You said it yourself that I’m unrefined and I need training,” he proclaimed firmly. “You will train me more properly than you’ve done.”Ophelia stood up, her expression changing. “The last time I trained you properly, as I should, you lost control. You think I should push you harder than that?”“Yes.”Ophelia noticed that there was no hesitation in his voice. His words were firm, and his eyes gleamed with determination.Ophelia laughed then rested her hand on the arm of the chair. “You are actually oblivious to what you’re asking of.”“Make it clear to me. That’s your job.”“That’s enough,” Jasmine declared, and both of them looked at her. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was enough to stop their argument. “This won’t do anything. Arguments won’t make him stronger. We have to join hands instead of fighting each other.”“Why don’t you train him, Jasmine?” Ophelia inquired, stepping forward slowly.Jasmine furrowed her brows. “He was assigned to you. You are the be
Ophelia moved first.“We are done here,” she said and then walked away.Evans did not argue. He and Jasmine followed her side by side. He brushed the remaining soil from his hands while Ophelia walked through the tall grasses calmly, her steps controlled.“This way,” she said as they walked out of the forest.Evans paused as he realized the forest had gone back to normal. He could hear birds chirping and the leaves rustling as they were all pretending as if nothing had happened.Shortly after, they arrived at the bungalow where Ophelia parked her car. It was then that Evans noticed the building was old, but it was maintained. Both Jasmine and Evans watched as she walked up to the door and removed a key from her pocket.“We will rest here for a while before we move in the evening,” she said as she slipped the key in.“But we are not done training. We have not done anything since.”Ophelia paused then turned to look at him. “We can’t be out in the open, and we are not training tonight.
Ophelia studied him carefully.“What do you feel? Whatever you feel could lead us there.”“Pain,” Evans replied immediately and kept walking. Ophelia’s expression hardened, but she followed him.Evans reached the clearing, and the sight was unforgiving. The trees formed a circular shape around the clearing, as if they were silent witnesses, their branches twisted. The air that hit Evans was harsh, and then he stared at the floor. His breath hitched. The ground was darker, and even the grasses did not grow on that spot. The more Evans looked at the darker ground, the more unsettling it became. The soil had something reddish buried in it, even though it had soaked in it all this while but refused to leave. The air suddenly stopped passing through the clearing, and Evans’s breath hitched. His heart pounded, and he felt like he could pass out any moment, but he remained decisive. Even birds kept their distance from the clearing; no chirping or rustling of living leaves.Everything was sti
As he got to the roadside, he stopped a taxi. The driver, who looked like he was in his early forties, stared at him.“Where to?”Evans hesitated, then he replied. “RavenMoor.”The driver knitted his brows. “That’s going to cost you a lot, boy.”“Name it. I want you to take me there. I will pay you.”The driver paused, then gestured to him to come in. Evans obeyed, and the car moved. He stayed quiet throughout the journey, his gaze fixed on the window. Silvercity was a small city, and it shouldn’t take them more than four hours to get to RavenMoor. He had searched for the city on his phone last night. The buildings in sight passed by in a blur as the car sped by.Anticipation rose in Evans’s chest; he knew he shouldn’t be there, but something kept pulling him. He knew he had every right to find out about the truth, and he would do anything.By the time they entered the city, Evans had dozed off. The faint nudge of the driver woke him up, and he quickly shifted his gaze to the driver.
Evans closed the door behind him as he stepped in. He had boarded a bus home, and Ophelia drove off in her car, leaving him to find a ride home. The kitchen door opened, and Jane peeped at him.“Evans? You’re here?” she asked as she came out, a small apron around her neck.“Hi, Mom.”“What’s going on?” she asked, her tone laced with concern. Then her gaze fell to his eyes, and she noticed he wasn’t wearing his glasses. “First of all, why are you not putting on your glasses, isn’t taking them off dangerous, and secondly, why are you home? You left for school not too long ago, right?”Evans reached for his glasses and put them on. “I just took it off when I got to the porch, I wanted to know if my sight was better, but I was wrong,” he lied, but she did not look convinced. “I had to come home from school because I was not feeling too well. I came home to rest.”Jane’s brows furrowed as she stepped closer. “Not feeling well? But you left this house in perfect health.. “Mom,” Evans inte
She scoffed. “Even if I were half, you wouldn’t harm a strand of hair on my head.”One of her fingers twitched slightly at her side, just once.“We can’t afford to continue training like this without you making peace with your inner self,” she added, her tone sharper. “You need control. I might not be the one standing in front of you next time; it could be your mom or the students.”Evans ran his shaky hands through his hair. “But… I think the training triggered whatever that was? Don’t you think so?”Ophelia nodded. “Yes, I think so. That’s why we are going back home to rest and continue the training tomorrow.”She did not wait for his response; instead, she turned and walked away. Meanwhile, Evans swallowed. He felt the weight of what he carried for the first time. Everything happened without him knowing, and he did not even know what had happened, but he could feel the aftermath’s effect on him.He picked up his glasses and dashed over to Ophelia. He caught up with her and walked
