This is why she left. She didn’t leave to travel the world; she left because she was mated to her best friend's boyfriend, and he clearly wasn’t planning on giving me up.

How long did he think this could go on? How long did he plan on using my best friend as a side piece? And how long would it have taken for the roles to be reversed? How long until I was the woman he was sneaking to his bed?

“Young love isn’t built to last.” The Shadow Alpha whispers beside me as we make our way down the stairs, and he leads me to the patio. The fresh air hits my skin and I finally feel awake. I finally realize this really is not a dream.

I reach for the railing, and lean my body over it, looking out at the pristine garden. I glance back at him for a moment, then look back at the soft flowers. “I didn’t think we were forever… But I wasn’t prepared for… That.” I whisper, and he comes to stand closer to me.

His elbow brushes mine and I suck in a breath as electricity shoots through my arm, and I pull away slightly.

He turns his head towards me, “You’ll find someone better. I’m sure of it.”

My eyebrows knit, and I turn away from him. He chuckles, “What?” He asks, and I shake my head. “It’s nothing. I’ve just heard… You’re nicer than they say.” I tell him, and he laughs, “I’m not nice, Sweetheart. It’d just be a shame to lose a potential recruit to heartbreak.”

I stand up straight and look at him, “You think there’s a chance I could be recruited?” I ask him, shock evident on my face. He nods, “I think you need to work on the savage part of the race, because the Lupa Elite champions won’t let you get away with just avoiding it like you did here, but yeah, there’s a chance.”

The doors to the patio open and my father walks through them. His eyes slide to the Shadow Alpha and ignoring him completely he looks back at me, “Sam’s looking for you.” He tells me, and I swallow.

“I’m ready to go home.” I tell him instead, his eyebrows knit, “They haven’t announced the winners yet.” I shrug, “I’m ready to go home.” I tell him and he gives me a slow nod, “Okay.”

“Thanks, Dad. I’ll meet you inside in a moment.” I tell him and he glances at the shadow Alpha once more before nodding and heading inside.

“Dad?” He asks once the doors close, my head tilts, “Foster, but closest thing to family I have.” I tell him, and his jaw ticks.

I look at him skeptically, then shake my head. “It was nice meeting you.” I tell him, and he nods, “You too, Thea. Can’t wait to catch up at the competition. Better bring your A-game.”

I smile turning away from him and walking towards the doors, I stop at the threshold, just before opening them, and turn my head back towards him. “You don’t need to worry about my heart; it’s not easily broken. I’ll be at the competition.” I start to turn around, but I stop turning to smirk at him, “And I’ll win.”

I see the smirk rising on the side of his lip before I turn around and walk back inside the pack house.

I walk straight to my father as he talks to the Alpha, nodding a hello to him and giving him as much of a smile as I can manage at the moment.

“We need to speak.” He tells me, and I sigh, then nod.

My father and I follow him all the way into his office, and as soon as we walk inside, Sam stands up and heads towards me.

My teeth clench and I step away from him. I’m not sure why this is the Alphas problem, but I think I’m about to find out.

As soon as my mates see me, they all shift back to human. Each one staring at me, and all of them silent. I look between the four of them, my body already reacting to theirs. Something inside me begging for their touch. It’s nothing I haven’t felt before. I’ve wanted them from the start, wanted their hands on my skin, but now it feels… Heightened. Unbearable, to last another single second without them close to me.But I continue to look between them. I don’t know how to do this… Do I choose? Will one be mad if I choose the other first? I’ve never really had this problem before, but with the distrust running through them right now. I’m scared to make the wrong move here.“We know you feel it now, Thea. Our wolves can feel the bond even stronger now. Tell us what to do.” Orion whispers, and my eyes meet his. I sigh, not sure how to convey my fear without them thinking I want someone more, when I don’t.It doesn’t matter the downfalls I’ve had with them; the bond is pulling me towards on

‘Running isn’t going to help anything.’ I tell Sage, who proceeds to scoff into my mind. ‘Look who’s talking. All you do is run.’ She snaps. My eyebrows knit. ‘That’s not true.’She chuckles, but it’s humorless. ‘You ran time and time again when we first met our mates. You ran from the witch. You ran from your mates and went back to Sam. You are always running away from them and now you have the nerve to shame me for doing the same. For doing what you’ve trained me to do. You leave when things get hard. Things were starting to get hard, so I pull away before they can scare you too much, and yet, I’m the problem?’My head shakes, ‘I didn’t leave them for Sam.’ I snap, and I swear I can hear her eyes roll. ‘You didn’t have to leave, Thea. You could have dealt with it together. Why do you think we have four mates? It’s not just so we can have a giant fuck fest. We need each of them! And each of them needs you.’‘I’m not just scared of the quote, fuck fest.’ I tell her and she chuckles, ‘

Cyrus and Orion’s wolves are both midnight black, beautiful and with their gorgeous blue eyes, they look royal in a sense. Colt and Vince are both the color of darkened ash, having gray perfectly placed around their bodies, breaking up the black in their fur. They’re all huge, towering over my form, just as if we were humans.I can’t believe I’ve never taken the time to get to know their wolves. They’ve been wanting me since we first met and yet they’ve held them back to help me settle and feel more secure around here.‘You’re nearly invisible.’ Cyrus says into my mind, his blue eyes trained on my wolf. I look down at my paw, I’m black, but not just black the darkest shade of black. Vantablack. ‘If it wasn’t for your eyes.’ Cyrus says in amazement.I look back up at him. ‘They’re purple. Like when your phoenix comes out, they seem to glow.’ Cyrus answers my unasked question. ‘I have a wolf.’ I tell him, shock evident in my voice.I honestly can’t believe it. I’ve always thought I was

The healer walks towards us instantly, but my mind is a whirlwind. I don’t want to be here. Somewhere in my brain, I know I don’t need to be here. Regardless of the pain in my stomach ricocheting through my entire body.Orion grabs my restless body and tries to keep me still while the healer tries to place his hands on me. He barely lasts a second before he pulls back with a pained sound. He looks at the burn on his hand, then back at me with wide eyes. I shake my head, “Orion, I can’t be here. I need air.” I rasp, trying to stand, trying to make it to the door.I fail.Falling to the ground and wreathing in pain, when I hear a bone snap. The surprise is enough to dull the pain for a moment, but then I cry out as another breaks. What is happening?‘Hello, Thea. My name is Sage.’ The new voice travels through my mind, waking me up to what is happening. And as if it clicks for Orion at the same time, he speaks, “She’s shifting.” He whispers, I’m not sure if it’s fear or amazement I hear

No.I take a step forward, but Vince pulls me back. Anger flares through me and I grab the arm holding and he let’s go hissing in pain. I don’t bother seeing what just happened as I move closer to the window.I get there, rising on my tippy toes to peak through. My eyes capture on the woman… She looks so much like me, but older, more knowledgeable about life. She’s not a dumb woman; you can see it in the calculating in her eyes as she thinks over the deal. But if she’s not dumb, why can’t she see what she means by that? Why can’t she see the fact she’s talking about false love? She doesn’t care if it’s real…I look into the corner, the little girl standing there, her hand on her cheek and her eyes on the ground… Silent.Silent, as they talk about what to do with her. Silent, as they discuss how her life is going to play out. Silent, as they discuss the best way for her to be a pawn in all the games they play.I watch her with pity… But it’s me. That little girl, she’s me. Have I ever

We walk through the trees, making our way quickly as Vince pulls me behind him and I try to keep up. He quickly pulls up to the side, hiding behind a giant willow tree, and puts his finger on his lips, signaling for me to be quiet.I have so many questions… And for some reason my number one question is, shouldn’t they be able to scent us, we’re so close to the small cabin. I guess if they’re not paying attention…“Please!” The woman’s voice hits me like a ton of bricks because… I’ve heard it before. I don’t know when, and I don’t know where, but the voice sounds as familiar to me as breathing. My head snaps up, as I try to look into the window I can barely see her through.I’m too far away…I make a move to move closer, but Vince keeps me still, leaning over closely to my ear and whispering, “Seeing you could change everything. Colt wasn’t wrong about changing history and unless you’re willing to possibly lose them… You need to stay here.”I swallow deeply, squinting my eyes to try an
