Chapter 5

“Damn it, Kayla! You're just too much!” his soft palm landed on my face. I barely touched my face. I felt like it welled up because of too much pressure. But I can handle this pain compared to the pain they have been feeling right now.

“Lucas…” I called his name full of frustration and irritation.

“How dare you!?” my voice almost cracked and trembled.

But he just stood in front of me, his eyes glaring at me. His jaw tightens, and feels like he is controlling himself to do something worse.

“Please, explain to me Kayla? Why do you slap Scarlet? She is just here because we have a meeting about our business. And you are acting like you’ve been hurt? If you are hurt because you lost something on you… blame yourself don't blame others for your stupidity!” he barked at me. He is willing to do everything just to protect Scarlet.

I bit my lower lip in anger. My legs become weaker. “ What! Have you heard what you said? For God sake we lost our baby and you're just acting like nothing happened?! And you still had a nerve to drag that woman into our mansion? Now, tell me? Have you ever loved me? Where is your fucking loyalty?!”

“How dare you question my love for you?” He slapped me big time. His hand was crashing down on my face and I was rubbing my face due to its unbearable pain. My eyes started to blur because of an impact and my tears as well started to stream down uncontrollably.

“Is this how you are going to protect me? Oh! Thanks, I really felt it and appreciated it.” I stood up firmly and said sarcastically and walked away.

“W-wait! Where are you going? Are you not going to apologize to Scarlet?” When I heard him talking behind my back. I stopped walking upstairs and without any glance, I answered him.

“I just said sorry to the people who deserve it, and Scarlet is not one of them.” I said before I continue. I just heard Lucas screaming my name, but I have no time to turn my back on them.

I get inside our room and slam myself to the bed. I took a heavy breath and roamed my eyes in every corner. Then I rolled to the bed and covered my mouth then shouted.

A minute later, I noticed that the door burst open in a loud bang. I could feel her presence and the scent of his lavender perfume. I never flinch ‘cause I know it was him. He’s here to scold me again.

“Kayla,” a soft voice lingered in my ears. I could only hear his heavy sigh. The cold demeanor that I saw a while ago suddenly disappeared. As I heard his sweet and monotone voice my heart became weaker. My heart that once wrapped with an ice slowly melting.

“Look! I'm so sorry If I reacted that way.” He touched and gently rubbed my hair.

“I was shocked, I just never thought you could slap Scarlet like that. She is just being nice to me.”

“And if you're just upset just because I didn't call you when you're in the hospital. Okay, I'm so sorry. I just lost my mind and I got so busy with our company.”

“Really? Or you’re so busy working on Scarlet?” my voice is sharp and almost crack.

“What are you talking about? I did everything to give you that you deserve. The lavish life that I handed to you, it's because of my hard work.”

“Then, are you now counting all the things that you gave me, including your love?” I raise my eyebrows as I face him.

“Of course not!”

“If that's the case, why do I felt like I’m just a second choice whenever she is around?”

“Because you're pushing me away, Kayla!”

“No, Lucas!” I stood up from bed “you're the one who pushes me away by always choosing her all the time.” I looked at his eyes, and for the first time, I saw a hesitation in his eyes. It feels like he regrets marrying me.

“If you can’t choose me to be your wife, stop acting like you're too protected husband!” I shouted and walked away, but before I could pass through the doorway. He held my hand and hugged my back. He even buried his face on my neck that made me teary-eyed.

“I’m so sorry!” a moment of silence between us. I bit my lower lip to prevent my tears from streaming.

And yes, I know in myself that I could never leave and he knows it. But, I am just thinking of how long I am going to endure this kind of setup.

After a minute, the phone rang and he hurried and snatched his phone from his pocket and before he could answer it. I saw Scarlet's name on his phone screen.

He immediately let go of my embrace and looked at me. Before I could say anything, he already turned back to me and answered the call.

“Alright, I’ll be there in a minute!” That was the only thing I heard before the call ended.

“I'll go back to the office, something happened. If you need anything, our housemaid is there to assist you.” He said and rushed outside our room. No goodbye kiss, not even an “I love you”. Just cold and empty silence.

I just heard the slump door and went to the window to watch him from afar. He is now driving from the office and now my mind is about to explode from thoughts that are running through my head.

I’m wondering, is he hiding something from me? Were all of these just Alibis to cover the truth?
