Chapter Six

"Adalyn!" Alix whispered in worry, his wide eyes flying to me. As one we both began to run out of the room and out of the female hostel, along with other girls on the same floor who had heard the howls.

"What's going on?" I heard someone ask another but I didn't wait to hear a response. Alix ran into Adalyn's room calling her name, but her room was empty of her.

"Where is she?" I asked him in worry.

"She was supposed to be here waiting for me to bring you over." He responded, his fingers combing through his hair. I didn't ask why, I didn't need to. I guessed Adalyn wanted to throw a small surprise party.

A whimpering sound came from the other side of the room drawing my attention. It was Lenda, Adalyn's quiet roommate.

"Go look for her. I'll take care of Lenda." I said to Alix who didn't look pleased. He looked like he just found himself in between a rock and a hard place.

My eyes widened when I realized that he was worried for me, someone he just met. Touched beyond imagination, I took a step toward him, then another, ignoring the warning in my head not to start something I was not ready for.

But the thought of someone caring for me other than my aunt filled me with a strange emotion that I couldn't decipher at the moment. He watched my approach. When I reached him, I stood on tiptoes and gave him a soft kiss on the lips.

He closed his eyes and sighed with a smile. " Promise me that you will be careful." He asked me, looking down at me. But before I could answer, two things happened at once.

The earth began to tremble as if something huge was approaching us, and the sound of an ear-splitting roar, closer and louder than the first, filled the whole school. I looked back at the Alpha, fear and worry evident on our faces. "Go find your sister, now."

He placed a kiss on my forehead. "Be safe. Meet us in the Great Hall. The principal will soon announce for all students to go there. But I think the students are already on their way there. Join them." He told me and sprinted out the door as he began to shift into his wolf.

That was a good choice because his wolf had a better chance of sniffing out Adalyn than his human form. I ran out of the door with him, forgetting Lenda for a minute to get a glance at Alix's wolf. I gasped when I beheld the enormous white wolf, the color of Alix's hair. I could feel the Alpha power that rolled from the wolf even though I was not a wolf.

The magnificent wolf leaped over two students who were frozen in shock, obviously not certain where the danger was, outside or before them in the form of the unusually huge wolf. I watched as the wolf ran down the almost deserted hallway.

A voice that I recognized as Mister Wilkin's, the school principal, blared through the school speakers.

"All students are to assemble in the Great Hall for their protection. All the teachers should follow suit. Do not worry, we are still protected by the ward made by the Elder Witches themselves."

After the speaker went quiet, I ushered a trembling Lenda out of the room towards the Great Hall. We were the only ones out now, which meant everyone else was in the Hall. Shit.

Another earthquake occurred just then, followed by another and another. The Hall was situated close to the school entrance, so as we drew close to the hall, I saw several uniformed young people sprinting towards the gate, followed by another group of uniformed people, followed by a third. The second group shifted to enormous wolf forms of diverse colors, while the third, though they weren't as many as the first or second group, was equally fearsome to look at for they had deadly-looking fangs jutting out from between their red lips. They were also very pale. Vampires.

Vampires hated sunlight because of how it affected their visions and gave them sunburn faster than normal. These vampires were moving and seeing well in the sun toward the ward. Magic was certainly at work.

I ushered Lenda into the Great Hall and closed it behind her. I couldn't control the urge to see what was going on out there. Where were these uniformed warriors from? Why was the school sending a group of teenagers to fight monsters? It seemed N. A had secrets that I had to figure out.
