Nyssa’s heart hammered so painfully against her chest she could barely breathe. Lucien’s body was still slumped weakly against the ropes, his breaths were shallow, his head rested helplessly against his shoulder.

The wolfsbane had drained him of everything. She had never seen him so still, so fragile, so breakable. It terrified her in a way she had never known fear before.

“Please,” Nyssa whispered, even though her voice wavered violently. “Please leave him alone. Don’t hurt him. Take me instead, kill me instead ….. just leave Lucien.”

Her words fell desperately into the stale air of the cottage, but she could see Adrian’s face mould into amusement.

He didn’t even look at her. He simply twirled the dagger between his fingers beside Lucien, deciding where best to sink it.

Nyssa trembled. She shut her eyes tightly and reached deep inside her, calling out to the one spirit she believed could still save him.

Her voice echoed through her mind, stretching toward Lucien’s wolf.
