KADE

Someone had put in effort to find these, and they didn’t send them to the police, they sent them here, with a note. It could only mean one thing: they knew about my involvement in the matter and were probably going to the police or gearing up for blackmail. I fished out the note tucked in the corner and read what was written on it:

Don’t lose them again – M.C

“Is it what you wanted?” my mom asked. I placed the note inside, backed away from the box again, then instantly faked a calm expression before turning around to meet her gaze. I didn’t hear her walk into the living room, which added to the initial shock of seeing the items.

“Ye... yes,” I stammered. “Where’s Lucian?”

“I don’t know. He didn’t come home last night. I thought you knew,” she replied and arched an eyebrow.

“He went patrolling last night. If he’s not back yet… he’s probably at… a meeting with the council. Please, Mom, can you drop me off?”

“Definitely. Let me pack the picnic baskets,” she said and went back into t

ELLAOne by one, the members of the council recounted the details of the pact they knew. Each person’s statement left me more stunned than the last.Every time Lucian glanced in Kade’s direction, I saw his expression alternate between annoyance, disappointment, and something else, an emotion I couldn’t quite label, but one that clearly wasn’t the rage pulsing through him.As the council members spoke, I recalled the vision I had earlier, my ancestors making an agreement with the Blackthorns.I hadn’t fully understood what I’d seen at the time, but now, hearing them recount the events in various ways that all led to the same conclusion, everything started making more sense. We had made an agreement with them, and they had failed to uphold their end of the bargain. They had a reason, of course, but to me, it was flimsy, based on emotion, not truth. They hadn’t even verified the source.“So you’ve known what we were dealing with this entire time and said nothing?” Lucian demanded, angril

KADEI got out of bed at the crack of dawn the next morning and made my way downstairs. The scent of pancakes wafted throughout the house, and I followed it to the kitchen. My mother was busy at the counter, mixing flour, eggs, sugar, and some of the other things scattered on the kitchen table that I was too distracted to pay attention to.“Morning, Mom,” I said and leaned against the door. “Sleep well?”“Hello, Kade,” she said with a smile as she turned to meet my gaze, then pointed at the pancakes. “Want some?”“Yes, please,” I answered and took a pancake from the bowl. It was still warm, but I shoved it in my mouth anyway and headed to the fridge to grab some milk.“You’re up early,” she remarked as I poured the milk into a glass. I nodded and chewed slowly, then sipped from the cup before responding.“I could barely sleep,” I said, swirling the milk in the glass.“Me too,” she answered. “I was thinking about that pact you asked about last night and decided to make some pancakes be

ELLAI tried to keep my presence as discreet as possible. Kade picked up on the change in the atmosphere faster than his brother had, and I could use that as an opportunity to find out what else they knew about the murder.I watched as Lucian led the others through the woods. They walked as quietly as they could, turning in every direction they heard a sound from.I hadn’t heard Claire’s voice in a while, and it filled me with relief to know that I had successfully calmed down and the procedure was going well.Or I had permanently slipped into this state with no way to come out. The only way to find out which side of the coin I had been dealt was to wait until something changed.Time rolled by as the patrol team walked towards the other end of the woods, then decided to call it a day.“See you at the pack meeting,” Lucian said and walked off in the opposite direction. The others mumbled a response as they walked away in different directions.I heard a buzzing sound in my ears, then si

ELLAI was back at the waterfall, which filled me with nostalgia. I hadn’t given it much thought prior to this procedure happening, but having to force this memory to resurface and relive the experience put a lot of things into perspective.I was miles away from the place I called home, desperately trying to cut ties with everything that made it the place I had known my entire life.I was tempted to open my eyes and ask Claire if the procedure was going to take some of my memory away, but I decided against it.She hadn’t mentioned anything of the sort, and it was easier to focus on the fact that I would no longer be tied to the Blackthorn twins.“You’re there now. Take deep breaths and try to maintain the connection,” I heard Claire’s voice reverberate through the woods. It sounded like she was far off, but at the same time, I could hear her in my head. I did as she said, exhaling a couple of times before focusing my gaze on the waterfall in front of me.The sound of water cascading f

KADE“I know it feels very weird right now, but we have to trust the police and hope they can catch the killers soon. That poor kid and his mother deserve justice.”My mother’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. For a few minutes, I had relived that day, and it filled me with a wave of uneasiness. The air that morning felt like something had changed drastically, and I dreaded what was to come.At the time, I regarded Ella fainting as a perfect example of why she was seen as the weak link and even made snide comments about it.But with everything I had heard from the seer—as much as Lucian would hate to hear it—I was beginning to think there was more to the entire ordeal than met the eye.I blinked and turned to meet her gaze, then exhaled slowly. “They need to get justice,” I agreed. “Monsieur Cavill, is he…”“A werewolf?” she asked, and I nodded. “No. He isn’t, and I don’t think your father ever told him about it.”“How close could they have been if he didn’t know something that imp
