Chapter 4

I put a lot of pressure on my phone, and gripped my hand so tightly. My heart was not just aching for the child that I was lost, it was also aching and screaming to the person who betrayed me. The person that I expected to be here and to share pain with me was pleasuring his ex-fiance.

I once touched my stomach gently and cried again. I was questioning myself for being so stupid for letting my baby die inside of me. I wiped my tears as I noticed that the door was clicking and suddenly the nurse got inside silently. She just looked at me with pitiful eyes and sympathy.

“You must be strong to handle this all alone?’’ a moment of silence broke.

I just look at her without any word that comes out in my mouth. My eyes are still heavy and my body is still exhausted.

“ The doctor said you can go home today,” after she checked on me. She just smiled at me and went out.

I took a heavy sigh and realized that I had been staying at the hospital for a couple of days and within those days, I never saw him visit me even once. I also checked my phone but none of his name was written on my phone screen as my notifications.

He really never cares for me.

So, I just decided to call one of his drivers to pick me up, since I didn’t call Lucas to fetch me ‘cause I know he is busy with scarlet.

After I called Lucas driver, I packed my things to get ready. As soon as I am done, I glance at my phone in the bed, then out of the blue. I looked for someone in my contact list, then I dialed his number.

“Hey, are you busy?’’ I said. But I just had a moment of silence from the other line before he spoke.

“Are you listening to me?’ I almost shouted.

“Hey, I am listening! My god Kayla, where have you been? It's been a long time since you called me.” he murmured but cut him off.

“Shhh, I'm not in the mood to listen to your so-called lectures. Can you arrange a Divorce paper for me?”

He paused for a while and took a deep breath. I know he is worried about me, but I need to do this.

“A divorce paper?” he asked again in disbelief. “Like seriously Kayla? Have you really think about this?”

“Yes, I am pretty hell serious,” I replied. I just can’t stay any longer like this. I can't even imagine myself staying with the man who shattered my life. Aside from that, his parents always looked down on me and whenever Lucas was not around in the house. My mother in-law treated me like a house maid in the mansion. And I am freaking sick of it.

“Chill! I know you're still in the hospital right now. Your mind is full of thoughts… Maybe you and Lucas need a serious conversation about this.” His voice softened and a mix of worry and frustration.

“No!” I snapped, “there was no serious conversation between us anymore. I’ve been thinking about this for almost five years and maybe it's time for me to stand up for myself. I can’t afford to spend another year becoming a stranger in his eyes. Especially now that Scarlet is back.”

“If that's what you really want, I'll help you.” He paused for a while and gave me a thrill.

“But in one condition,” my instincts were right. His help has not always been free.

“What's your condition?” I sneered!

“Go back to Robert's family.” I took a heavy breath. That family that I forgot a long time ago is now haunting me.

“Why are you doing this to me? I thought you’re my best friend?” I asked him, he knows how much I hate that family. Every time I remember them, an old memory of mine flashes back. Those hurtful words that they threw at me, and those physical abuses they have done. That's the reason why I ran away and now he wants me to go back?

“You ran away for the thought that you can escape everything, but look at now? Your own family is haunting you. They keep calling me to ask for your whereabouts.” I just close my eyes and breathe slowly.

“Alright!” After I said that, I ended the call. My fingers trembled as I put my hands down. And yes, I left with no choice, I don't want my best friend to drag me into my own mess. Since, there is nothing left to go back to. I am going to leave them. I am going to leave Lucas alone.

After a minute the driver came in. He greeted me politely. He got my things and carried them until we reached the car. I get inside the car and slamp myself in the passenger seat. I feel exhausted.

The whole ride felt so heavy just like the weather right now. The silence wrapped around me. I just heard soft music from the engine. While driving, I just kept my stare out of the window. Watching those cars ride so fast. Watching the busy street, and watching and observing those couples and families who walk beside the sidewalk happily. I keep wandering, this is the thing that I used to picture out for myself. My chest suddenly tightened. I wanted to cry, but it seems like my tears are now tired.

I looked in my rearview mirror, and I saw my driver staring at me. I compose myself.

“Just keep on driving!” I broke the silence.

The car just stops in the mansion, before I step out in the car. I took a deep breath and took a look at my wrist watch. It’s 10:00 am in the morning.

The driver stepped out quickly and opened the door for me. I plastered a heavy smile on my face before passing by the doorway. When I reach the living room, my blood suddenly boils for the things that I've witnessed.

The first thing that greeted my eyes was Lucas sitting comfortably on the couch. His hand wrapped around the waist of Scarlet. The woman who stole everything from me. When Lucas saw me. He stood up immediately.

“You just called me to pick you up,” he hissed.

“Wow! Do you even have the nerve to act like that? While I’m the one suffering, trying to figure out how to face everything happening? Amazing! You’re really such a worthless man. Just because that woman showed up, you’ve already become like this? You change a lot!”

“Be careful with your words, Kayla!” And for the first time in our five years, he’s now calling me by my first name.

“I know! That bitch is your woman, Lucas! Don’t make me stupid all these years!” I saw scarlet smirking and because of that, I suddenly lost my control, and before I knew it, my right hand had already landed on Scarlet’s face.

The moment I looked at Lucas, his eyes were burning in anger. It seems like he's ready to set me on fire, to burn me in hell.
