Prologue

Natalie

I've never thought that I will come back home for this reason: to become the Alpha of my father's pack.

It was a whole night of heavy rain, and the town was covered with thick dark clouds.

I tilted my head against the cold car window, and the strange air made me a little anxious.

"You must be exhausted," Jeff said. "You haven’t slept along the way, don’t worry we’ll be there soon"

Jeff is the housekeeper of my family, we had been driving for about 4 hours.

"No worries Jeff, I just...considering how to face my family." I sighed, forcing myself to give a little smile.

"Your uncle will be warmly welcome you, Miss Natalie." Jeff looks in the mirror. "They are waiting for you. I've told him we will be there soon."

"That's nice, but...I just don't know how to act. Since I've already flown away from the pack for 4 years."

"We all miss you very much, Miss Natalie," Jeff said with a positive voice. "Do you remember Your aunt Braelyn? She's cleaned a room for you in their house so you don’t need to clean the old house and cook yourself. Just relax, take your time, I’m sure you will adapt to your new life here very soon."

"Cool. Thank you Jeff, I really appreciate it."

It was not hard for anyone in the pack to find that Jeff is a nice guy. Especially when he kindly skipped the topic of me leaving the pack four years ago, even though it's a well-known fact. A fact that no one intended to mention, after all, my father is their alpha, and as the alpha's daughter, I gave up inheriting this pack.

It was I, who abandoned my whole family. The Alpha’s daughter abandoned the responsibility of an Alpha,

My father was a very taciturn werewolf, a typical alpha, but an atypical father. I saw him less often at home after my mother passed away. I even thought I spent more time at my uncle and aunt's house in my childhood. It was hard for a child to get used to it, but I understood, he needed to distract himself from the truth that mum will not hold our hands anymore. So did I. No matter how hard life was, we still have each other.

Until I mentioned that I wanted to leave the pack and didn't want to be an alpha. My father scolded me harshly. In his eyes, any dreams of kids are inferior to the responsibility of leading the clan. But a teenager who has lived in a pack for 18 years can only see shackles and boredom. We argued badly that day. As result, I came to live in a big city myself. My father was so disappointed in me that he refused to let anyone come to me. So I lost words with them after that.

Four years later, I received a call from my uncle Tony: Nat, we need you back, your father is missing.

The uncle's voice was calm but unmistakable, I would not doubt the authenticity of this information. So how could a father who values responsibility leave behind his pack? I asked more questions, but no matter what I asked, my uncle couldn't answer any of them. No one knew where my father was, what happened to him, whether he... was alive.

Although werewolves are still unknown in modern society, we are one of the most powerful species, we rarely get sick, and excellent resilience makes our physical stronger. Once the wolf in our hearts awakened, we can transform into giant wolves that can easily tear apart any human being. Not to mention the Alphas in the wolf pack, they are even stronger than all wolves. As the leader, Alpha will never leave the pack easily unless they died. I swear that no matter what happens, my father will protect the pack until the last moment.

More unanswered questions flooded my mind. If Mom was still around, she could find him. They were the mates, destined by the moon goddess, they can find each other by mindlink. But now, I can no longer get her help.

I let myself bask in the memories until Jeff got out of the car and opened the door for me.

"Nat!" Aunt Braelyn ran up to me and gave me a big hug, "Sweetie, how are you, I'm so happy to see you, I miss you so much!"

"Aunt Braelyn, I miss you too" The warm hug made me smile, "As you can see, I'm fine. How are you?"

My aunt's welcome seemed to ease some of my anxiety, she was the same as 4 years ago, and was always caring for me, just like another mother. Every night when my father wasn't home, I would trot to the backyard of her house and sit on the little swing they had built for Selina and Alden, waiting for my aunt to find me and take my hand back to the room.

"Woh, of course, they're all good, Selina and Alden haven't after school yet, you'll see them in a while," my aunt said cheerfully, hugging my shoulders, "Tony is still working at the pack office.. too many things happened, the patrol, there's a shortage of people. But don't worry, he'll be back to meet you after dinner."

"Come in, you need a cup of tea and a good rest." Auntie turned her head and walked into the house,
