Yeah, my boyfriend is here to pick me up. Oh, look at him,” Valerie Sterling said, her voice smooth, icy, and quiet enough to freeze the room.

Without giving the stunned onlookers a fraction of a second to process her words, she turned on her heel, stepped directly into the path of a tall, impossibly sharp-featured man strolling casually past the VIP corridor, and pulled him down by his suit lapels into a deep, deliberate kiss.

The man froze for a microsecond. His body went rigid under her touch, but he didn't pull away. Up close, a crisp scent of cedarwood, amber, and rain enveloped her—an aroma so faintly familiar it made her heart skip a beat, though her adrenaline flooded any lingering memory. His hand instinctively rose, catching the curve of her waist with firm authority to steady her against his chest.

When Valerie finally broke the kiss, gasping softly for air, her lips flushed pink, she turned back to her tormentors with an idle smirk.

The sneers on the faces of her former classmates had completely dissolved. Standing at the center of the crowd, Trevor looked as if he had seen a ghost. His champagne glass wobbled violently in his hand, his mouth agape.

“U-Uncle...?” Trevor stammered, his voice cracking as he stumbled back a step.

Valerie blinked, caught off guard. Uncle?

She glanced back at the stranger whose lips she had just stolen. He was towering, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit that breathed understated luxury. His dark gray eyes held a calm, unreadable pool of amusement as he wiped a trace of her lip gloss from his corner lip with his thumb. She figured he was just a wealthy older attendee or perhaps an executive staying at the hotel lounge. She certainly had no idea he was Christopher Hugh Blackwood—the ruthless, legendary chairman of Blackwood Enterprises, her ex-fiancé's enigmatic uncle, and the very man who held the purse strings of the entire city's financial sector.

A Few Hours Earlier…

The heavy roar of jet engines gave way to the ambient chime of the international terminal as Valerie Sterling stepped off the flight from London. A cool autumn draft brushed against her neck, carrying the nostalgic, bittersweet air of her hometown—a city she had fled five long years ago in absolute disgrace.

Adjusting the oversized collar of her trench coat, she pulled down her dark sunglasses and scanned the arrival gate. A private driver holding a small placard with her surname stepped forward with a respectful bow.

“Welcome back, Miss Sterling,” the driver said quietly, taking her single leather luggage case. “The vehicle is waiting in the executive lane.”

“Thank you,” Valerie replied, her voice soft but guarded.

Sitting in the back seat of the black sedan as it wound through the familiar streets, Valerie looked at the reflection of her own sharp hazel eyes in the dark window. Five years ago, her world had shattered in a single night. She had been young, naive, and hopelessly attached to Trevor—a match her parents had arranged through a formal agreement between their families. But on the night of her eighteenth birthday, her supposed best friend, Cassie, had drugged her cocktail.

Cassie had wanted Trevor and the social status that came with him. Her malicious plan was simple: compromise Valerie, frame her in a tawdry scandal, and force the engagement to break. Although Cassie’s plan to catch Valerie with a hired brute had gone awry when Valerie stumbled into the wrong luxury suite, the outcome had been equally life-altering. Valerie had spent a chaotic, feverish night in the arms of a shadowy stranger whose face she couldn't remember—only the faint scent of rain and cedar, and the fleeting touch of a distinct tattoo on his chest.

Horrified, confused, and discovering weeks later that she was pregnant, Valerie had fled the country without telling a soul, breaking her engagement with Trevor overnight.

Now, five years later, she was forced to return. Her family's business, Sterling Global, was on the precipice of total bankruptcy. Her father’s health was failing, and the predatory banks were threatening to seize everything within thirty days.

Her phone chimed in her purse, displaying a digital banner for the High School Alumni Charity Gala at the Grandview Hotel. Valerie closed her eyes. She knew attending was walking into a snake pit, but the city's top venture capitalists and angel investors would all be under that roof. She had to try.

Two hours later, Valerie stepped into the gilded ballroom of the Grandview Hotel. The air was thick with live violin music, expensive perfume, and low chatter. The moment her heels clicked across the marble floor, a wave of silence spread through the front room.

Whispers flared like dry tinder.

“Isn’t that Valerie Sterling? She actually dared to show her face back here?”

“Look at her coat—trying so hard to look elegant. I heard the Sterlings are completely broke. The banks are auctioning their villa next month!”

A young woman in a sequined dress stepped forward with a condescending smile. “Oh, Valerie! You’re back! How was life abroad? Did you run out of funds over there?”

“I heard you came back because your family is begging for scraps,” another man joined in, sneering over his wine glass.

“Do you need us to pass around a charity plate for the Sterlings?”

Valerie kept her head held high, her spine straight as steel. “I appreciate your concern, but my family’s affairs are quite secure.”

“Are they really?” A sharp, sickeningly sweet voice sliced through the hall.

Cassie strode out from the VIP lounge, her hand draped tightly over Trevor’s arm. She was wearing a blood-red designer gown, dripping in diamonds. Trevor stood beside her, his expression a mix of smug triumph and uncomfortable tension as he looked at Valerie.

“There’s no need to pretend, Val,” Cassie said, pouting insincerely as she reached into her clutch and pulled out a small velvet box. “Maybe you should just beg Trevor based on your old relationship. After all, he used to care for you before you abandoned him five years ago.”

Valerie looked at Trevor, then at Cassie, her expression completely detached. “There’s no need for that. Trevor and I ended things five years ago. I only came tonight as a guest.”

“Oh, don’t be like that,” Cassie sneered, shoving the velvet box toward her. “I bought this designer brooch for you. Consider it an apology because I missed your grand welcome at the airport!”

Valerie didn't take the box. Her hazel eyes narrowed slightly. “Keep your gift, Cassie. I don't take hand-me-downs. Neither gifts... nor men.

”

Trevor’s face flushed dark red with anger. “Valerie! Watch your mouth!”

A sleazy former classmate nearby laughed, taking a step toward Valerie and brazenly scanning her figure from head to toe. “Hey, if the Sterlings are desperate and you’re single, you don't have to be so proud. If you need a man to back you up, I’m available tonight for the right price.”

Cassie giggled behind her manicured hand, waiting to see Valerie break under the public humiliation.

Valerie felt a cold fire burning in her chest, but she didn't lose her cool. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a tall, strikingly handsome figure in a dark suit walking slowly down the adjacent private corridor, flanked by two bodyguards. He looked distinguished, powerful, and completely detached from the foolish crowd.

Without missing a beat, Valerie turned back to her harassers with a cool smile. “I’m afraid I’ll have to decline your generous offer. I already have a boyfriend.”

Cassie snorted. “A boyfriend? You just landed at the airport two hours ago! Stop making things up to save your pathetic pride!”

“Yeah, my boyfriend is here to pick me up. Oh, look at him, he's right there,” Valerie stated calmly, pointing toward the tall stranger.

Before anyone could stop her, Valerie strode over, intercepted the man, grabbed his silk lapels, and kissed him soundly on the mouth.

Now, standing in the sudden, deafening quiet of the hall, Valerie looked at the bewildered face of her ex-fiancé.

“U-Uncle...?” Trevor whimpered again, his knee visibly trembling.

Valerie frowned softly, her eyes shifting back to the man she was still touching. He was towering, easily six-foot-two, with razor-sharp cheekbones and dark gray eyes that seemed to see right through her soul. She had no idea who this 'Uncle' was—likely some wealthy relative of Trevor's family who managed a small subsidiary or held family shares. She certainly didn't care about his lineage.

Christopher Hugh Blackwood looked down at the bold young woman in front of him. A subtle, dangerous spark danced deep within his eyes, but his voice remained smooth as velvet.

“A boyfriend?” Christopher murmured, his deep timbre vibrating through her fingertips. “Is that what we are calling me now?”

Valerie cleared her throat, keeping her composure. “Just please  play along,” she whispered through barely parted lips, tugging his coat slightly.

To her shock, Christopher didn't push her away. Instead, he wrapped a firm arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side, and turned a cold, piercing glance toward Trevor and Cassie.

“Is there a problem here, Trevor?” Christopher asked coldly.

Trevor went pale, swallowing hard. “N-No, Uncle Christopher! None at all! We... we were just leaving!”

  • Married To Him    Chapter 5

Christopher Hugh Blackwood sat in the leather interior of his Maybach, his long fingers drumming a erratic, restless rhythm against the armrest. His tailored suit jacket felt suffocatingly tight across his shoulders, every breath heavy with a sharp, knotting tension he hadn't experienced in over a decade.“Driver, move faster,” Christopher growled, his voice laced with an edge of quiet panic that made Luke, sitting in the front passenger seat, flinch.“Sir, we’re already going twenty miles over the speed limit—” Luke began nervously.“I don't care,” Christopher interrupted, his gray eyes dark as storm clouds as he stared out at the passing streetlights. His mind was a chaotic firestorm. Ever since Luke had delivered the dossier on the Sterling family’s financial ruin, Christopher’s cool, calculating composure had completely disintegrated. The thought of Valerie—proud, brilliant, fierce Valerie—being backed into a corner by predatory banks was bad enough. But the realization that

  • Married To Him    Chapter 4

All afternoon, Christopher couldn't concentrate on a single financial report resting on his mahogany desk. The word ‘Baby’ replayed in his mind like a persistent, suffocating knot. He tried reviewing quarterly earnings, reading risk assessment sheets, and signing off on multi-million-dollar land acquisitions, but every time he closed his eyes, he saw Valerie’s radiant, tender smile as she answered that call. She had never smiled at him like that. His executive assistant, Luke, stood beside the desk, sweating profusely as he watched his boss blindly sign three crucial financial documents in the wrong execution boxes. The air in the top-floor executive suite felt so thick and freezing that Luke barely dared to breathe. By six in the evening, unable to take the agonizing uncertainty a second longer, Christopher slammed his Montblanc pen onto the polished surface with a loud, echoey thud. “Investigate who she was talking to,” Christopher commanded, his voice dropping into a cold

  • Married To Him    Chapter 3

Valerie followed Christopher out of the private elevator and onto the top executive floor, stepping onto thick, plush carpets that absorbed every sound. Looking around at the massive glass walls and private art galleries, she assumed he was perhaps a senior department director or a high-level executive assistant given his personal relationship with Trevor and his obvious familiarity with the floor. “That’s good,” Valerie said smoothly, turning around with a subtle, confident smirk as they reached the wide, sunlit corridor. “Given how stupid and naive Trevor was acting yesterday, I didn't expect much from his acquaintances. But you seem surprisingly capable.” Christopher tilted his head slightly, his dark gray eyes fixing on her with mild, entertained curiosity. “Oh really? Tell me, what were you expecting then?” “Nothing much,” Valerie replied casually, adjusting her leather handbag over her shoulder. “I’m going back to work now. Bye.” Christopher stood in place, quietly

Despite the utter chaos and confusion of the moment, Christopher Hugh Blackwood did not expose Valerie’s lie. Instead, his hand remained firmly anchored on the curve of her waist, pulling her closer against his side. “Babe, are you done here?” Christopher’s low, rich voice carried across the silent room, smooth as silk. “I told you I was going to wait outside in the car for you.” Valerie’s mind was spinning at a hundred miles an hour. She had no idea why this striking stranger was playing along with her absurd claim, but the sight of Trevor and Cassie gaping in paralyzed terror was far too satisfying to pass up. “Yeah, I’m done,” Valerie said, forcing a soft, brilliant smile as she wrapped her arm through his. “Let’s go, darling.” Together, they walked past the stunned crowd of alumni, leaving her former classmates whispering in utter shock. As soon as they stepped out of the hotel’s grand entrance, a sleek, custom Maybach pulled up to the curb. The chauffeur immediately
