LOGINThere are many things in Thea’s world that cannot be explained, but it’s never bothered her. Not until her world flips upside down and secrets start coming out from the shadows. When the Alphas of the Shadow pack start asking questions, start demanding answers even if they don’t come from her. She realizes she can’t stay in the dark about her own life anymore, no matter how badly she doesn’t want to know the truth. The day I’ve been waiting for, for as long as I can remember.
I’ve trained everyday for years to be here, and now I’m standing at the starting line.
Unlike in the human world where football and baseball are the main event, in the wolf packs, we have three.
Moonlit Boxing, where they battle in both forms, shifting back and forth easily finding a way to take down their opponents.
Then there’s Apex hunting, where they work in teams to find the biggest game and bring it back. They spend a week in the wild and whoever comes back with the most wins. It’s not all about size though, there was one year a team brought back so many squirrels and rabbits that they ended up beating the team that had brought back ten bears.
Then there’s my contest, the Savage Speed Race. The goal is to be the first one through the finish line, but the catch is short of murder… You can do whatever you want to your opponents to ensure your victory. There are rules, like no weapons, no outside help. It’s just the list of what you can’t do, isn’t very long.
Which poses a problem for me because I never received my wolf. So, what I can do to them, and what they can do to me are two very different things.
No matter though, I have worked like hell to anticipate and prepare for anything they might throw at me.
I can do this.
Strength, speed and stealth, three traits wolves live by.
We’re all competing for the chance to compete at the Lupa Elite Shadow pack competition. The competition is held every five years, I was too young for the last one, but now I’m twenty- one and more than ready to make a name for myself.
Anything other than wolf-less freak will do.
Honestly, it hasn’t all been bad. My boyfriend, Sam, has a lot to do with that though. As future Alpha of the pack, he keeps most of the snide comments and hatred at bay.
My foster father helps a lot too. After losing my foster mother when I was ten, he’s made his entire life about me. Making sure I keep up with training, and that I have everything I need to make a name for myself.
He’s my biggest supporter and the closest thing I’ll ever have to family.
They’ve told me I descended from wolves, but my lack thereof makes me believe differently. They won’t tell me more though, I just know I’m not from this pack and my parents were wolves. They have no idea why my wolf has yet to emerge.
I choose to believe I’m okay with all of that. It’s not something I want to concern myself with, when things could have ended a lot worse for someone like me. I was lucky, getting placed with a family that actually cares about me and has done nothing short of taking care of me most of my life.
“You got this, Thea! Show them your wild side!” My head swings to the side, looking over at my best friend. Kiera, she left the pack when we turned eighteen, traveling to different packs, different species, and human lands to explore more of the world. I’ve missed her like crazy, and I’m so excited that she’s back, it’s like things haven’t changed between us at all.
I smile at her, then look next to her at Sam as they both stand there with a smile on their face watching me get ready for the race. Something inside me shivers, my gaze momentarily scans the crowd, but I come up short at what the feeling is.
I turn away from them, needing to focus. I can’t let anyone distract me. I refuse to let anyone distract me from my goal. ‘You got this, Love.’ The voice in my head whispers.
I face forward, getting into position, then the gun shoots into the sky.
The race is on.
Pity fills his vision, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.” He curses, then pulls me to start walking again.I rush to keep up, “Two months?” I ask, and he looks at me, then forward again. Two months? We get to the healers, and I rush inside and find my father sitting in a chair. His face scrunched in pain as the healer works on his leg.I fall into his arms, and he wraps his around me the best he can.I can’t stop the tears from falling once I’m with him.“I’m fine. I’m fine.” He whispers, pulling back and looking me over, “How are you?” He asks, and tears flood my eyes again. “It was Sam. He left us down there for a month after Alpha died.” I cry, and he pulls me back into his chest. “I know, I know. It’s all going to be okay.” He whispers soothingly.I pull back wiping the tears from my eyes.He pulls his leg back from the healer, “Sit. You need checked.” I shake my head, “I’m fine.”He shakes his head. “I heard your screams. You don’t heal like wolves. I can’t imagine how much
Shadows encase us, covering the world around us, “Thea!” I barely hear before the shadows completely close around us, blocking it out.The one I met grabs my waist and holds onto me tightly, “My father.” I rasp, wide eyes turning up towards him. He nods, “He’s coming.”I take a deep breath and the feeling of falling takes over all my senses.I grab onto the Alpha for dear life, throwing my face into his chest and he pulls me tighter. The jolt when we hit solid ground, has me falling back, but the other Alpha catches us both as I try to pull both of us to the ground. “We’ll need to work on her shadow travel.” He tells his brother, and I finally get my bearings.I look around, dark lands, my eyes darting in all directions. “Your father’s being taken directly to the healers. We’ll take the scenic route to get you healed as well.”I eyes knit, “I’m fine. I just want to make sure he’s okay. Thank you for taking him.” I tell them, he nods. The other Alpha turns me towards him; his hand reac
Wrong.I stand in front of the double doors, the threat of my father and the guards standing behind me, looming over me like a dark cloud. My entire body shakes, my palms sweaty and the make-up plastered over my face to cover my bruises, melting. This isn’t how this is supposed to go.I won’t lie and say I never saw myself marrying Sam. I just always knew it wasn’t a possibility… But with his dad gone…“I can’t do this.” I whisper, turning to the woman. Her hands land on both my shoulders. “You have to… You have to, Thea…” She leaves the rest unsaid. My wide eyes turn towards the doors. The music starts up and they start to open. I take a deep breath and look through the doors. There’s only five people in attendance. My eyes search the small crowd, then land on my father. Beaten and broken, barely sitting up next to a guard.A small gasp escapes me, and his eyes well with tears. I suck in a sharp intake of breath and turn towards Sam. He smiles at me from down the aisle, reaching his
To say the Alpha was unhappy about my father and my decision, would be an understatement. The days have bled together; I don’t know if I’ve been down here a week or a year.Time is fickle, and the amount of bruises, scars or broken bones that have healed, even if they’re healing wrong should give me some indication, but the pain all just blurs together now.If they’ve done this to me, I can’t imagine what they’ve done to my father. He heals faster than I do, I’m sure they’re working him over twice as much. They’ve kept us apart down here. I can just barely hear his groans of pain from the next hall over. The door to my cell slams open, I jump. I didn’t even hear anyone coming down the hall. I look over at the door and realize why. A petite girl stands there with a garment bag in one hand and a glass of water in the other.I’m far past caring if I’m being poisoned, I grab the water and chug it down, handing it back to her. She smiles, “Come.” She tells me, and with a skeptical look on
