Chapter 49 - A Melody Coming Home

Three months passed at a steady tempo—not so fast that they went unnoticed, but not so slow that longing became torture either. In Yogyakarta, the basement studio at the Swasemesta Conservatory became a silent witness to Rimba's hard work as he finished the final draft of that contemporary orchestral piece. Every time exhaustion crept in near midnight, the small guitar pick engraved with both their initials, sitting on his desk, became an anchor reminding him of the promise made at the Vienna airport. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the world, Michi poured every ounce of her focus into her final conservatory exams, letting the friction of the piano keys and the pulse of her own inner rhythm fuse together perfectly under the guidance of her European professors. The thousands of kilometers of distance and the difference in time zones no longer stood as a dividing wall, but as a forge testing exactly how strong the foundation of feeling they'd built on the wreckage of their past egos really was.

Those days proved that a mature love doesn't demand a possessive kind of ownership, but a trust that gives room to grow. Rimba learned to quiet his own trauma, while Michi learned to stop hiding her true identity behind a mask of porcelain perfection.

Until, on an afternoon at the close of the fourth month, Yogyakarta's sky welcomed the arrival of the plane carrying Michi back to her home country. Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo looked as busy as usual as the international arrivals door swung wide open. The warm, humid tropical air greeted her skin at once, a sharp contrast to the last traces of Europe's cold wind still clinging to Michi's memory. Among the crowd of people waiting to pick up arrivals, holding name signs and bouquets of flowers, a man in a dark leather jacket stood upright, his heartbeat thundering no less loudly than the roar of the plane's engines that had just touched down on the runway.

Rimba tightened his grip on a small bundle of purple statice flowers—a flower that symbolizes eternal remembrance and loyalty—which he had bought on the way to the airport. His gaze scanned sharply over every face stepping out from behind the automatic sliding doors, never once shifting away for even a second, afraid of missing even the smallest moment.

And there, the figure he had only been able to see through his phone screen or reach for in the shadow of a tormenting longing for the past three months, finally appeared.

Michi pushed her luggage cart out wearing comfortable casual clothes, her thick coat already packed away in her suitcase, leaving behind a thin knit sweater fitted neatly against her body. Her long hair fell loose and beautiful, and a backpack hung over her shoulder. The exhaustion from more than a dozen hours of long-haul flight evaporated instantly without a trace, replaced by an overwhelming sparkle of happiness the moment her eyes caught sight of the man standing behind the crowd barrier.

Michi's footsteps stopped instantly. So did Rimba's, who immediately pushed forward without a care for the crowd of people around them anymore.

In that second, the world inside the arrivals terminal seemed to slow down. There was no more sound of luggage wheels rolling, no more airport loudspeaker; there was only two pairs of eyes locking onto each other's longing after being separated by continents for so long.

Without any cue, they broke into a small run toward each other. The luggage cart was left simply stopped in the middle of the walkway. And when the distance between them finally dissolved without a trace, Rimba immediately pulled Michi's body into a tight embrace, lifting her slightly off the floor while burying his face in the crook of the girl's neck, breathing in the distinctive scent he had only been able to imagine all this time.

Sobs of happiness broke free instantly inside that embrace, met by Rimba's small laugh, his voice trembling violently with an infinite gratitude and a flood of emotion he could no longer hold back behind his broad chest.

"Welcome home, Michi," Rimba whispered into Michi's ear, his voice thick with a love that was now truly whole, without a single gap left in it.

Before Michi could even reply, a gentle throat-clear wrapped in a small laugh sounded from beside them. Rimba loosened his embrace slightly, then turned around while still keeping an arm around Michi's shoulders. There, stood a middle-aged woman with a batik shawl draped elegantly over her shoulders—Maharani.

Michi's eyes went wide with shock for a second. A flush of red immediately crept up her tired cheeks; a wave of embarrassment struck her instantly at being caught crying, sobbing openly in Rimba's arms in a public place. She had been so consumed by longing that she hadn't even noticed the presence of the woman she respected most, not from the very start.

Remembering how Maharani had once become both a harbor and a quiet advisor who had woken Rimba up from the foolishness of his own ego months earlier, a wave of bashfulness rumbled through Michi's chest. But Maharani's expression showed absolutely no demand whatsoever. The middle-aged woman's eyes, in fact, looked glassy with tears, watching her with the warmest smile Michi had ever seen.

Seeing the awkwardness on Michi's face, Maharani didn't wait long. The woman spread both her arms wide open. Without hesitation, Michi released herself from Rimba's arms, stepped forward, and was immediately welcomed into the warm embrace of a mother. All that embarrassment and awkwardness melted away instantly, replaced by a sincerity that fully blessed her homecoming.

"Welcome home, sweetheart," Maharani whispered gently, stroking Michi's back with deep affection. "Rimba nearly gave Mama a headache every single night, pacing around unable to sleep waiting for you to come home from Vienna."

Rimba let out a small laugh, wrapping an arm familiarly around his mother's shoulders. "Oh my god, Ma, don't go exposing my secrets here," he protested in a tone both whiny and warm.

Michi laughed along too, hiding her face, still flushed red, in the crook of Maharani's shoulder. The weight of longing and awkwardness finally vanished completely, without a trace. The three of them stood side by side in the middle of the crowded airport, holding each other tightly in a warmth that erased every last bit of exhaustion. Under Yogyakarta's sky, welcoming the afternoon with open arms, their real new journey—without masks, without secrets, and now held within the full blessing of a complete family—officially began.

One year later. The main auditorium of the Swasemesta Music Conservatory was packed with visitors that night, far exceeding its normal capacity for the Graduating Class Culmination Night—an annual tradition in which the top graduates from each department are given one more chance to perform in front of the public before officially stepping out through their alma mater's gates. Strings of white fairy lights had been draped along the balcony railings for the occasion, and the smell of fresh flowers from the front-row arrangements drifted faintly all the way backstage.Backstage, Michiko Arunika Suryokusumo stood in front of a dressing mirror, wearing a long black gown, elegant yet simple. But unlike every formal performance she'd given over the past four years, this time there was one detail she had never once allowed to appear on an official conservatory stage before: a pair of drumsticks tucked neatly inside a small bag hanging from the side of her dressing chair

Two weeks passed since that night on the porch, and slowly, the rhythm of their life together began finding its shape again. The campaign video never resurfaced. Not because Surya had truly given up—Rimba knew his father well enough to know that a man like that never truly stops, only waits for a more advantageous moment. The last update to reach Rimba's ears was that his father's media team had their hands full managing the agenda ahead of next year's election season, and for the time being, neither Rimba's name nor Michi's was useful enough to bother with. The threat hadn't disappeared. It was only sleeping, waiting for a better time to wake up again. What he knew for certain was that, for the first time in years, he was no longer carrying every anxiety that surfaced from his father's shadow alone. Every time that name crossed his mind, he told Michi about it, sometimes Bayu too, sometimes Kelana over the long phone calls they'd started making a regular habit e

Michi was rearranging some sheet music in her room when the notification sound on her phone rang out—a message from Rimba, brief but different from the empty messages she'd been receiving so often lately, the kind that used to arrive hours late with nothing real inside them.I'm outside your house. Can I come in? I promise, this time I'll tell you everything. She stared at that screen for a long time before finally heading downstairs, opening the front door with a hand that trembled slightly. Rimba stood there, his face tired but his eyes showing something different from the past few weeks—no longer that evasive look, but a seriousness he rarely ever showed. They sat on the front porch, among the potted flowers Akari usually tended, lit by the dim yellow light that evening, the same porch light that had watched over every homecoming and every quiet argument this family had ever had."Chi, I'm sorry," Rimba said, starting with

Maharani's dance studio was still lit even though the hour had grown late, dim lights illuminating the wooden floor her students usually used to practice Pakarena dance in the afternoons. The building was otherwise silent, the kind of silence that only settles into a place built for music and movement once both have gone quiet for the night. Rimba found his mother alone there, sitting cross-legged in the middle of the empty room, staring silently at the large mirror reflecting her own image back at her."Not asleep yet, Ma?" Rimba stepped inside, sitting down on the floor not far from his mother."Hard to sleep with a head this full of thoughts." Maharani turned, smiling thinly at the sight of her eldest son's tired face, far more tired than he usually let show. "You look the same way, Rim. What's wrong?"For a few moments, Rimba simply sat still, staring at his own reflection in the mirror, trying to arrange words that had felt too heavy to say out loud for wee

Michi hadn't spoken much since that night in the studio. She still went to her classes as usual, still smiled in front of her parents, still answered every question at the dinner table the way she always had, but Bayu—who had grown up learning to read his sister since childhood—knew perfectly well that something was wrong behind that thin, forced smile. He didn't ask right away. Bayu wasn't the type to push someone to talk before they were ready, a restraint he'd learned the hard way after his first, clumsy attempt to interrogate Rimba in this same basement months earlier. But this time, he pointed his old habit—following political news, digging through the track records of public figures purely as material for casual class debates—toward one name that had kept appearing on his social media timeline these past few weeks: Surya Pratama. That night, in his room, Bayu sat for hours combing through old news archives, political discussion forums, eve

Ten days passed since that meeting, and the campaign video that had briefly caused an uproar was finally taken down quietly, as though it had never existed at all. For everyone else, the problem felt resolved. For Rimba, that was exactly where his unease truly began. He knew his father wasn't going to stop that easily. And the only solution he could think of to make sure Michi wasn't targeted again was to distance himself—to make the two of them look no longer close enough to be turned into material for any story. He started canceling plans one by one, quietly, without ever framing it as what it actually was. The excuse of "a lot of studio work" became the sentence that left his mouth most often. Replies to messages that used to come quickly now arrived hours later, short, half-hearted. Even in the basement studio, the very place that had once witnessed the beginning of all their secrets, Rimba started showing up alone at odd hours more often, leaving behind mess
