The Interogation

8:00 am

Nicole fidgeted as the crowd swarmed in. They chorused different questions and she shuddered as she tried to avoid them.

The police officers shielded her from the crowd and led her safely into the interrogation room.

Shane was waiting. His back was turned against the table as he leafed through some leaves of paper.

He turned around as soon as Nicole was led in. Nicole looked around and her gaze fell on Shane.

"Shane Wilbert?" She called out in disbelief.

"Why are you here? What the heck is going on?" Nicole asked dryly.

"You still don't get it. I am detective Shane and you are under arrest for the murder of your husband; Trevor Sawyer..."

"Shut the crap! What the hell are you talking about?" Nicole challenged heatedly. She sprang to her feet but she felt dizzy and sat down slowly.

"You have the right to an attorney and you have the right to remain silent. Your testimony can stand against you in the court of law," Shane said and took his seat

"Stop the gibberish…where is my husband?" Nicole demanded.

Shane smirked. "Stop the pretense! you piece of crap! We have your maid in our custody, she told us the truth already," Shane yelled.

"What did you do to her? Esther can't even talk," Nicole said in concern.

"Why did you kill your husband? I it because of your domestic issues? Shane asked.

"How dare you? Why are you doing this! It's been 8 years now, haven't you got...." Nicole started but Shane banged the table hard.

"Don't you ever mention our past if you want to get out of this," Shane said with gritted teeth.

"Now answer my question! Why did you kill your husband!?" He yelled.

"I don't know. I mean… I can't remember a thing," Nicole responded timidly and shook her head slightly.

"Feigning ignorance will not get you out of this," Shane warned. "Tell me the last thing you remember," he added.

"Esther had just arrived from break and I wanted to cook dinner for my husband. He was supposed to visit. When he came around, we had an argument and he left angrily. I told Esther to leave and I went after him. In no time, he discovered that I was in pursuit and I lost him.

I got drunk at a bar and hired a cab back home. The house felt empty and I felt lonely, hungry and tired. I called Esther to come over. I wanted her to help with the cooking and I needed her company too. I was still cooking when the light suddenly went off. It was all dark," Nicole said and clamped her eyes shut.

"It went dark and dark and…and ...nothing....," she said and opened her eyes.

"Your husband was found dead on the bed and you were found unconscious right on the floor," Shane challenged.

"What do you mean!? Trevor wasn't even home. He ditched me on the road and he did not return home," Nicole lamented.

"When we arrived, your husband's car was parked outside the compound..and your car is yet to be found," Shane supplied.

"No way. He never made it in. I didn't see him..and my car? I left it at the bar's parking lot," Nicole shook her head vigorously.

"And your maid? Did she come around?" Shane asked.

"No," Nicole said and Shane heaved a sigh.

"Were you expecting any visitors that night?" Shane questioned.

"No. Who visits at such odd hours," Nicole muttered.

Shane brought up his phone as it was ringing. It was Bob. He had sent him back to the forensic lab with Esther's novel.

"Hello Shane. The fingerprints on the novel are a match with the unidentified fingerprints on the knife," Bob said from his end.

"Okay. Good job. Thanks Bob and how is the autopsy coming up?" Shane asked.

"Nothing. There is not going to be any autopsy. The deceased father did not allow it," Bob supplied.

"What!?" Shane yelled.

"Yes, boss," Bob said.

"Alright," Shane responded and hung up. He heaved a sigh and made some signals into the camera.

"How much did you trust your maid," he asked Nicole.

"The camera! There is a camera in the compound!" Nicole yelled.

"It is broken," Shane responded dryly. "How much did you trust your maid?" He repeated.

"She is a sweet and innocent girl. She has been with me for about six years," Nicole responded.

"I am sorry about your father's death. It's been two years now," Shane said casually and reclined into his seat.

There was rustling at the door. The door opened slowly and Esther was led in.

She walked towards Shane but she suddenly stopped when her gaze fell on Nicole.

She shrieked and let out a scrambled noise that was supposed to be a dreadful scream.

The officials held her down as she made her way towards the exit.

"Put her in cuffs and take her away," Shane commanded.

"It seems she remembers what you don't... How did you know Esther Zealot? How did she come to work for you?" Shane asked.

"I don't know much about her… Trevor hired her," Nicole responded.
