A lady walked with her head down against the mist, her collar pulled high. She wore an oversized dark wool coat that hung past her knees, her hands buried deep in the pockets. He leaned closer to the windshield, narrowing his eyes.Somet

EVELINEEveline sat in the clinic waiting room, her fingers curled tight around the envelope in her pocket. Two hundred and forty dollars in cash. The clinic was tucked into an alley in the lower industrial district. No intake forms, no ID checks, and no questions. The woman behind the sliding glass had simply taken her first name and pointed toward the row of plastic chairs.A door at the end of the hall swung open.A woman in faded green scrubs stepped out, a thin piece of paper resting against her arm. “Miss. Hart.”Eveline stood. Her knees were stiff, but she forced her feet forward, following the woman down the dim hallway into a small back room.An examination table stood under two bright fluorescent lights. On it were surgical instruments, a pack of unlabeled tablets, and a small cup of water.“Sit,” the woman said, hooking the door latch shut.Eveline sat on the edge of the table.“Wolf?” the woman asked without looking up.“Yes.”“How far along?”“Two to three weeks.”The wo

DAMON.The leather booth in the back of the Lounge was dimly lit.Damon leaned back against the cushion, a glass of bourbon untouched in front of him. The burns on his wrists from the prison cuffs had faded to ugly, peeling scabs. His phone sat face-down on the table. He had tried his father’s direct line three times since he was released. Both calls had gone straight to his dad’s beta, who gave him the same flat answer: The Alpha is not willing to speak to you, Damon. Do not call this line again until you have something useful to report.Damon’s jaw tightened. He picked up the glass and swallowed a full glass of liquor in one gulp. A shadow fell over the booth. Maeve slid into the opposite seat without waiting for an invitation. She wore a high-collared black wool trench coat, sunglasses and a scarf making just a minor part of her face visible. Damon raised an eyebrow, setting his glass down.“You look like someone on the run that doesn't want to be caught,” Damon said, chuckling.

EVELINE.Eveline climbed the stairs to the apartment in a hurry, holding the brown pharmacy bag tightly. The apartment was quiet. Tammy was still at the café covering the morning shift.Eveline walked straight into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. Her hands shook as she tore the brown paper open. The vitamin bottles clattered into the sink basin. She picked up the test kit, and read the back instructions even though she already knew how they worked from her clinical classes. She opened both packets, followed the directions, and set the two white sticks flat on the edge of the ceramic sink, screens facing down. She set a three-minute timer on her phone, placed it next to the tests, and stepped back. She paced the narrow space between the bathtub and the door. Her palms were sweaty. She pressed them against her jeans, breathing through her nose. It’s just stress, Eveline. She told herself. Cycles get delayed all the time. Her phone buzzed twice against the sink. The timer wen

EVELINE.Eveline tapped the red button, opened Lucian’s contact, and hit Block. Her hands were shaking so hard she had to curl them into her sweater sleeves to keep them still.Tammy sat up, wanting to get details from Eveline. “What happened? Was there any problem?”“No,” Eveline said. “No problem at all.”“Then why do you look pale?”“He called to lecture me,” Eveline said, pacing between the bed and the window. “He called to tell me running away isn't the answer. He called to say my desk is waiting for me, acting so noble, so concerned…” Her voice cracked, as she finally sat. “And the entire time, Maeve was standing on his porch in the middle of the night, calling him baby.”Tammy blinked, more interested now than ever. “Maeve was there? At the villa?”“She was right at the door. I heard her through the phone.”A sudden sting pessed behind Eveline’s eyes. Before she could blink it back, a sob tore out of her throat. She pressed both palms over her mouth, but the tears came anyway.
