I hadn’t slept since Kalen stopped Evelyn from torturing me to death.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the moment her blade froze midair, her eyes narrowing when she realized someone had interfered, and the way she looked at him suspiciously after that has been haunting me since.

The cell is awfully quiet, as always. Karl and Molly are both asleep in the cages next to mine, or pretending to be. None of us really sleep here. When I hear footsteps, my heart starts racing. I sit up fast, pulling my knees close.

But it’s not Evelyn this time. It’s Kalen, again. He looks worse than before, his eyes red, clothes covered in soot and blood.

“What are you doing?” I whisper. “You shouldn’t be here. If she sees you…”

He cuts me off, pulling a key from his pocket. “There’s no time.”

The sound of the lock clicking open feels unreal. For a second, I just stare at the open door, too shocked to move.

“You’re serious,” I say, my voice trembling.
