Chapter 3

Moly
The temperature in the basement dropped fast.

Winter nights were already freezing, and without heat, the basement quickly turned into an icebox.

I drifted back downstairs and looked at my body.

The blood had dried almost black, and my skin had turned gray.

Several cockroaches crawled out of a crack in the wall and across my face.

I tried to brush them away, but I couldn't touch anything.

Upstairs, laughter filled the house.

Arthur opened a vintage bottle of red wine he had saved for years to celebrate Christmas.

Lillian raised her glass and smiled shyly.

"Dad, Mom, Edward, here's to our family always being happy."

Family?

Right. They're the real family.

I'm just the extra one.

After several glasses of wine, Lillian suddenly set hers down and looked away.

"Mom, there's something I've always wanted."

Katherine set down her fork and looked at her lovingly.

"What do you want, Lillian? I'd give you the stars if I could."

Lillian bit her lip and said quietly, "I've had my eye on Chloe's diamond bracelet. It belonged to Grandma, and I've always loved it. But Chloe said Grandma left it to her and that she'd rather die than give it to me."

Katherine's expression darkened.

"What right does she have to keep that bracelet all to herself?"

Edward stood, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Wait here, Lillian. I'll get it for you. Everything Chloe has comes from us anyway."

I watched Edward stride upstairs toward my room, a bitter laugh rising inside me.

Grandma had placed that diamond bracelet on my wrist with her own hands just before she died.

Now Edward was going to take it from me just to please another woman.

Edward kicked my door open.

My room was almost empty. There was only a bed, a closet, and nothing else.

He yanked open the drawers and searched through everything.

At last, he found the bracelet in a box at the bottom of a drawer.

Then he found another velvet box.

It was the birthday present I had planned to give him the following month.

The cufflinks inside had cost me almost all my savings.

When I bought them, I still imagined Edward smiling at me like he used to, praising the gift before pulling me into a kiss.

I watched Edward open the box, and a tiny spark of hope stirred inside me.

He glanced at the cufflinks, then tossed the box into the trash.

"You expect me to wear this cheap trash?"

My heart would have broken if it could still beat.

I had paid for them with money I earned from working while I was still in school. After Lillian came home, my parents stopped giving me an allowance. I worked two part-time jobs until I'd saved 2,000 dollars, all because I wanted to see Edward smile at me again.

Now he threw them away like garbage.

Edward took the bracelet downstairs and fastened it around Lillian's wrist himself.

"It's beautiful. This bracelet should have been yours all along."

Lillian stroked the bracelet, her face lighting up.

"Thank you, Edward. I love it."

Katherine watched and nodded, satisfied.

"Amy, go check if that ungrateful girl in the basement has admitted she was wrong. If she's willing to beg Lillian for forgiveness, we'll let it go."

One year later, on Christmas night, I drifted above the cemetery and watched Edward come stumbling toward my grave. He was little more than skin and bone. His clothes were torn and filthy, and he smelled awful. He clutched the cufflinks and the diamond bracelet in one hand.Edward reached my headstone and fell to his knees. He wiped the dust from the stone with slow, careful strokes."Merry Christmas, Chloe. I've come to spend Christmas with you again."He pulled a crushed cake from inside his coat and carefully set it in front of the headstone."I'm sorry. I couldn't afford a good cake. I found this on the street today. It's sweet. Will you try some?"He kept talking as tears fell onto the stone.Without warning, he pulled out a rusty dagger. Then he drove it into his thigh."Chloe, this is the first wound I owe you. When I kicked you, it must have hurt so much."He yanked the dagger free and drove it into his arm."This is the second, for being too blind to see that monster for what

Three months later, the case that had shocked the city went to trial.I hovered above the courtroom and looked down at the three defendants.Arthur received 15 years for criminally negligent homicide. As soon as the sentence was announced, he began convulsing and suffered a stroke. The stroke left one side of his face drooping and robbed him of the ability to speak clearly. He would spend the rest of his life in a prison infirmary, unable to care for himself.Lillian was convicted of multiple counts of fraud, assault, and criminal solicitation. She received a life sentence. When she heard the verdict, she broke down.Lillian dropped to her knees at the defense table and begged, "Your Honor, I was wrong! I know that now! I'm still young. I don't want to be locked up for life! Arrest Edward! He helped them! He had Chloe locked in that basement!"Hoping for a lighter sentence, she began blaming everyone else.Edward shot to his feet in the spectator gallery.Thick gauze covered his wrist,

I never should have believed that monster. I never should have treated you that way." He slapped himself again and again as he spoke. He hit himself so hard that his face quickly began to swell.A caregiver wheeled Katherine into the chapel. The shock had completely broken her. She had lost her mind. She clutched an old sweater I had worn as a child and hummed an off-key nursery rhyme."Be good, Chloe. Mommy

The look on Edward's face frightened Lillian, and she instinctively backed away."Edward, what's wrong? You're scaring me..."Edward grabbed her by the throat and slammed her against the stair rail."You vicious monster! How many lies have you told us? You faked your sickness and took her blood. You framed her over and over. You drove her to her death!"His grip tightened, and Lillian's face turned red.She clawed at his hand as tears poured down her cheeks."I didn't... I don't know what you're talking about... Edward, let go! You're hurting me..."Officers rushed forward and pulled Edward away.Edward struggled wildly against them."Let me go! I'm going to kill this bitch! She killed Chloe! She did it!"Lillian collapsed onto the stairs, clutching her throat and coughing hard.Panic flashed across her face when she saw the journal in the officer's hand. But she quickly recovered, pointed at Edward, and sobbed, "Don't frame me! The police and medical examiner soon sealed off the mansion. What had begun as a warm family Christmas was now a nightmare.Arthur sat slumped on the couch, his head in his hands, unable to speak.Katherine had been sedated and was asleep upstairs.Edward stood frozen in the corner, watching investigators zip my body into a body bag.The medical examiner approached the lead officer and removed his mask."She had a severe fracture in her neck. That injury killed her. I estimate she died about five days ago, on Christmas night. She also shows signs of long-term malnutrition and several old bruises."The officer frowned at Arthur."You locked your daughter in the basement for five days, and not one of you noticed she was dead? How did she break her neck?"Arthur turned pale and began trembling. He stammered as he tried to defend himself. "S-she fell down the stairs on her own. We thought she was sulking and pretending to be dead, so we locked her in the basement to teach her a lesson. We

The stench of rotting flesh hit Edward the moment the door opened.Edward clapped a hand over his nose and mouth, then staggered back in disgust."Chloe! What the hell are you doing in there? You think stinking up the basement will get you out of trouble? Get out here!"The basement was pitch dark.A sliver of light from the hallway revealed a dark shape on the floor.Amy stood behind Edward, pinching her nose."Oh my God. Miss Hart must have made a mess of herself. That's disgusting. Mr. Blake, don't ruin your shoes. I'll get someone to clean it up."Edward cut her off with a dismissive wave. "Lillian is fighting for her life. We don't have time for this."He strode into the basement, his leather shoes thudding across the floor.I hovered above him, watching coldly as he approached my corpse. With the water and power cut off, the basement had become stuffy and foul.My body had badly decomposed and was swollen beyond recognition. In the dim light, Edward reached me and kicked my leg.
