The darkness didn’t last.

Consciousness returned in jagged pieces—the antiseptic sting of the air, the rhythmic beeping of machines, the dull ache in my arms where IVs had been jammed into my veins. My mouth tasted like copper and regret.

I wasn’t dead.

Somehow, that felt like the worst betrayal of all.

Adam sat slumped in the chair beside my bed, his usually immaculate suit wrinkled, his knuckles bruised. He was asleep, his dark lashes casting shadows over the sharp angles of his face. Even in rest, he looked like a storm waiting to break.

I moved, and pain lanced through my ribs. A choked gasp escaped me.

Adam’s eyes snapped open.

For a heartbeat, we just stared at each other. His gaze dropped to my throat—where the bruises from whatever happened must still be blooming—then flicked away, as if he couldn’t bear the sight.

"You weren’t breathing," he said, voice rough. "Your heart stopped for forty-seven seconds."

I swallowed. "You counted?"

His jaw tightened. "I a

The meeting unfolded like a scene from some grotesque play, visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite. Below on the pool terrace, crystal glasses caught the moonlight as they clinked together, the sound carrying up to me like broken wind chimes. I pressed my palms against the cool glass, watching the surreal tableau. Papa—who had arrived barely an hour ago bleeding and broken—now stood laughing with the infamous Black Mamba, their arms slung over each other's shoulders like frat brothers after a bender. The bloodstains on his chauffeur's uniform were the only evidence that the earlier horror hadn't been some fever dream. Adam and George sat slightly apart from the revelry, their postures rigid even in the plush lounge chairs. Adam's fingers drummed an uneven rhythm against his whiskey glass, while George's scarred eyebrow remained permanently arched in skepticism. What game are they playing now?The question burned through me as I traced the condensation o

The elevator's chime cut through the penthouse like a gunshot. I turned just as the doors slid open, revealing my father slumped against the polished brass interior. His chauffeur's uniform was drenched in blood, the dark crimson stark against the starched white of his shirt. One trembling hand pressed against his abdomen, while the other left smeared fingerprints along the mirrored wall as he struggled to stay upright. "They know," he gasped, his voice raw with pain. Adam moved before I could process the words, catching Papa as his knees gave out. Blood splattered across the marble foyer in grotesque Rorschach patterns as he half-carried, half-dragged him toward the living room. "George!" Adam's voice cracked through the penthouse like a whip. "Medkit. Now." I fell to my knees beside the sofa, my hands fluttering uselessly over the wound. The coppery scent of blood mixed with something darker—cordite. Gunpowder. Someone had shot him at close range. "Who did this?" My

The penthouse doors hissed shut behind me with the finality of a tomb sealing. The silence was deafening - not the peaceful quiet of an empty home, but the heavy stillness of a battlefield after the massacre. My reflection in the gilded hallway mirror looked like a stranger: hair half-fallen from its elegant updo, mascara smeared beneath hollow eyes, the emerald choker around my throat gleaming like a noose in the dim light.I reached up with trembling fingers, fumbling with the clasp of the damned necklace. The mechanism resisted, biting into my skin until blood welled beneath my nails. With a final twist, it came free, clattering to the marble floor with a sound like breaking bones."stupid damn choker"I hissed.Three hours later found me in Adam's private study, surrounded by the shattered remains of his prized bourbon collection. Crystal shards glittered like diamonds across the Persian rug, the sharp tang of alcohol mixing with the metallic scent of blood from my torn fingertips

The Lancaster Industries headquarters loomed over Park Avenue like a monument to old money and older sins. The building—a neoclassical monstrosity of limestone and wrought iron—bore the family crest above its doors: a lion rampant clutching a sheaf of wheat, its mouth dripping gold. I trailed behind Adam through the lobby, my heels sinking into Persian carpets older than my father's prison sentence. Portraits of dead Lancasters watched our progress with oil-painted eyes. "Try not to embarrass me," Adam murmured, his hand settling possessively on the small of my back. The heat of his touch burned through my silk blouse. " I didn't ask to be here Adam Lancaster"I coldly replied.sincerely,I didn't want to be anywhere close to these insane people."But you are wifey, besides you are now a Lancaster. Not just any Lancaster but my Wife.you are Lucia Adam Lancaster"he said with so much pride laced in voice.I was in no mood to argue so,I let it slide. At the elevator, a familiar fi

The cathedral doors parted to a flood of golden sunlight, the scent of orange blossoms and salt air swirling through the arched nave. My father's arm trembled beneath my grip as we took that first fateful step, his prison-bleached suit hanging loose on his gaunt frame. "Forgive me, mija," he whispered, his calloused thumb brushing my knuckles where they clutched his elbow. The weight of his guilt pressed between us heavier than the ten-carat diamond tiara Eve had fastened to my upswept hair. At the altar, Adam stood haloed in the stained-glass light, his black tuxedo tailored to lethal perfection. The way his gaze tracked my approach—like a wolf watching prey walk willingly into its jaws—sent heat coiling low in my belly despite myself. Behind me, Cara adjusted the endless train of my ivory gown, her maid-of-honor dress the exact shade of the Pacific at dawn. The bruises around her wrists from Lancaster security's "persuasion" had been artfully concealed beneath lace gloves. -
